Anthony Geary Quits ‘General Hospital’ After 37 Years Playing Luke Spencer

Anthony_Geary_Quits__General_Hospital_-1e037d6057aac9a17b6618be0cf854c3

Anthony Geary is checking out of “General Hospital.”

The actor, who’s played Luke Spencer on the ABC soap opera since 1978, is exiting the series, a spokeswoman for the show told TheWrap.

The timing is interesting, as “General Hospital” recently announced that Genie Francis is returning to the series to reprise the role of Laura Spencer. Francis will participate in Geary’s exit storyline.

Geary and Francis also recently reunited onstage for the Daytime Emmy Awards.

In a statement, “General Hospital” executive producer Frank Valentini divulged that the actor “felt it was the right time” to exit the series.

“Tony recently made his intentions clear that he would vacate his role of Luke Spencer this year, and it was a decision he did not come to lightly. After 37 years on the air, Tony felt this was the right time to bid adieu to Luke Spencer, Port Charles and ‘General Hospital,'” Valentini said.

Valentini added that Geary will remain with the show through the summer, and promised that there are “some exciting things” in the works for the character.

“Anthony is our friend and a part of our television family, but, as difficult as this may be, we understand and respect that this is his choice. Rest assured, Tony has promised to be with us throughout the summer as we have some exciting things in store for Luke,” Valentini said. “The door will always remain open, so don’t think this is the last you’ll see of Anthony Geary or Luke Spencer.”

Geary has won eight Daytime Emmys for his work on “General Hospital,” most recently this year in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

Genie Francis Is Returning to ABC’s ‘General Hospital’

So, who’s up for a Luke and Laura reunion?

Laura Spencer is packing her bags and heading back to Port Charles.

Actress Genie Francis is returning to “General Hospital” to reprise her Laura Spencer character, series executive producer Frank Valentini said Wednesday.

In announcing her return, Valentini noted that “the door has always been open” for Francis to come back.

“Genie is a part of our ‘GH’ family and the door has always been open for her to return when the timing and story are right,” Valentini noted. “Lucky for us, the stars have aligned and we are thrilled to welcome Genie back home.”

Valentini did not say when Francis is making her “General Hospital,” or how many episodes she’ll appear on.

Francis, who premiered on the series in 1977, most recently appeared on the ABC soap in 2013.

She also starred on the CBS soap “The Young and the Restless” from 2011 to 2012, playing Genevieve Atkinson.

Francis reunited with her “GH” costar Anthony Gear, aka Luke Spencer, to present the Best Drama award at the Daytime Emmys on Sunday.

Francis received a Daytime Emmy Award in 2007 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the role of Laura Spencer.

The biggest and dumbest mistake abc/Disney ever made.
Sboyld have let shondra times run the whole dept.
Content is king.
generations I said generations of loyal viewer ship.
and low cost (besides those soap opera ogs)
what is Empire? Power?SOA?Grey's Anatomy?
Soap operas.
Funny thing is its because of the old lion diva soap stars making so much and luke warm ratings that the soaps got canned. But ratings were more the networks fault.
soap operas dramas etc?
that right there is a wide open line with mad dollars on it.
someone need to do that on abc, online or BOTH.
the shows are well established product placement and advertising is built in soaps for any schedule loyal viewership quick turn around
mess around and give ME funding?

I remember the big controversy back in the day, when they had him takin the pussy from Laura....

and people forgot MANY other soap operas took the exact same storyline right after...I believe Patch on Days of our lives did the same

General Hospital writers reveal whether Michael Knight will resurrect Tad Martin

General Hospital will celebrate a real blast from the past on Sept. 30 when Michael Knight, the legacy soap actor who is best known for playing Tad Martin on All My Children, comes to Port Charles as a character who’s “capable of all manner of shenanigans.”

Sadly, head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor are revealing to EW that Knight won’t be resurrecting Tad the way Hilary B. Smith brought back her One Life to Live character Nora Buchanan on GH. Instead, he’ll create a new character for the ABC sudser. “There are a number of people in Port Charles who are in trouble and his character will have an impact on how their stories are solved or further complicated,” teases Van Etten.

EW has obtained a first look of Knight from the set. Is he an attorney? A mob boss? The CEO of Tinder?

Even though he isn’t bringing back his beloved AMC role, it wasn’t far back in the mind of Van Etten and O’Connor. “We have conversations when we have these actors come back about whether it’s more useful or not to resurrect their characters,” admits Van Etten. “We’ll continue to have these as the opportunity arises.”

image003.jpg

egardless of the mystery surrounding Knight’s role, the writers are thrilled about what he will bring to GH. He started filming on Sept. 10 on the show’s Los Angeles set.

“I knew he could bring a little zest to the General Hospital canvas. He’s his own special brand of zest!” says Van Etten. “I think the devotees of soap operas love seeing this callback to the rich history of ABC daytime shows.”

While the writers can’t say how long Knight’s character will stick around Port Charles, he is expected to cross paths with James Patrick Stuart, who played Will Cortlandt alongside Knight in the early ’90s on AMC. Stuart now plays Valentin Cassadine on GH.

“It’s a treat for the audience to see performers who have worked together in the past mix it up,” adds O’Connor.

Both writers said they zeroed in on Knight after knowing they had a particular role to fill on the daytime sudser. “As we were writing his character, we found out that oh, we have even more use for him!” says Van Etten. “It’s helpful to know who the actors are in this situation. We have lots of ideas on how we can expand his character and cross-pollinate his character.”

Lest you’ve been living in exile, Knight is best known for playing Tad Martin on AMC from 1982–1986, 1988–1990, and then from 1992 until the finale on ABC in 2011. He also popped up in the online version in 2013.

General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC.

ABC’s daytime drama General Hospital will begin airing repeat episodes on Fridays beginning this week, April 3 through May 22, amid the continuing coronavirus-related production halt.
New original episodes will continue to air Monday through Thursday as originally planned, the network said today. Each “Flashback Friday” episode will feature an introduction from a General Hospital actor highlighting the episode. This Friday’s introduction will be made by Laura Wright.
The network has a limited number of new episodes in the can and is beginning to stagger them to assure that they will have four originals per week through May 22. If production does not resume by then, which will likely be the case, the daytime soap will have to switch to all reruns.

The first “Flashback Friday” episode airing on Friday April 3, was the show’s Special 56th Anniversary Show episode which aired on Tuesday April 3, 2019. Per the network’s description the episode, which airs two days after the show’s 57th anniversary, is “a loving tribute to the hospital’s past, present and future, providing a pivotal moment for some of Port Charles’ most memorable characters.”
General Hospital is both the longest-running American soap opera currently in production and the longest-running scripted television drama currently in production. The show has won the Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Drama a record 13 times.
Other daytime dramas, NBC’s Days Of Our Lives, CBS’ The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, also are under production shutdowns. Days should be able to go through a lengthy production shutdown without its run on NBC getting interrupted — the network currently has episodes in the can to air through October. The Young and the Restless and Bold had about 4-6 weeks worth of episodes in the can as of March 17, the date both series shut down production.

General Hospital is bringing back Chad Brannon

By Lynette Rice

Another big homecoming is in the works for Port Charles.

EW can report exclusively that Chad Brannon, who played the troubled Alexander "Zander" Smith from 2000-04 is returning to General Hospital in March. He begins filming on Feb. 12.

If fans will recall, Zander is the biological father of Cameron Webber (William Lipton), whose stepfather Franco Baldwin was originated by James Franco and now played by Roger Howarth. Cameron, who was conceived after Zander and Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) had a second one-night stand (or should we say twice-night stand?), is currently struggling from the effects of an inoperable brain tumor.

It's unclear how GH will work Brannon back into the action, since his character was literally shot dead in 2004. He did return to the soap in December of 2009, but in a cameo as a character known as Aaron.

Brannon won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series in 2004 for playing Zander.

General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC.

General Hospital to pay tribute to the late John Reilly

The veteran soap actor was best known for playing Sean Donely on the ABC daytime drama.

General Hospital will pay tribute to the late John Reilly, who died earlier this year at the age of 84.
The daytime drama vet is best known for playing Sean Donely on the ABC sudser from 1984 to 2013. Here's the logline for the May 21 tribute: "While mourning the death of W.S.B (World Security Bureau) agent Sean Donely, fan-favorites Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner), Malcolm "Mac" Scorpio (John J. York), Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), Laura Collins (Genie Francis) and Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom) are pulled into a mystery involving Sean's daughter, Annie (Caitlin Reilly)."
"John Reilly was an incredible actor and a large part of the 58-plus-year legacy that is GH," said executive producer Frank Valentini in a statement. "This episode is meant to honor him and his contribution to the show's rich history. With so many fan favorites returning, new and longtime viewers will enjoy it. We had a lot of fun filming and I am grateful that we were also able to include his daughter. Viewers will hopefully also enjoy one more surprise return — it is just too amazing to spoil."

Reilly died of unknown causes.
Before arriving in Port Charles, Reilly costarred on As the World Turns and Passions, and made guest appearances in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Wonder Woman, The Love Boat, Dallas, Cagney & Lacey, and Beverly Hills, 90210, in which he played Kelly Taylor's dad Bill.
General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC.

General Hospital airs touching tribute to former soap star Jay Pickett after his death

A celebration of the actor's life is scheduled for Friday and will be live-streamed.

General Hospital paid a touching tribute to one of their own, honoring the late Jay Pickett, who died suddenly on July 30 from an apparent heart attack.
The long-running daytime drama added a photo of Pickett at the end of Tuesday's episode, accompanied by the words, "In Loving Memory of Jay Pickett." The 60-year-old actor starred as Det. David Harper on the series from 2006 to 2008.
CREDIT: ABC
A celebration of Pickett's life is scheduled for Friday at Nampa Civic Center in Nampa, Idaho. The memorial will be live-streamed starting at 4:45 pm ET through the Nampa Funeral Home website.

Pickett had a long tenure in the soap opera world, beginning his career as Dr. Chip Larken on Days of Our Lives and going on to portray Det. David Harper on General Hospital. He became well-known for playing Frank Scanlon on the General Hospital spin-off Port Charles, where he appeared in over 700 episodes. His television work also included guest appearances on shows like Dragnet, Mr. Belvedere, Matlock, Dexter, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Queen Sugar.
At the time of his death, Pickett had been filming the Western drama Treasure Valley, which he had written the screenplay for and produced alongside his friend Jim Heffel and Tucson Vernon Walker.
"Jay died sitting on a horse ready to rope a steer in the movie Treasure Valley in Idaho. The way of a true cowboy," Heffel wrote in a tribute on Facebook (which has since been removed) following news of Pickett's death. "He will be truly missed. Ride like the wind partner [sic]."

Born in Spokane, Wash. in 1961, Pickett grew up in Caldwell, Idaho, receiving his bachelor's degree in acting from Boise State University and his MFA in acting from UCLA where he also focused on theater. He's survived by his wife and their three children.

‘General Hospital’ Pledges Support For Trans Community After Ingo Rademacher Exit

ABC’s General Hospital made its first post-Ingo Rademacher statement regarding one of the controversies that has surrounded his departure from the soap.

A short statement tweeted this morning from the soap’s official Twitter account states, “General Hospital stands in solidarity with the trans community.” The tweet then links to the GLAAD organization for resources and additional information on trans issues.

Last weekend, Rademacher, a longtime member of the soap’s cast, posted a retweeted image on his Instagram page that referred to Rachel Levine, the U.S. assistant secretary for health and first transgender four-star officer, as a “dude.” The Instagram post was condemned by GH castmates Nancy Lee Grahn and transgender actor Cassandra James, and Rademacher on Monday apologized for not crossing out the word “dude” while maintaining he still did not “think it was ok” to “call a transgender an empowered woman.”

Rademacher’s exit from the show was confirmed later that day, though his departure was in the works prior to last weekend’s Instagram post.

The actor, sources say, was fired for failing to comply with the production’s Covid vaccine mandate.

Another longtime cast member departure is widely rumored (though not confirmed) to be imminent for similar reasons.

Today’s tweet from GH was greeted by followers with a range of opinions, though most are along the lines of, in the words of one commenter, “Took you long enough. Appreciate it though.” And many of the responses call for the soap to give James’ character, Dr. Terry Randolph, more screen time. Said one commenter about GH‘s “stands in solidarity” statement, “Prove it by writing a story for Terry.”
