Official 2021 Pittsburgh Steelers thread: Steelers vs Cowboys in "Hall of Fame" game review- Is this beginning of the end for Mason Rudolph ?

The reports out of training camps are that not only has Dwayne Haskins completely
outplayed Mason Rudolph in training camp, but so, apparently, has Josh Dobbs. There
is open talk among observers, about whether Mason Rudolph can bring value in a trade.
There is talk that he is worth no more than 5th or 6th round draft pick. The telling will'
be tomorrow when Mike Tomlin starts him against the Cowboys. He will be compared
with Dwayne Haskins who start the 2nd quarter. Josh Dobbs will them finish the 2nd
half by himself.

I suspect that Tomlin wants to establish a premise where the team gets rid of Mason
Rudolph. He is giving him a high profile opportunity to trip over his own ineptitude, so
that when he is cut, none of the cacs will complain. The reality is that Mason is one of
the many quarterbacks who look better on paper, and whose college resume, says
more of them than is actually better. The guy was inferior to the obscure and undersized
Duck Hodges. That is all we need to know.

The talents of Dwayne Haskins are well-known. The man was a bona-fide first rounder
and the Steelers may yet get the franchise QB to succeed Ben, if the Ohio State man
manages to become the good players he did not become in Washington...

Mason has questions to answer.

Steelers grades (by me):

Mason Rudolph
: B. The man very evidently came in to defend his job, and he
played well most of the first half. Also, the offensive line did well and kept him
from being hustled or harassed. He also benefited from the activity of Najee
Harris, whom I thought Mike Tomlin kept in the game far too long.

Dwyane Haskins: B-. The key thing is that Dwayne did not mess things up. It
should be said to his credit that he played with scrubs. However, his scrubs were
pitted against the scrubs of the other team, and although he played well, it was
disheartening to see that all his throws were underneath. He threw the ball past
the line of scrimmage one time, and it went over the heard of the receiver, who
made no effort to dive for it. Credit him for what it is worth, but he led the team
to a touch down, though much praise goes to the punt returner who gave the
team excellent starting position deep in Cowboys territory:

Josh Dobbs: B+ The only reason why this grade is not an A is that Josh played
against the 3rd scrubs, otherwise he was the most dynamic of the quarterbacks.
If he does this again, Mason Rudolph might be traded or Dwayne Haskins might
find himself on the practise squad.

Offensive line: A The various permutations of the offensive line did not give up
a sack or a hit. This is a good thing to see because it showed resolve and commitment
no matter who was in there. Furthermore, the offensive line allowed the team to run
the ball well and effectively. Ballage was the most effective runner, and scored his
touchdown running the ball in.

Defensive Line: A The various permutations of the defensive lines came to play, and
snuffed out the Cowboys running attack. It is noteworthy that the Cowboys offensive
line was at full strength, and yet the Steelers managed a couple of tackles, pressured
the quarterback into an errant throw that was intercepted. Isaiah Buggs, the nose
tackle, did have a knuckleheaded penalty when he buried his helmet in the chest of
a Cowboys quarterback, that revived an ended drive.

Linebackers: A The unit stood out all night allowing no runs past the line and
harassing the Cowboys quarterbacks.. Alex Highsmith showed that he might be a
pleasant surprise this year, when he sacked Cowboys quarterback Gilbert. Robert
Spillane had a decent game in pass protection, but perhaps Quincy Roche should
play more in pass coverage.

Defensive Backs: C The only reason why this grade is not worse is that the Steelers
had a better showing towards the end of the game. Otherwise the Cowboys threw
at will on this unit.

The Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 season has kicked off! It has been more than 200 days since our beloved Steelers last took the field, and the Hall of Fame Game gave us a look at part of the Steelers’ roster for the upcoming season. With no preseason games last season, there are plenty of Steelers’ fans excited about seeing new players and specific camp battles.

Now that the 2021 season is getting underway, here are some of the numbers involved in the Steelers win over the Cowboys.

4
The Pittsburgh Steelers defense continued to bring the pressure to start off the 2021 preseason on the right foot. The Steelers notched four sacks in the game which were registered by four different players. Alex Highsmith, Cassius Marsh, Quincy Roche, and Abdullah Anderson each got in on the action. As for Marsh’s sack, it came by forcing a fumble even though the Cowboys recovered.

0
The Steelers managed to have zero pre-snap penalties on either side of the ball. Early in the preseason, it’s often common for teams to have either an illegal formation, false start, or defensive offsides at some point. But the Steelers only had three penalties on the day with a roughing the passer, pass interference, and an illegal block. The penalty by tight end Marcus Baugh was the only offensive penalty in the game for the Steelers, but it did manage to stall the drive where the Steelers had to settle for a field goal.

+2
Although the Steelers did have an ugly turnover, having three takeaways to give them a turnover margin of +2 was welcomed start to the season. With an interception and two fumble recoveries, one of which came on special teams, the Steelers turnovers weren’t simply about their opponents miscues but they made the play on the majority of their takeaways. Unfortunately, the Steelers turnover was based on their own miscue and not the Cowboys forcing the takeaway other than pouncing on the ball.

1/2
Kicker Sam Sloman had a very rough night for the Steelers. Not only was he one for two in field goals, he was also one for two in extra points. After missing a 49-yard field goal in the first half, Sloman bounced back to hit a 48 yarder after he had missed the extra point on the previous drive.

3
With Pressley Harvin III getting all the action at punter on Thursday night, he did a lot to impress. Downing the ball inside the 20 on three of his four punts, the masterpiece was his second punt of the night which landed at the 1 yard line and was downed there without bounding into the end zone. The only punt of the night which did not go inside the 20 was a shorter punt with a fantastic bounce for the Steelers in which it hit off the returner for a Pittsburgh recovery. Had to returner not been there and let the ball go, it likely would have bounced inside the 20 as well as the Steelers took over at the Cowboys 26 yard line.

1
Ignoring the single kneel down which ended the first half, the Pittsburgh Steelers managed a first down on all but one of their drives. The Steelers only had one three and out the entire night, and it just so happened to be on the punt where they recovered the ball.

45
The longest offensive play by either team on the night was the 45-yard catch by Chase Claypool for Mason Rudolph. Although he was down on the field after the play, Claypool appeared to be alright as he cheered on his teammates in the second half. Unfortunately, it was really the only play the night where the Steelers offense looked to push the ball down the field significantly.

16
While this number is expected to be high in a preseason game, the Steelers targeted 16 different players in the passing game on Thursday night. Of the 16 players, 11 managed at least one reception. The most targets of any player was to Chase Claypool with four. Add in the fact that Steelers only had 28 pass attempts, it was impressive that they were able to involve so many receivers.

36
Although it seems special teams have been covered at length, it is one of the main areas to look at during the preseason as players use this in order to find their way onto the 53-man roster. The Steelers did not have any kickoff returns and only had one punt return on the night. But on that one return, wide receiver Matthew Sexton gained 36 yards to the Dallas 33 yard line and set the Steelers up for their first score of the game.

3
Despite the fact it was a preseason game, any time a defense can hold an NFL team to only three points is impressive. By doing so, in meant the Steelers kept the Cowboys out of the end zone all night. On Dallas’ lone scoring drive, Alex Highsmith’s sack helped kill the drive and make the Cowboys settle for three points. On the other deepest drive of the game, which happened to be the Cowboys’ next possession, the Steelers managed to get a blocked field goal from Tre Norwood. The next deepest drive by the Cowboys was to the Steelers 34-yard line where they attempted a 52-yard field goal just before halftime which was missed wide right.

So there are some numbers to help evaluate the Steelers’ opening preseason game of the 2021 season. It wasn’t pretty, but the Steelers managed to still win the game and get a good look at a lot of their young players.

So what numbers from Thursday night’s game stand out to you? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The Pittsburgh Steelers find stars on both sides of the ball while getting their first look at their quarterbacks.

Football is back. The Pittsburgh Steelers walked out of Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium 1-0 with plenty to look back on.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said heading into the game that he wanted to look at everyone. Thursday night was about finding out what players can do in live game situations. Some with new roles, some looking for their first role.

When you look at the notepad following the game, nine notes stood out. Names kept coming up that either impressed or didn't impress. Either way, they were worth sharing.

All eyes with on the backup quarterback competition, but there was plenty to observe, and take away from, by the end of the Hall of Fame Game

Pressley Harvin Won the Job
The punter position battle is the most entertaining part of Steelers training camp. Not really, but kind of at the same time.

Heading into Thursday night, one would say Jordan Berry and Harvin were neck-and-neck. Anyone can look good in shorts and helmets, though.

Once the game clock started, Harvin came to play. He landed a punt perfectly on the one yard-line that silenced any haters. It was his second punt of the game - the first one landing inside the 10.

Then, he came into the second half and landed one inside the 15.

Even a normal punt turned into a fumble.

It's no longer a competition. Give Harvin the job.

Tre Norwood Has Potential
Norwood started at free safety for Minkah Fitzpatrick and he played well for a sixth-round rookie. He nearly came up with an interception and was credited with a field goal block.

Not a bad NFL debut.

There is some worry regarding his tackling. He didn't appear to be the strongest guy on the field, and did miss a tackle or two. That's something that might come with comfortability. Once he's less in his head on the field the more natural tackling might come.

It wasn't a bad first game, though. Definitely a player to keep watch of.

Alex Highsmith is That Dude
The Smitty Spin is a trademark in Pittsburgh. Bud Dupree? Yep, he's been replaced.

The Steelers knew what they were doing when they drafted Highsmith. They put a player who's a great learner in a room with T.J. Watt and Dupree. You're telling me he's not destined for greatness?

In the Hall of Fame Game, Highsmith was the only starting edge rusher on the field. So, we didn't get to see Melvin Ingram just yet. But judging from Highsmith's performance, he's the starter - deservingly so.

This three-headed monster looks scary good. And only one of them played.

Side note: Cassius Marsh doesn't look bad. He had a few pressures in the first half and worked well opposite of Highsmith. When pads came on, Marsh came to play.

Team Looks Lost With Rudolph
Mason Rudolph looked a little nervous in the pocket, which is becoming a trend for the fourth-year quarterback.

This was an opportunity for he or Dwayne Haskins to take a lead in the backup quarterback competition but neither did. Rudolph had no chemistry with his receivers, and outside of a deep pass to Chase Claypool - that Claypool dove to catch - there was no spark from the pass game.

Time is running out on Rudolph proving he's a starting NFL quarterback. This team just doesn't seem to click with him on the field.

Stat Line: 6/9, 84 yards, 0 touchdowns

Thoughts on Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins in Pittsburgh Steelers Preseason Opener

Pierre was a step behind on a few passes thrown his way, but there were moments he shined.

At this point, Pierre is a player who's going to play a decent-sized role on this defense. He'll be the first cornerback on the field behind Cameron Sutton and Joe Haden, and could start a few games if Sutton moves to the inside.

It wasn't a bad start for someone moving from undrafted rookie to serious playing time. There's more to come, and his development should grow with each game.

Side note: Justin Layne had a nice strip in the second quarter but it came after a 20-plus yard catch. It was an impressive recovery but not something the Steelers could, or should, rely on.

Donovan Stiner Continues to Impress
Stiner came into the game after a standout week at training camp. He ended the team's final practice on Tuesday with an interception on a Josh Dobbs throw. Then, he came into the game and grabbed one from Ben DuNucci.

Stiner is fighting hard for a roster spot behind Miles Killebrew and Tre Norwood. It's going to be a challenge but it's not impossible.

If he's going to make the roster this season, it's going to come from his special teams play. Making plays on defense is certainly going to boost his odds, though.

This is a bottom of the barrel roster player, but one that has done enough to put a pin on his name. Keep watching No. 26.

Kalen Ballage Over Someone
Look, it doesn't really matter who Ballage beats out to make this roster (outside of Najee Harris and Anthony McFarland), but he needs to be part of the 53-man.

Ballage has more power and vision than Jaylen Samuels. Benny Snell Jr. still has potential to develop well if utilized properly, but Samuels may have peaked - and it's not a high climb.

He entered this game making pretty much every "sleeper to make the roster" story out there. He only improved that stock in this game.

Stat Line: 5 rushes, 19 yards, 1 touchdown

Give this man a shot!

Dwayne Haskins Was Ok But Showed Potential
Haskins didn't have a standout game but he carried himself well. Most of what Tomlin and the coaches were looking for was his ability to protect the ball. He did that well.

Haskins had a few plays where you watched him go through all of his progressions. There were also times he got out of the pocket, or took off, when needed.

"I liked his demeanor," Tomlin said. "He was a really good communicator. He was present and cerebral the way you like the quarterback position to be. But there is so much ball ahead of him and the others."

All around, the third-year quarterback showed why he was taken in the first round. It doesn't mean he's surpassed Rudolph, but if you were thinking about the future, Haskins showed a lot more promise.

Unfortunately, Tomlin said on Tuesday that next season plays no role in his backup quarterback battle. We'll see how true that is when Haskins starts next game.

Stat Line: 8/13, 54 yards, 0 touchdowns

Josh Dobbs is Puts Himself in the Mix
Dobbs lined up on third and goal and found Tyler Simmons on a quick out route that I don't think Rudolph makes. Haskins isn't losing his spot on this team, but Rudolph might - as crazy as that sounds.

Dobbs needs to do a ton to beat out Rudolph for the final quarterback spot. It's not impossible by no means, and if we're judging off comfortability, he is by-far the most relaxed of the three.

On top of his on-field play, Ben Roethlisberger loves Dobbs' intelligence. The Steelers could utilize him as a third option and keep him on the sideline to keep calling plays like he did last season.

"This guy's not going to back down from the competition," Tomlin said. "You guys keep asking me about Rudolph and Haskins, he's not going anywhere. We're in a training camp set a number of years ago and it was [Landry] Jones and Rudolph and Dobbs, and nobody was asking me about Dobbs - and he came out of it."

Who won the first look at the quarterback competition?

"Keep watching," says Tomlin.

:confused::confused:....WTF do you know about American football other than what you obviously copy & paste???

Fools on the ignore button do not know how it works. Once your ass is ignored,
your statements are also ignored even if quoted by someone else. I did not see
the post by "Tootrilla" because his ass ignored. Lightbright then quoted him, and
I can that he quoted him, but Lightbright's ass is on ignore as well, I cannot see what
he quoted, and that is exactly I like it.

Fuck both you, get the fuck out of my thread

What's going on in here?
They are trying to get my attention, in the worst way possible. I am keeping'
them ignored,
and they are going crazy!!
Dumb fuck supposedly has people on ignore..... yet knows we're here

I don't have trilla on ignore and there's no post by him here.... you see a too trilla post dtown?

I was gonna say he got a super Ignore button if people can't see posts of other members in his shit because he got them on ignore.

Man y'all done changed the game so they can't post in your threads if you got them on ignore?
They can post. I just do not see their nonsense. If someone decides to quote them,
I do not see that either. It is like they disappear from the face of the earth. It is far
better than fumigation

I do not see what the fuck they post. They can post as much as they want.
Their friends cannot save them, because if they try to quote them, I do not
see what they quote. They are completely gone out of my life.

Again, this is nothing more than me, a Steelers fan, indulging and bingeing on my

Nope. This feature is just fantastic. I do not see what they write;
I do not see it when it is quoted, even by an unignored person.

James Washington approaches Pittsburgh Steelers about requesting trade, source says

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver James Washington has approached the team about requesting a trade, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday.
The source said that Washington, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal, is unhappy with his limited playing time last season and so far this preseason.

Washington, 25, saw his production dwindle last season. He played just 486 snaps (44%) in 2020 after seeing action on 634 snaps (64%) in 2019. His on-field production took a corresponding hit, with him recording just 392 yards and five TDs last season as compared with 735 yards and three scores in 2019.
He was targeted twice in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Last season, Ben Roethlisberger even campaigned to get Washington on the field more often as his snap counts decreased in the second half of the season.
"James Washington is a guy that is getting on the field and needs to get on the field more," Roethlisberger said in December. "But it's not because anybody's not doing good. It's just because he's a player that can make plays. We always talk about guys staying fresh. We need to rotate guys, get him on the field, because he's hungry, wants to be out there and make plays for us."
The Oklahoma State alum was selected in the second round of the 2018 draft and is a part of a loaded receivers room that also includes JuJu Smith-Schuster, Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson.
He has primarily been an underrated deep-threat option in the Steelers' offense and figured to have a bigger role in coordinator Matt Canada's offense with Canada's constant rotation of receivers.

Package him together with his fellow Oklahoma State University
stiff, Masson Rudolph, and trade them for an offensive line man.
He has done nothing in the time he has been with Pittsburgh. I
believe he dropped a pass in the game yesterday, so let him go...

I do not think a trade is what he wants. This is his contract year
and he is trying to exercise leverage. He is trying to get more
balls thrown at him, so that come free agency, he will have some
marketability. The problem is that he is way down the the list, as
far as wide receivers of the Steelers are concerned.
