Obamas to begin sixth holiday of the year

President Barack Obama will be accompanied by his wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, nine, and are expected to stay at the historic Blue Heron Farm in Chilmark.

Bill Burton, the deputy White House press secretary, said that the US president was “going to spend a little time recharging his batteries” at the Massachusetts island ahead of the November midterm elections.

“There will be some hiking, some time at the beach, some time at the ice cream store - all the sort of things you do when you’re at Martha’s Vineyard. You enjoy the people and the good food.”

He is also expected to work on his swing at Mink Meadows golf club in Vineyard Haven and to work out every day, as he did when the First Family visited Martha’s Vineyard last year.

The tally of vacation days for an American president has become a contentious issue in recent years. President Bill Clinton conducted a poll about where best to holiday. President George W. Bush spent a total of 879 days on holiday in his eight years in office, according to Mark Knoller of CBS, the unofficial statistician of the presidency.

Mr Bush was usually working at his Prairie Chapel ranch in Texas, which was named the “Western White House” during his long summers there when he was accompanied by dozens of staff.

Mr Obama’s holidays have been particularly scrutinised in the last year, as he has come under fire for his handling of the US economy as well as the Louisiana oil spill. A poll released this week found that only four in 10 approve of his handling of the economy.

He was questioned last year for choosing to stay on the elitist Martha’s Vineyard during a severe recession, while in July he was criticised for taking his family to Maine rather than visit the Gulf of Mexico coast line. He subsequently took his family to Florida last weekend.

Although he appears to take more holidays than his predecessors, they have usually been very short. His five this year will total just 20 days - he did not accompany his wife and youngest daughter to Marbella, Spain. As well as Florida, Maine, and an 11-day stay in Hawaii over Christmas and New Year, he and his wife spent two days in Asheville, North Carolina in April.

His holidays also tend to be interrupted by major events. During the President’s first holiday of the year in his native Hawaii he spent much of his time grappling with the fallout from the failed terrorist attack by the Christmas Day “underpants bomber”. His last break in Martha’s Vineyard was interrupted by the death of Senator Edward Kennedy.

still no where near the amount of time Bush 2 took off.

2nd thing is as the president you never have a day off. you still have to get you daily briefings on the happenings of the country. So the wife and kids may be relaxing and "vacationing" but you are lucky if you can slip 9 holes in during the day.

Man every time he goes on vacation some type of national crisis occurs. Either people die, something blows up, or Nature decides to attack the US. :smh:

Hopefully, he can get a little R&R this time. I dont even want to imagine the kind of stress he's under.

Bush took 879 days in 8 years, which works out to 110 days per year in office, or 3 months and 10 days of paid vacation every single year he was in office. That record is only matched by that of the Republican congresses which were also always on vacation during his reign....

Obama's 20 days this year are nothing, they are less 20% of what Bush took in typical year... Bush worked on the 20days Obama is taking of, he would still be gone on vacation for 3whole months of the year ...Wow!!!!!

The fool that posted this must have never had a job of importance. Anyone that has knows that when you go on vacation, you still have contact with the office. You never can turn your phone off. And that's just with regular cats, think about the responsibility of the President. He probably still working most of the time. So let's end this dumbass thread.

Republicans are fucking gangsters

The man has been Pres. now for how long? If he needs some vaca. I for one understand. The job is stressful as a sonofabitch. Good for him, but gives a fuck? But you cats have got to stop playing the Bush did XYZ card. Good grief. Obama is Pres. now what Bush did or didn't do is history. Let that shit be.

If you ask me you need as many vacations as you can get with this job, shit Bush had vacations but he just took them 30 days at a time instead of a week here or a week there.

House Arrest

You’d think Americans would want their president to have some quality time with the family, recharging the ol’ batteries in some beautiful place. Instead, the Republican National Committee is tracing Obama’s every moment away from the Oval Office, as if he’s escaping house arrest.......

.......Republicans who harp on where, when and how Obama takes his downtime are guilty of a remarkable case of reverse elitism. Deep down, even Republican bomb-throwers know the president is perpetually on high alert, surrounded by staff and pulled aside for briefings, no matter where he is........

Reagan so disarmed the press, .........that he got away with spending 355 days at his ranch.

And few could lob credible complaints of elitism or luxury at President George W. Bush and his own Western White House, the ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he spent all or part of 490 days of his presidency.......
