Third employee at State disciplined over accessing candidate’s records</font size></center>

March 20, 2008

Two contract employees of the State Department were fired and a third person was disciplined for accessing passport records of Sen. Barack Obama "without a need to do so," State Department officials confirmed to NBC News.

The three people who had access to Obama's passport records were contract employees of the department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, NBC News has learned. The unauthorized activity concerning Obama's passport information occurred in January.

"A monitoring system was tripped when an employee accessed the records of a high-profile individual,” a department official told NBC News. "When the monitoring system is tripped, we immediately seek an explanation for the records access. If the explanation is not satisfactory, the supervisor is notified."

Explaining why the contractors had access to the files, the official said: "The State Department uses cleared contractors to design, build and maintain our systems and cleared contract employees provide support to government employees and several steps of passport processing including data entry, file searches, customer service and quality control.

"Each time an employee logs on, he or she acknowledges the records are protected by the privacy act and that they are only available on a need-to-know basis," the official added.

I know there's under handed things in politricks, not new to it. His people are already using this incident to his advantage, I think it was said that he will address the issue tomorrow.

Hmmm...

I think the news-worthy issue here is only a matter of the "WHO" and the "WHEN".

Because I can bet you that because of how this occurred and WHO it was that ACTUALLY did it? (Or is being blamed for it, hell...) This type of violation could likely happen all the time. People with access to privileged information are inclined to peak when given the opportunity. I wonder who else's information they peeped besides Obama? If I was working on a data base or whatever and had access to peeking at a famous and prestigious person's passport information I would probably take the risk and peek too...

Don't get me wrong, it is an illegal violation of privacy no matter what. I just think it is a case of curiosity over "forbidden fruit" as opposed to an actual conspiracy of some sort, especially something along the lines of a Watergate.

I will be waiting for the release of more information here before I conclude how I feel about it or pass a judgment on the scenario...

Always a good stance.

I mean the investigations are just now getting underway. Okay, the premature firings have added difficulties...

-Check that...

Clinton and McCaine's files accessed too...

--Check that...

It is MENTIONED that Obama's records were accessed THREE times, Clinton's once, McCain's seemed unspecified, or I somehow glanced over and missed it...

--Check that (The Obama Breach seems to be the issue, and seems to be where the focus of the outrage here is...)

The only actual potential damages disclosed so far are travel records, social security numbers, and so on. And I think the political use of such information is rather weak. Like what was the point, or was there even one?

There is a lot to consider before taking up a firm position on this sort of thing.

Or at least that's what I happen to believe...

LOL. LIke I said, patience, is always a good stance. Did you somehow read something different into what I said ??

No, I was actually concurring with what you said, just adding a tad bit of detail behind it...

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I guess, LOL...
