‘Barry this rope is for you’: Mayor pressured to resign after racist Facebook posts are exposed
Nathan WellmanSeptember 29, 2016
A Pennsylvannia city council is calling for their mayor to step down for constantly posting racist remarks on his public social media page.

Charles Wasko, mayor of West York, repeatedly compared President Obama and his family to monkeys and also joked about lynching him in various posts to his Facebook page, according to the York Dispatch.

While the offensive posts remain online as of this writing, here are screenshots of just a few examples of the mayor’s offensive posts in the event they get taken down. Currently active links to these posts can be found here, here, and here.

When the racist Facebook posts started to garner media scrutiny, City Council president Shawn Mauck was appalled.“I almost don’t know what to say,” Mauck told local reporters. “I almost want to throw up.”

Mauck has called on Wasko to resign, along with at least four of the council’s seven members.

The mayor has blown off requests for comment, and has continued to share several anti-liberal and pro-Trump posts.

West York’s population holds 5,000 people, a quarter of which are minorities.

“With those types of thoughts in your mind, how can you oversee the police department?” said City Councilman Brian Wilson. “We can’t have anybody being racist or bigoted — especially an elected official.”

Local attorney and head of the local NAACP chapter Sandra Thompson has since called on city officials to take action.

“We call upon them, other council members and the West York community to take a stand against the mayor’s actions that are based on racial bias and stereotypes and that exceed any protections of political speech,” Thompson wrote. “Now that York NAACP has been made aware, we will be seeking to take action, because his obvious bias against black people has an effect on all his constituents, which he seems to forget includes black people.”

I couldn't be President. After watching that governor talk slick on Designated Survivor, then seeing this. I would push the button on motherfuckers left and right. Bullet to the brain as I sit in the East Wing eating dinner with the first family.

What's funny/not funny is my wife and I just bought a house in this town. We moved from Baltimore. It's a republican town way different than what we're used to but I have a few black neighbors. We've been here for a year and haven't had any issues and our white neighbors seem cool and nice also from Baltimore.

You may want to read the article again... words like "Pennsylvania", and "West York" were prominent in there.

Hope you didn't pass the story to anyone else. :hmm:

Mayor accused of racist post about Obamas allowed to resign

YORK, Pa. — West York Council unanimously accepted embattled Mayor Charles Wasko's offer to resign to a round of applause from a crowd in council chambers on Monday night.

Wasko came under fire for some of his Facebook posts, which were described as offensive and racist.

One post depicts a wheelbarrow full of orangutans and says moving day at the White House "has finally arrived."

Another references football player Colin Kaepernick, who has taken a knee during the national anthem in protest of how people of color are treated. The post on Wasko's page shows flag-draped coffins and asks the quarterback to point out which guys are black so the flag can be removed.

West York mayor's racist Facebook posts prompt community forum, protest

After he was publicly criticized, Wasko wrote on his Facebook page that he will not be "politically correct, I will say what is on my mind and what I believe in ..." Wasko also told WHTM-TV that, "The racist stuff, yeah, I'll admit I did that, and I don't care what people label me as."

Council members and some residents called for the mayor's resignation. The council voted earlier this month to censure the mayor.

Council member Brian Wilson called the posts "unacceptable."

He said he tried to talk to the mayor about removing them, and the mayor responded by blocking Wilson from seeing the page.

In a subsequent motion Monday, the council voted 6-0 to appoint council president Shawn Mauck to become mayor when Wasko's resignation becomes effective Oct. 21. Mauck, who could not vote on the motion, will fill out the remainder of the term. The seat comes up for re-election next year.

"The good news is we get to move on, and we're going to deal with the topic at hand and continue to heal our community and build a better West York," Mauck said after the vote.

Mauck said he wants to build a police department that focuses on neighborhood and community policing. Mauck said he plans to ask council to adopt President Obama's 21st century model for policing as well as putting together a training program for officers.
