In response to harsh criticisms about his economic policies, US President Barack Obama has asked Americans to be patient about the country's slow economic recovery.

In his weekly statement, Obama reminded Americans that just as the recession did not happen "overnight," the economic recovery would "take time" as well, the Associated Press reported.

This comes as recent polls suggest a major drop in the approval rating of Obama's handling of the US economy ahead of the 2012 presidential election, in which he seeks a second term in office.

According to a recent joint Washington Post and ABC News poll, 59 percent of Americans disapprove of the incumbent US president's handling of the economy.

Job growth had a sharp decline in May, as the unemployment rate jumped to 9.1 percent. Reports also indicate that manufacturers cut 5,000 jobs last month.

Since World War II, no US president has been re-elected for a second term while the country's unemployment rate was over 7.2 percent.

Analysts say the slow recovery of the US economy will most likely affect Obama's bid for re-election in 2012.

I understand his point-of-view. Its not going to happen overnight. Its going to take a long time for this economy to succeed as it once did after the great depression.
