GREENSBORO -- North Carolina A&T University is considering dropping a controversial rapper from a homecoming concert lineup after complaints about the rapper's reported ties to gangs.
WXII was first to report last week that student body leaders apologized for booking rappers Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman.
The apology came after questions were raised about having gang-related performers at the school in light of the slayings of two students within the past year and a half.
Student body president, Syene Jasmin and his chief of staff, Gary Brown, said they should have done a better job screening the performers scheduled for the concert at the Greensboro Coliseum on Halloween night.
Now Jasmin said the school is analyzing the contract to determine if the Gucci Mane act can be canceled, and at what financial loss.
Gucci Mane, whose real name is Radric Davis, was arrested on murder charges in Atlanta and later released when authorities said they didn't have enough evidence to prosecute. He has served jail time on other offenses.
Jasmin and Brown said last week that following the recent murders of Derek Hodge and Dennis Hayle, and concerns about gang activity on campus and in Greensboro, they want their school to send the right message.
Jasmin declined further comment on Wednesday, saying school officials told them to refer all media inquiries to the school.
Other acts at the concert, which is open to the public, include Nicki Minaj, Keri Hilson, Trey Songz, Fabolous, Mario, GS Boyz and FLY.
