Non Profit Organizations and 501c3 Forms

I'm hoping that someone can help me with this. I'm part of a non profit organization, and there has been trouble with the 501c3 application. We've been trying for the past five years to obtain this status, but no luck. Technically, since the organization has been around since 1957, the 501c3 isn't needed. But, most donors want to donate to an organization with that status.

My question is this: is there anyway to speed up the process? I know that some companies offer to help a corporation to obtain that status, how reliable are they? I wouldn't mind coming out my pocket to get it, but I don't want to be scammed.

Also, is there a way for a non profit to exist without the 501c3?

Anyone out there have experience starting / running a non profit that can point me to a decent resource. I don't mind doing the reading, I just need a good place to start.

Any help would be appreciated.
