Nah, this is legit.

The wireless vendors come together to develop the standards and they all have varing patents and agree to cross-share.

Apple came from outside of the industry and it is inevitable that they would have to infringe on some patents.

e.g.

Qualcomm also holds a lot of patents on 4G technology.

Also how may people know that qualcomm gets a slice of revenue for every CDMA (Sprint, Verizon, Cricket, MetroPCS) handset manufactured?

Telecom is an extremely closed society but it is about to bust open in a big way..........

Nokia sues Apple over the iPhone

News reported on the BBC news website states that Nokia, the world's giant in the manufacturing of mobile phone technology, is suing Apple for infringing patents on mobile phone technology used in the iPhone. Nokia added that this patent breach applies on all iPhones since its launch in 2007.

Nokia have said that this is due to a lack of compensation from Apple, who they are accusing of "trying to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation". These alleged infringements, of which there are ten- involve wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption. Nokia have said that they hold agreements with roughly forty firms who use the technology which Nokia has worked hard to develop, including most mobile phone handset makers - allowing them to use the firm's technology. Apple however, have not signed any such agreement with Nokia and as such find themselves in this situation. During the last two decades, Nokia had invested approximately 40bn euros (£36.2bn; $60bn) on research and development. Recently, Nokia has seen its first quarterly loss in a decade amid falling sales. Analysts said that the poor results had come partly as customers turned from Nokia models to the iPhone and RIM's Blackberry. Apple's iPhone continues to remain a hugely profitable piece of technology for Apple.

In a public announcement; Ilkka Rahnasto, vice-president of legal and intellectual property at Nokia said the following:

"The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for, Apple is also expected to follow this principle."

The BBC have spoken to an industry analyst who believes that Nokia may be suing Apple in order to extract royalty payments from Apple. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimates that the Finnish company might be looking to force royalty payments of 1-2% on every iPhone sold. With more than 30 million sold, that would work out to $6 to $12 per phone sold, or as much as $400m, a very small amount in terms of Apple's complete income.

Gene Munster commented further saying: "Ultimately, the resolution is uncertain." An Apple spokesman told the BBC that the firm did not comment on pending litigation.

Earlier this month, Nokia posted its first quarterly loss in a decade amid falling sales.

Analysts said that the poor results had come partly as customers turned from Nokia models to the iPhone and RIM's Blackberry.

Meanwhile, Apple reported profits of $1.67bn (£1bn) in the three months to 26 September - partly due to a 7% growth in iPhone sales.

Apple will defend itself "vigorously" against Nokia's billion dollar iPhone patent claims

nokia-logo%20copy.jpg

he dispute between Apple and Nokia regarding patents claimed by the latter company to have been used without permission within the iPhone seems set to continue for “over a year” analysts say.

In its form 10Q filed last night, Apple responded that it will defend itself against Nokia’s patent lawsuit “vigorously”.

At issue: Nokia claims ownership of ten patented technologies applied within the iPhone, and insists Apple hasn’t paid the relevant royalties for these uses. Patents include those for wireless data transfer, speech coding, security and encryption.

Nokia filed suit against Apple in the United States last week, accusing Apple of hitching a "free ride" on Nokia's technology investment.

Bill Merritt, the head of mobile licensing firm InterDigital said he’d be surprised if anything gets sorted out quickly in this case, suggesting the patent spat could continue for years.

Analysts estimate Nokia's demands for compensation range from $200 million to $1 billion. Merritt notes the high selling price of the iPhone would also be considered in assessing how much any royalty payments should be, assuming Nokia prevails in the case.

So nokia who owns 37% of the market is jealous of Apple who owns just over 1 percent of the market?:lol::lol:

Apple fanboys make me laugh.

Apple should just do the right thing and pay up like everyone else has to. It is nothing personal just business. Nokia sat back and waited for apple to build up a nice little chunk that was worth their while and now they plan on getting it.

Sorry i'm not a apple fanboy but this shit looks strange I'm sorry. Why did they not sure earlier? But I know what you are. Begins with i and ends with r.

This.
Nokia is the biggest maker of 'smartphones' but is facing growing challenges in the market from the iPhone and BlackBerry range.

Last week, Nokia announced a third-quarter loss while this week Apple reported a 47 per cent rise in profits.

Nokia's iPhone -- no, seriously

Oh come on, what the hell is that? A Nokia branded iPhone? It was presented during Nokia's GoPlay event this morning as a glimpse into the future of Nokia interface design. Oh, and it's due out next year. When pressed during the Q&A about the striking similarity to the little Cupertino device, Anssi Vanjoki -- Nokia's Executive VP & General Manager of Multimedia -- said, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride."
