I'd agree that "desire to connect and be profound [he] said something completely fucking stupid." I wouldn't just write Simmons off as just lucky, though; his rise, as I understand it, must have required much drive and initiative. He's skillful.

I'd disagree with telling any person to leave important commentary to others. Being wrong or stupid doesn't mean someone should shut up for ever-- it means they have learning to do, false notions to be disabused of and so on. But too many people are entirely divorced from the larger society-- and especially the business of news consumption and giving a damn about what's going on around them-- to push social commentary out of sports.

its not forever. its until he gets his weight up.

and lucky doesn't mean he hasn't worked hard for his career. it means that the job and position he's in he's lucky to be there, just like wilbon cause there are other writers who work just as hard and are just as skilled and don't get those opportunities.

I was using a basketball metaphor for the basketball writer so your response puzzled me at first. "He errantly threw the ball away?"

I wouldn't tell wilbon that because wilbon wouldn't make that statement. he would have sense to realize it was a bad one. wilbon is measured. there is a difference and that's the point. you can't just say shit and hope it works when it deals with stuff of importance. the statement wasn't about basketball. it was about something larger.


backlash always makes people adjust. if there is backlash, intelligent people which i believe him to be, go back, reflect then adjust. the next time he makes a statement that's gravity is bigger than basketball and could potentially have more backlash he'll think three times before he says it. and he'll say it the correct way.
