talking about memphis grizzlies fans:

“I didn’t realize the effect [the King assassination] had on that city. [...] I think from people we talk to and stuff we’ve read, the shooting kind of sets the tone for how the city thinks about stuff. We were at Game 3. Great crowd, they fall behind and the whole crowd got tense. It as like, ‘Oh no, something bad is going to happen.’ And it starts from that shooting and it’s just that mind-set they have.”

what in the fuck? Never been to Memphis but how in the hell did he extrapolate that because the crown got quiet when their team got behind...that's kind of a standard reaction...

Bill tries too hard to connect and to be profound. He's just a lucky white guy who fell into a cushy job. Just be that guy. Leave important commentary to others please Bill.

You don't have the pulse of the city, but in your desire to connect and be profound you said something completely fucking stupid.

I'd agree that "desire to connect and be profound [he] said something completely fucking stupid." I wouldn't just write Simmons off as just lucky, though; his rise, as I understand it, must have required much drive and initiative. He's skillful.

I'd disagree with telling any person to leave important commentary to others. Being wrong or stupid doesn't mean someone should shut up for ever-- it means they have learning to do, false notions to be disabused of and so on. But too many people are entirely divorced from the larger society-- and especially the business of news consumption and giving a damn about what's going on around them-- to push social commentary out of sports.

He shot and missed, basically...

its not forever. its until he gets his weight up.

and lucky doesn't mean he hasn't worked hard for his career. it means that the job and position he's in he's lucky to be there, just like wilbon cause there are other writers who work just as hard and are just as skilled and don't get those opportunities.

he needs to study more, and then he can come back and do this type of thing imo.

he always speaks for boston. cause he knows boston. he doesn't know memphis so you can't read a wiki page then decide ok this is why this is happening. it takes more than that. and hopefully he realizes that now

Just like Wilbon? But you wouldn't tell Wilbon to leave the important commentary to others.

When you say someone is "just lucky" or "just a lucky ____," you could apply that to a lottery winner. So it certainly can mean he hasn't worked hard for his career. It's implied. Glad you clarified.

What would've happened to make Simmons realize anything?

he didn't only shoot and miss.

he struck an innocent bystander.
I was using a basketball metaphor for the basketball writer so your response puzzled me at first. "He errantly threw the ball away?"

But I see what you meant. Who was innocently struck? Looks like no harm no foul to me.

I wouldn't tell wilbon that because wilbon wouldn't make that statement. he would have sense to realize it was a bad one. wilbon is measured. there is a difference and that's the point. you can't just say shit and hope it works when it deals with stuff of importance. the statement wasn't about basketball. it was about something larger.

backlash always makes people adjust. if there is backlash, intelligent people which i believe him to be, go back, reflect then adjust. the next time he makes a statement that's gravity is bigger than basketball and could potentially have more backlash he'll think three times before he says it. and he'll say it the correct way.
