Deputies shot, killed in ambush in St. John

LAPLACE, La. - Two St. John Parish deputies were shot and killed while interviewing suspects in an earlier shooting of a deputy at the parking lot for contractors at Valero Energy.

Sheriff Mike Tregre said the incident began when an officer at the parking lot was approached and shot several times by a suspect. That officer was taken to University Hospital and is in surgery but expected to survive, said Tregre.

Working on tips from a civilian and another officer, a vehicle similar to the suspect's was spotted and tracked to a trailer park.

Tregre said that deputies knocked at the door and had two people come outside for an interview about the shooting. He said at that time, a third suspect exited another door and shot Officer Brandon Nielsen, 34, and Officer Jeremy Triche, 27, to death in what he described as a 'ambush.'

Tregre said he believes there are several suspects in custody, some of whom suffered gunshot wounds. He said he believes officers are in control of the situation and that no suspects are on the loose. He said the public is not believed to be in danger.

"It's been a very difficult day," said an emotional Tregre. "I lost two good officers today."

Officer Michael Boyington, 33 and Officer Jason Triche, 30, underwent surgery for their wounds.

The incident occurred on Highway 3217 in the Valero parking lot. The remote parking lot is located in St. John Parish, while the actual plant is located in St. Charles Parish.

Multiple agencies are involved, including a Jefferson Parish SWAT unit, a K-9 unit, St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, St. John Parish Sheriff's Office, New Orleans Police Department, U.S. Marshalls, Slidell Police Department and the state police. Also, helicopters are circling the area.

"Every day you go to work and you never know what's going to happen," said State Police spokesperson Melissa Matey. "When you go to work you don't know if you're going to come home. It's a very difficult day for us."

A deputy car was seen riddled with bullets.

Traffic in the area is very slow and I-10 is suggested as an alternate route.

Emily C. Watkins Elementary located on River Road is closed for teachers and students.

Two deputies killed, two wounded in Louisiana shooting
From Rick Martin, CNN
updated 11:53 AM EDT, Thu August 16, 2012

(CNN) -- Two law enforcement officers died and two were injured in a series of apparently linked shootings early Thursday in LaPlace, Louisiana, authorities said.

The first shooting happened in a parking lot at a steel plant, Sheriff Mike Tregre said. The second happened when officers went to a nearby trailer park to investigate the first shooting and were ambushed by a man armed with what the sheriff described as an assault rifle, he said.

In addition to the two wounded law enforcement officers, some of the five people taken into custody also suffered gunshot wounds, Tregre said.

Investigators were still sorting out what role those detained may have had in the shootings, Tregre said.

Although officers are still working what Tregre described as a "semi-hot scene," he said investigators do not believe anyone else involved in the shooting is at large.

Tregre identified the dead as Deputies Brandon Neilsen, 34, and Jeremy Triche, 28.

The shootings unfolded around 5 a.m. in the parking lot at the Bayout Steel Plant in LaPlace, when a man opened fire on a law enforcement officer working a traffic detail in the lot.

Despite being shot multiple times, the officer was able to describe the suspect to dispatchers, Tregre said. That description, along with a civilian report of a speeding car, led responding officers to a nearby trailer park, he said.

As the deputies were questioning two people, a man came outside and "ambushed my two officers," Tregre said.

Authorities were investigating whether the same weapon was used at both shooting sites, Tregre said.

Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation, he said.

LaPLACE - Two sheriff's deputies in Louisiana have been shot to death and two other deputies were wounded in an early morning shootout in St. John the Baptist Parish, west of New Orleans.

Sheriff Mike Tregre said five people were in custody in connection with the shooting.

Tregre said the first deputy was shot around 5:30 a.m. today by a man in the parking lot of a Valero Energy contractor. That deputy was taken to a nearby hospital and rushed into surgery, he is expected to survive.

The sheriff said tips from the public led them to track a vehicle similar to the shooter's to a nearby trailer park. When two deputies knocked on the door of a residence there, he said two people came out to talk to them.

Then a third person came out from the trailer and "ambushed" the deputies, shooting and killing Officer Brandon Nielsen, 34, and Officer Jeremy Triche, 27. A fourth deputy was also injured.

State Police are handling this investigation.

http://www.fox8live.com/story/19292...art=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=7620050

LaPlace, La. - Two St. John the Baptist Parish deputies were shot and killed Thursday morning and two other deputies were injured in what Sheriff Mike Tregre called an "ambush."

The initial shooting happened around 5am in a remote parking lot at the Valero Refinery.

St. John Parish Sheriff Tregre said an officer was working a security detail near that facility was shot. Tregre did not release the details of the incident.

Tregre said someone then called 911 to report a speeding vehicle traveling down River Road. Deputies located that vehicle at a residence in the Riverview Trailer Court.

When deputies arrived at the trailer, they attempted to question those inside. Tregre said his officers observed a fully clothed person laying under a blanket inside the home. It was at that point someone exited the trailer and opened fire on the deputies with an assault weapon.

The deputies killed in the shooting have been identified as 34 year-old Brandon Nielsen, a two year veteran and 27 year-old Jeremy Triche, a four year veteran.

The injured officers have been identified as 33 year-old Michael Scott Boyington, a three year veteran, and 30 year-old Jason Triche, a 10 year veteran.

Jason Triche is undergoing surgery at University Hospital in New Orleans. Boyington was taken to River Parishes Hospital.

Several law enforcement organizations are assisting in this active investigation including the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office, the Slidell Police Department, and the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office. Louisiana State Police is taking over the investigation.

Tregre will hold a 3pm press conference to update the media. FOX 8 will carry that news conference live.

River Road remains closed at the St. John Parish line.

LAPLACE, LA - Two Louisiana sheriff's deputies died and two others were wounded early Thursday in a shooting outside a steel plant, state police said.
Two suspects are in custody and one remains on the loose, according to state police Trooper Melissa Matey.
Numerous state police SWAT teams, helicopters and troopers were involved in the search for the remaining suspect, Louisiana State Police said.
Matey said two of the deputies with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office were working an off-duty job, while two others were on duty.

At least some of the deputies, whose identities have not yet been released, were on traffic duty at the Bayou Steel Plant in LaPlace when the shootings happened in the parking lot around 5 a.m. (6 a.m. ET), according to State Police Sgt. Ann Dusang.

She initially said the deputies had been ambushed, but Matey later backed off that assertion.

"Right now we're going to say they had an encounter. We're not exactly sure if they were ambushed," she said.

The two wounded officers have been hospitalized, Dusang said.

LAPLACE (AP) — Two sheriff’s deputies in Louisiana were shot to death and two others were injured in an early morning shootout west of New Orleans, authorities said Thursday.

The sheriff in St. John the Baptist Parish said five people are in custody.

A tearful Sheriff Michael Tregre said the incident started when a gunman opened fire for unknown reasons on a deputy working an off-duty traffic detail along a highway that connects U.S. Highway 61 with the busy industrial corridor along the Mississippi River. That deputy was wounded.

Tregre said someone called deputies with a description of a car fleeing the scene, and officers tracked it to a nearby trailer park.

When officers found the car, they handcuffed a suspect outside a trailer, then knocked on its door. Tregre said someone with a dog answered.

“Another person exited that trailer with an assault weapon and ambushed my two officers,” Tregre said. Two deputies were killed and a third was wounded.

Two suspects were wounded in the shootout before officers subdued them, Tregre said.

The dead deputies were identified as Brandon Nielsen, 34, and Jeremy Triche, 27. The wounded officers were Jason Triche, 30, and Michael Boyington, 33. They were being treated at area hospitals but the extent of their injuries was not known. The Triches are not believed to be related.

The suspects were not immediately identified.

The initial shooting occurred around 5:30 a.m. at a parking lot off Louisiana Highway 3217 used by workers in the industrial area about 20 miles west of New Orleans, near the line between St. Charles and St. John the Baptist parishes. A massive grain port also is nearby. There is heavy traffic in the area as shifts change at plants and port facilities.

Bill Day, spokesman for Valero Energy Corp., said one of the deputies was providing security for an off-site parking lot used by contractors working at the Valero St. Charles Refinery.

Day said operations at the refinery had not been affected. Valero employees were being asked to report to work as normal, unless they park at the lot where the incident took place.

Some other plants in the area were letting non-essential workers in the area leave for the day or were telling them not to report for work as the search continued.

Police officers from throughout metro New Orleans rushed to the scene after the shootings in anticipation of a possible manhunt.

Tregre said an active search for suspects was no longer under way. State police are taking over the investigation.
