...well some will say its too early, but its never 'too early' for panic.
Yankee manager, Joe Girardi, was quoted as saying that "its only seventeen games(with 145 more left in the regular season), so I'm not worried." Well, that's so much 'manager-speak'. Former manager Joe Torre used to say the same thing, after the Yankees got their buts royally kicked by the Bostons' (Girardi learned his lessons well during his tenure as Torre's bench coach). Another example of how well he absorbed the teachings of his former mentor was displayed when he left his starter A.J. Burnett in the game after Burnett blew a 6-run lead Yankee lead and proceeded to load the bases, during yesterdays's fiasco!
However, Girardi's relunctance may have been due to his knowledge of what or who was in the Yankee bullpen. They were the usual suspects..a bunch of highly-fatigued, very average, over -worked, rookies, and journeymen. This for a multi-million dollar team, no less!
The pitcher(Abaladejo) who relieved Burnett failed to realise that Burnett had gotten Red Sox third baseman, Mike Lowell, out twice throwing him 'low outside curves', and proceeded to throw him a first-pitch fastball. Lowell deposited the fastball over the fense for a 3-run HR (8-6, Red Sox)....maybe Yankee cather Jorge Posada should receive the credit. But there is plenty of credit and blame to go around. Nevertheless, the Yankee bullpen proceeded to make the game a see-saw battle, at its mesirable best. The Yankees can't seem to get their bullpen established. Now is when the 'flyer's miles' start to increase by bringing in replacements and shuffling guys out. Their top farm club Scranton Wilks-Barre can't be too thrilled about that prospect. They're currently 13-0, and look forward to winning the AAA-International League.
But, as Yankee manager Joe Girardi said, " "it's too early to worry..."Ironically, he said that last year, and you know how that ended. In fact, all baseball managers utter similar comments. I remember Detroit manager,Leyman saying the same thing, when Detroit had its losing start beginning the 2008 season....and you know how the Tigers finished the year.
Speaking of Detroit calls to mind the so-called "Boy Wonder" we got from the Tigers in the 2006 Gary Sheffield trade, Humberto Sanchez He was secretly 'released' from the Yankee organization. The guy was injured (arm trouble) when we got him, and was currently rehabbing that same injury. So much for the "can't miss" label...this falls into the category of "Big Loss, No Gain".The Tigers were really 'high' on that guy.
The Yankees need to return Joba Chaimberlain to his earlier role of set-up man for Mariano Rivera. Joba's role as a starter as been inconsistent, at best. Four/ five innings won't get it. It simply leads to an 'overworked bullpen'.
Have you noticed that the New York Yankees perform like a 'bunch of coporate managers', while other teams seem to ooze 'team chemistry'. Coincidence? Mmm. Maybe.
The Dl list is starting to grow, and we're only into the first month of the season. You can now include the names of Brian Bruney (RP), Domasco Marte(RP), Cody Ransom (3B), Xaiver Nady (OF), and Chin-Ming Wang(SP). There will sure to be others.....GURANTEED!
Some players view it as an opportunity to get needed R&R....and get paid while doing it.
