Getting former Detroit Tiger Gary Sheffield for only $400,000 is a bargain...even with all of the baggage (0n-the-field and off).
He won't provide them with any 'slick fielding' although there has been some talk about him replacing curent RF, Ryan Church. But RF is almost as important as CF, demanding sharp,de
fensive play. Sheffield has been saddled with 'shoulder problems lately--although he says the weak shoulder no longer exists (what else would he say, right?). There was a reason why his two previous employers used him as a DH. However, he did hit 25-HR's for the Tigers in 2007, before hurting that shoulder. Unfortunately, the NL doesn't offer the luxury of DH'ing. But the Mets plan on giving him a legitimate shot in rightfield. Maybe what's said about 'riding a bicycle' is true.
Gary was never enamored about being a DH, but, as long as he got his at-bats he dealt with it...relunctantly. Sorta like taking one for the team..so to speak. Now, he gets his chance to surprise a lot of critics (especially the Detroit Tigers), and end his career--a very productive career--- on a 'posiitive' and 'high' note.
Good luck. Never any question about your bat. Just your 'D'.
