Pixar's sci-fi adventure Elio is ready to blast off.

The animated feature follows Elio Solis, an 11-year-old space enthusiast who unwittingly becomes Earth's first intergalactic ambassador after being abducted by aliens and whisked to the mysterious Communiverse.

According to the official synopsis, Elio's adventure will force him to "form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be."

Elio is already receiving positive reviews from both critics and audiences, who have praised the movie for its heart, themes, and cosmic visuals. The film's voice cast is equally special, featuring a mix of established stars and rising talents, including Yonas Kibreab, Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña, and gravel-voiced Brad Garrett.

Below, we've rounded up the full cast list. Read on to find out who voices which character in Elio and where you may have seen (or heard) them before.

Leading the charge is Yonas Kibreab, a talented teenage actor best known for his roles on Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), Sweet Tooth (2023), and Pretty Freekin Scary (2023).

Kibreab is no stranger to voice acting, with credits on Blaze and the Monster Machines (2022–2024), Merry Little Batman (2023), Firebuds (2023–2024), and Pupstruction (2023–2025).

Next up for the young star is the musical Reimagined, where he'll star alongside Joel McHale and Paula Patton.

Kibreab lends his voice to the title role in Elio, playing a socially awkward 11-year-old boy who gets mistaken for Earth's ambassador after being abducted by aliens.

The actor previously told Moviefone that he can relate to his character Elio "in a lot of ways," explaining, "I feel like he's such a quirky kid. He doesn't care about what people think, and he's not afraid to be himself. I think that's something that I must really channel, just like Elio. He's taught me to always be myself, the best self I can be."

Zoe Saldaña is no stranger to sci-fi blockbusters, having emerged as one of the genre's most bankable stars with leading roles in Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), the three highest-grossing films of all time.

In 2024, Saldaña received widespread critical acclaim for her performance as Rita Mora Castro in the musical crime drama Emilia Pérez, sweeping awards season and taking home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She currently stars as CIA officer Joe McNamara in the Paramount+ spy series Lioness (2023–present). Next up, fans can catch her reprising her role as Neytiri in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) and the franchise's untitled fourth film, currently slated for 2029.

Saldaña lends her voice to Olga, Elio's aunt and the head of a classified military project.

According to co-director Madeline Sharafian, Saldaña was instrumental in bringing Olga to life as the "rich, juicy character" the team had originally envisioned.

"She brought so much nuance to this character, which I feel like is a bit of a tricky character," she told Entertainment Weekly. "People don't always like seeing non-perfect parental figures on screen, but she did this incredible job of threading the needle of vulnerability. You can tell she cares at her core, but she's not perfect when you first meet her."

Child star Remy Edgerly is making a name for himself in the world of voice acting, following in the footsteps of his father, Chris Edgerly (The Simpsons, DreamWorks Dragons).

Despite his young age, Remy already has some impressive credits under his belt, including roles in video games, series, and films such as Kingdom Hearts III (2019), Sing 2 (2021), T.O.T.S. (2019–2022), and Pretzel and the Puppies (2022–2023).

In Elio, Edgerly voices Glordon, a lovable, worm-like alien who forms an instant friendship with Elio.

Three-time Emmy winner Brad Garrett is practically Pixar royalty at this point, seeing as Elio marks his fifth collaboration with the animation studio. The actor previously delivered his deep, unmistakable grumble in A Bug's Life (1998), Finding Nemo (2004), Ratatouille (2007), and Finding Dory (2016).

Garrett first rose to fame as a stand-up comedian before landing his breakout role as Robert Barone on beloved sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond (1996–2005). Since then, he's continued to pop up in both comedic and dramatic roles, with credits that include 'Til Death (2006–2010), Fargo (2015), Single Parents (2018–2020), High Desert (2023), and Saturday Night (2024).

As of 2025, he's still active in the stand-up scene, regularly performing at his own venue, Brad Garrett's Comedy Club, in Las Vegas.

Garrett voices the antagonist Lord Grigon, a hulking alien warlord and ambassador who is Glordon's father.

At the world premiere of Elio, the actor described his character as "a villain with quite a few issues — like most villains."

He added, "I think what we learn about Grigon is that being a father is a lot more important than he may [have] thought, and maybe he wants to be a better father."

Actress, activist, and Gossip Girl punchline Jameela Jamil will always be remembered as the effortlessly glamorous Tahani Al-Jamil on NBC's The Good Place (2016–2020), a role that catapulted her to new heights of fame.

She's since leveraged her star power and taken on a range of projects, lending her voice to animated hits like Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022), DC League of Super-Pets (2022), and Star Trek: Prodigy (2021–2024). On the live-action side, she's appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022), Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin (2022), and Poker Face (2023).

Jamil's upcoming slate is packed, with roles in A Merry Little Ex-Mas (2025), Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie (2026), and Netflix's upcoming adaptation of People We Meet on Vacation, based on the bestselling novel by Emily Henry.

Beyond acting, Jamil continues to use her platform as a host and outspoken activist, championing issues around body image, mental health, and inclusivity.

In Elio, Jamil voices Questa, an alien ambassador with elegance and bite. During a June 16 appearance on the British talk show This Morning, Jamil described Questa as someone who "leads with such dignity and strength," but added that she loves the fact that her character is also "a bit cheeky" and "really nosy."

She later admitted she relates to the ambassador's nurturing spirit of "wanting to boost others along" and "encourage other people to fulfill their potential."

Shirley Henderson as OOOOO

Award-winning actress Shirley Henderson has appeared in a diverse range of projects over the last several decades, including Trainspotting (1996) and its 2017 sequel, Topsy-Turvy (1999), and the beloved Bridget Jones film series (2001–2025).

For many, she'll forever be known as the flirty Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) and The Goblet of Fire (2005).

On television, Henderson has shown her range with standout roles in The Way We Live Now (2001), Southcliffe (2013), Happy Valley (2016), and most recently, Netflix's crime thriller Dept. Q (2025).

Now, Henderson takes a quirky turn as the voice of OOOOO in Elio, a small but mighty gelatinous supercomputer.

Described by animation supervisor Travis Hathaway to IndieWire as "a Swiss Army knife made of droplets moving in space with moving circuitry inside her," OOOOO can transform into a screen, a record player, a projector, or even "a pen for Elio to write with."

German actor and filmmaker Matthias Schweighöfer has been steadily rising in Hollywood over the years. American audiences probably recognize him best from Valkyrie (2008) and Zack Snyder's zombie heist film Army of the Dead (2021). Schweighöfer returned to the franchise in Army of Thieves (2021), a prequel he also directed.

In 2023, he briefly appeared as German theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg in Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning biographical thriller, Oppenheimer.

Looking ahead, the actor stars in the German historical drama Amrum, which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and is set to hit German theaters on Sept. 25.

In Elio, Schweighöfer voices Tegmen, an alien ambassador.

Brandon Moon is a rising star with just a handful of credits so far. Before lending his voice to Elio, he starred in Swamper (2021) and Virtual Battles (2023).

Japanese comedian, actress, and fashion designer Naomi Watanabe first burst into the spotlight with her spot-on celebrity impersonations, most famously, Beyoncé, which earned her the nickname "the Japanese Beyoncé."

Since then, she's taken her talents in all kinds of directions, singing on the remix of Doja Cat's hit "Kiss Me More," starring in Japanese films like The Untold Tale of the Three Kingdoms (2020) and Omusubi (2025), and building a voice-acting résumé with roles in Sazae-san (2007), Sailor Moon Eternal (2021), and Deemo: Memorial Keys (2022).

In Elio, Watanabe voices Auva, an alien ambassador. It's her first English-language voice role. Watanabe's voice, per co-director Sharafiani, "captured the curiosity and sweetness of Auva perfectly."

Box Office: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Rules Again as ‘Elio’ Heads for Lowest Opening in Pixar History

'Elio' looks to debut in third place behind the live-action 'Dragon' pic and Danny Boyle's zombie sequel '28 Years Later,' which is opening in second place with a solid $30 million or more.

Ouch.
Universal’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon will have no trouble staying No. 1 in its second weekend with an estimated $35.7 million despite the entry of the zombie sequel 28 Years Later and the animated Elio — which is headed for the lowest opening in the history of Pixar amid a crowded marketplace for family fare.
Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel, from Sony, topped Friday’s chart with $14 million, including $5.8 million in Thursday previews, but will be overtaken by How to Train Your Dragon, from the Universal-owned DreamWorks Animation, sometime on Saturday.

Danny Boyle Says He Couldn't Make 'Slumdog Millionaire' Today

A few weeks ago, 28 Years Later was tracking to open to $35 million, with more bullish pundits thinking it could come in north of $40 million. Instead, it’s headed for a solid $30 million to $31 million domestic start. Similar to the family space, some are speculating that the horror marketplace may be over-saturated, led by the box office hit Final Destination: Bloodlines.
28 Years Later will still mark the biggest opening of Boyle’s career and reunites the filmmaker with writer Alex Garland 25 years after 28 Days hit the big screen and became a cult classic. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes star in what’s the first installment in a planned trilogy.
Reviewers have widely embraced the R-rated title, but actual moviegoers are somewhat less enthusiastic; its current audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 67 percent, compared to a 90 percent critics’ score. At the same time, it’s garnering decent exit scores from leading exit-polling service PostTrak. And it earned a B CinemaScore, which is like an A grade when it comes to horror fare.
Facing fierce competition from How to Train Your Dragon and fellow Disney release Lilo & Stitch, Elio took in $9 million on Friday for a projected third-place domestic opening in the $20 million to $22 million range. Elio — an original film about a young boy whose wish to travel to outer space and interact with aliens comes true — was expected to open to at least $30 million domestically.
But with interest stalling in recent days, Disney insiders lowered their projections to $20 million to $25 million as Pixar braced for the worst 3-day opening in its history behind Elemental ($29.6 million) in June 2023 and its very first film, 1995’s Toy Story ($29.1 million), not adjusted for inflation. Toy Story opened over Thanksgiving and amassed $39 million over the long five-day holiday weekend.
In 2023, Elemental‘s opening was called nothing short of a debacle, yet it turned into a sleeper hit on its way to earning nearly $500 million globally. Pixar and parent company Disney, are confident that Elio will have the same sort of staying power throughout the summer when kids are sprung from school. So far, Elio is graced with a better critics score on Rotten Tomatoes than Elemental, as well as glowing PostTrak exit results and an A CinemaScore, including an A+ from kids.
Pixar has been struggling to find its footing in a world where original animated stories don’t open to the heights they once did — think north of $70 million — in the post-pandemic world. And during the pandemic years, then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek decided to send three Pixar titles straight to Disney+ domestically, including Turning Red, Luca and the Oscar-winning Soul, a decision rivals said taught families to wait to watch a film at home. (All three were considered streaming hits.)
But Pixar and Disney reversed course and are once again committed to telling original theatrical stories, mixed in with known IP, such as last year’s blockbuster and record-shattering Inside Out 2, the top-grossing pic of 2024, the top ever title for Pixar and the top animated movie of all time with more than $1.69 billion in worldwide ticket sales, not adjusted for inflation. (As fate would have it, Inside Out 2 opened on the same June weekend a year ago.)
The live-action Lilo & Stitch remains a force to be reckoned with in its fifth weekend, and could earn as much as $9 million to $10 million domestically for a fourth-place finish. Also, now in its fifth weekend, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning continues to show staying power and is expected to round out the top five with $7 million.
A24’s specialty romantic drama Materialists continues to do well, and is expected come in sixth domestically with an estimated $5.5 million to $6 million.
Numbers will be updated Sunday morning.
