Saw these guys perform at Pure a couple months back just found they shit on youtube. Artist based out of D.C. Since the success of Wale and loosely Fatrell D.C. is trying to pump out more artist. What say you D.C. folk about this guy does he have the goods to represent the capitol? I thought his shit was cool.

I thought this was going to be a GO-GO/HIP HOP mix.....

Naw...

Cats out here trying to move away from the Go-Go shit. IMO I think any hip-hop coming out of D.C. should be a meld of those two sounds to truly represent the culture. Everyone trying to have them lex luger crank beats.

Yea, that's a travesty. I remember when they couldn't give a fuck about rap in general and any rap group passing through would have to perform with a band to get a local following and support base. Atleast Wale keeps a go-go influenced sound.

Also, fuck any new rap group with the name "mafia" in their name. Fuck that outdated shit.

Man, I was always proud the DC folks had their own music, & I loved the fact it was so African........

Yeah the upcoming hip-hop acts at least. The Go-Go shows are still there but the new hip-hop sounds coming out seem to be divorced from that sound all together. I suppose D.C. is still trying to find that sound among hip-hop that is uniquely there own.

It is a travesty they ignore that native sound but I suppose these upcoming acts are doing getting the local support anyway so they don't care about the Go-Go side of it.

Being a Cali dude I've come to appreciate the Go-Go sound for this exact reason it has an Afro beat to it and it's original.

Man the DC subway always trips me out whenever I'm there.... shit look like some 70s futurist vision of a nuclear reactor facility.

It's got a weird vibe to it.

no. seems too generic on 1st listen.

dc's hiphop scene is looking better tho.

wale did put a spotlight on the dmv.

gogo is still here but its not big as it used to be. like someone said, back in the day rap played a back seat to gogo. if it wasnt face, wayne, devin, or big lota cats out here didnt even wanna hear rap music. there were always pockets of hiphop heads tho. thats all flip flopped now but lotta people have favorites in both genres.

rip chuck.

Yeah everyone is trying to do Hip-Hop in D.C. now. Don't know if it's for the music or the bitches though. I see so many of these acts on stage at clubs performing weak and generic shit as you say but the club be packed full of bitches jumping up and down at the weak ass shit. :smh:

My next move is to find the black punk rock or metal scene if there is one. I see too many dudes riff on their guitar when I enter and exit the metro, gotta be some. If you know where I can here some cool black rock or metal or just metal holla. Get my head bang on.

a dope annual event that started last year and coming back up on in august is trillectro. basically puts some dope up and coming hiphop acts w/ rave/electronic acts in the same outdoor venue and everybody has a good time. hands down the best music festival in dc.

Go-Go will be around but seeing as thought it got pushed to the burbs due to the crowd it attracted, bands had to switch it up and now do "Grown and Sexy" shit instead of the wilder stuff we had in the early to late 90s.

D.C. has folks but too many are cookie cutter. I still check for Diamond District, Oddissee, Ardamus, Fat Trel (when he has good production) and so forth.

Chuck left a big void in our culture, that's for sure.

I remember a time these were on our walls after stealing them off lamposts

old-school-go-go-posters.jpg

I hate to hear these youngins moving away from a sound that was purely D.C. no matter where you were in the country, if you heard someone playing Junk, BYB, NEG, RE you knew they were from around the way somewhere.

The internet made the world much smaller, so D.C. lost a lot of it's native culture when this happened. Our style of dress and even slang has changed and somewhat ,elded with all the other cities. Those posters marked a time where Go-Go WAS Go-Go! I still run into people who went to school here or drove from wherever to hear the sound!

Used to be you could tell who we were simply by seeing what we wore or how we spoke.
