Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier had spinal stabilization surgery Wednesday, the team announced Thursday.

Dr. Anthony Alessi, a neurologist who consults with the NFLPA, told Michele Steele of ESPN.com that Shazier "may not play football again" and that this surgery indicates "this is a much more severe situation on our hands than we thought." Alessi added that surgery would be needed when bones around the spine are dislocated and that this injury is more severe than a contusion, according to Steele.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that Shazier will need months of recovery "before he considers a return to football."

Shazier has been in the hospital since injuring his spine in Pittsburgh's Monday night win over the Bengals. The team initially said he would not require surgery.

Shazier was injured early in game after hitting Bengals receiver Josh Malone with the crown of his helmet. He went down to the ground and immediately reached for his back after the hit.

Shazier is staying in Cincinnati at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center until Wednesday when he was moved to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he is now.

Shazier, 25, was a first round pick by the Steelers in 2014. He was a Pro Bowler last season and is leading Pittsburgh in tackles this year.

I ain't gonna lie, I enjoyed the FUCK out of football! Loved it! All the kick/punt returns and touchdown catches and interceptions. Loved it all. Am I still paying for some of the hits, sure. Would I do it all over again? You betcha! My son wanted to play in high school, but then he discovered rugby and never looked back.Like I said the night he got, I'm all for his career being over, as long as he can still walk and enjoy the rest of his life.

Prayers up to this young man... Hope even if he can't play anymore he regains all of his motion and lives a painless productive life... 25 years old, Damn :smh:

....just ended my Son's football career at 5 years old... Basketball it is...

Damn, thats sad!!! American football days are numbered!!

Not sure how long you played, but for players who play past college, the accumulation of hits and damage has to be exponentially greater than anything most of us have experienced or imagined. I'm not saying they wouldn't do it again, I'm just saying, alot of dudes paying a helluva price.

Man, when you consider what you have to sacrifice to even get to that level, I'm sure it's a price many would rethink before paying it.

Yep. Just ended my son's football career as well: Defensive Player Of The Year for his 7 year old flag football league.

It ain't worth the risk.

*two cents*

Yep, my Son went nuts when I told him. LOVES football but hopefully catching it so young he will get over it

This is exactly why it won’t happen
Exactly why it should.

These men risk life and limb for these teams and of they get hurt the team has ZERO responsibility to provide compensation?

I pay disabity insurance for EVERY SINGLE person in my Employ, why don' they?

He'll never play again but I just want him to be able to walk at his wedding. He's a good dude. Best of luck to him.

I hope your son adheres to your wishes, but if he truly loves it, he may still try to play or constantly nag you about it. My pops threatened all kinds of ass whippings if I didn't stop playing football with the older kids, but I loved the game more than I feared those ass whippings. For the record, he never whipped me. When he saw how much better me and my friends were than the other kids during our little league games, he understood.
