Need advice on a suit for an interview...

I don't have an interview for any particular job yet, but what type of suit or clothes are acceptable. I already have my own perceptions, but I wanted to see if they coincided with what you all might also think is appropriate. I already don't like wearing suits (I do like dressing up however, just not a 3 piece and shoes), but I think it's important to have a few suits in your wardrobe for interviews and important meetings and such.

Another quick question...what's the deal with facial hair and the corporate world. I'm about to get promoted at my job that I am at now, nothing major, hell it's not even an office job, but they want me to cut all my facial hair except for my mustache...I don't see the big problem with facial hair, or hair period as long as it's neat and presentable. I have a simple goatee, it's not sloppy, and I shave about every two or three days so it's well kept too, but these mothafuckaz want me walking around looking like a little boy.

If they want you to get rid of the facial hair, get rid of it. Whats the problem. Sometimes you have to play the game propa if you plan to be in the game. Some places it doesn't matter but depending on the company cliente, it's part of the dress code. Facial hair is overrated anyway.

Suits, a two piece hookup: jacket and pants is enough. Black or navy. Red tie and white shirt. Of course black shoes and socks.

I know you gotta play the game...but really is the client or whoever I'm associating with gonna look at my goatee and think they're dealing with some kinda 17th century pirate, turn around and not do business. I know some people are particular like that, but those people are nutbags anyway. And depending on the situation I could understand being that particular.

I was just curious, why do employers do that? Conformity and all that bullshit I guess, right...

On the original note...No grays? And is it too much to deviate from the norm just a little, on certain colors, not like green or anything, but something where I might stand out from the hundreds of other androids that are interviewing for the same position.

If you have a small budget, get a suit from S&K or Men's Warehouse. Go for a 3 button black, navy blue or grey suit. Don't wear any loud colored suits because that shit equates with ignorance. People wearing loud colored suits want to be seen. Notice who wear loud colored suits like pimps and backwards ass church people (not all church goers though). Plus look where loud colored suits are sold.

To the facial hair issue: What's more important to you, making more money or having hair on your face? 'nuff said...

To the interview dress style:
  • Suit (solid color - navy or dark grey)
  • Long sleeve shirt (white or coordinated with the suit)
  • Belt (same color as your shoes)
  • Tie (stick with silk ties, they lay better)
  • Dark socks (same color as shoes)
  • conservative leather shoes (same color as belt, make sure the shoes are polished)
  • Little or no jewelry (conservative watch and wedding band tops)
  • Neat, professional hairstyle
  • Limit the aftershave (In fact, avoid wearing anything like colognes or scented oils)
  • Neatly trimmed nails
  • Portfolio or briefcase (no walking in with a handful of papers, it looks sloppy)
  • Get your clothes ready the night before, so you don't have to spend time getting them ready on the day of the interview.
  • If your clothes are dry clean only (which they should be), take them to the cleaners after an interview, so they're ready for next time.
  • Bring a breath mint, not gum, and use it before you enter the building. You want your breath to smell good w/o your looking like you're eating lunch.

I came in to contribute but GreedySmurf and VegasGuy have given advice that probably cannot be improved upon. Take their recommendations and you have built the foundation for success in corporate america. The sooner you conform and stack your bread, the sooner you can unplug from the matrix and do you. That is just MY personal mooto.

That's my wooden nickel.
