I copped one of those eMachine laptops in January for $298 (2.4GHz Dual Core, 2GB, 250GB HD, media card reader, DVD burner) and that shit works like a champ. Also get yourself a warranty from Squaretrade.com. They're always giving 30% of the warranties and their prices are usually cheaper from the get go. Even the Walmart warranty won't break the pockets.

Go to Sonystyle.com website and look for some refurbished or clearance laptops on there. They have the old ultra light but powerful and beautiful Z series there for $800 and some other ones for under $700

Hit or miss(like Toshiba's). I still use my dv9000 to this day(5 year old laptop), but I know alot of people who had issues.

Trying to wait for this Dell inspiron 15R to hit with tax and shipping for under $500 or a little over. Tax, environmental fee and shipping are high in my area.

Delloutlet.com - you may find something good for that price range - just make sure it has discrete graphics ATI Radeon or Nvidia something... for that price.
