RAEFORD, N.C. - A North Carolina teacher says she was suspended because the district found out she's a part-time pole dancing instructor.

Kandice Mason works at West Hoke County Middle School in Raeford. She posted a video of her dancing on her private Facebook page. The school district found out about it and suspended her.

“I was really excited,” Mason told WSOC. “I had already been given my classroom.”

The single mother of two has a masters in psychology, bachelors in English and a certificate in phlebotomy.


She’s also a self-taught pole dancer, using it to unwind in her home after long days in the classroom.

“That’s how I stay in shape,” Mason said. “That’s how I feel like I can express myself and have time for myself.”

Hoke County Schools would not specify why Mason was suspended but cited a policy that says employees should be role models even when they're not at work.

“I’ve worked so hard to try and make sure I can provide for my daughters and our livelihood to have it jeopardized just for doing something that I’m passionate about,” Mason said.


Mason has been suspended with pay pending an investigation.

“I’ve never felt ashamed of pole dancing. It's just an art for me,” Mason said “I just don’t see it as negative.”

I have no beef with it personally, but in this day and age, you had to know.

If you have an adult-oriented hobby (or even anything related to that), it's most likely going to get back to your day job. There's too many snitches and petty people out there now to keep stuff like that on the down low. I've had a few friends manage to balance it as best they can, but they don't work for a school that can/will fire them over even the hint of a controversy.
 
I don't see anything wrong with it.

It's a hobby or something she does that does NOT define her and that she keeps separate from her teaching activities. Unlike some women...

Drinking is an adult oriented hobby. SALSA is sexual as fuck so would she have gotten suspended for that too? Nah man this some straight up bullshit.
 
she’s black...they’ve probably been targeting her for a while and are using this as an excuse to try and fire her...there’s no real/strong union to go to bat for her either...hopefully she tries and fights it tho

:smh: Folks snitching on themselves these days. People just lose their fucking minds with social media. Posting for attention and it backfires. I kept telling people all this firing over social media shit wouldn't stop with just what they wanted people fired over. It's just some professions where you can't attention whore. Folks have to use some common sense in an age where social media gets people fired.

I don't want her fired, but we live in a world where people are hyper-sensitive and you have to watch what you post on social media. That's just reality.

Not for nothing, but if my teacher were pole dancing and we had video, class would never been the same. :eek: I know how we got down in school. Comments would have been crazy. Teacher would probably have to move to another school.

You know they have to keep in line with the narrative.

Just like that piece of shit that strangled his entire family out in Colorado, they just HAD to mention that they went through bankruptcy a few years ago, as if to provide some sort of context to the why of the situation. No mention of any past criminal record. Just some hardship to justify the evil.

Knowing that if it was a minority, the narrative would be how they're just inherently evil (terrorist, life long criminal) and no other factors figures into the situation.

The kicker is that the wife was actually doing well in some MLM business she was involved in. She was recognized and everything. But you didn't hear about it.....conflicts with the entire bankruptcy, no way out notion, doesn't it?
 
Although I agree about people being stupid on social media; I would not put her in that category. If she posted a video of her doing it on stage at a strip club, or if she is wearing a g-string and a bra on Facebook while doing it....yeah stupid. ...but if she's just doing it clothed in her house or studio, she may have a legal case depending on their rules/contracts.
Pole dancing is an actual workout now, like rumba and shit.

she's a teacher....and she's black.....schools and shit have their morals clauses which stretch widely according to their interpretations...she shoulda moved to a state where teachers get paid more (Jersey, N.Y....in the +$100k area, easy) if she needed extra cash.... all they see is a strippa…..period..... and in North Carolina too?....bible belt country?....she needed to lose her job with that stunt.....she can do it full time now....:hmm:

First, you had to know that when I said "adult-oriented", I meant adult-oriented. We're on the board, man. Come on.

Second, real talk, while I wouldn't want her suspended over some BS like drinking or dancing (note, I said I didn't have an issue with the pole dancing thing, either), the world is the world. You have to be aware of your environment and/or it's level of fairness. People, especially our people, don't get a fair shake. Like I said, I know all kinds of people that do all manners of things, and they keep those things to the grown up side of their world. They are also some of the best teachers and finest people in general. It's a lot easier to feel that way when you know people like that first hand.

In a perfect world, this wouldn't even be an issue, but we know the world isn't perfect.
