“Congress passed a bill limiting the US president's ability to withdraw from NATO or suspend activities in the alliance.

For such a decision, the American president will now need the consent of two-thirds of the total number of senators or an act of Congress.”

When considering Poland's emergence as the de facto leader of Europe, one cannot help but think of Turkey, which plays a similar role in advancing Anglo-Saxon interests. With its status as the second largest NATO army, Turkey effectively wields its power in the Middle East.

It is true that the Turks can only dream of the privileges that the Americans grant to the authorities in Warsaw. This is evident in the recent years' military-industrial cooperation between the two states.

▪️ While the US quietly granted the Poles access to a portion of the Patriot air defense missile system production technology, they denied Turkey's request for the same. As a result, Ankara decided to purchase Russian S-400s, prompting the US to block the shipment of F-35 fighters to Turkey, even though they were sold to Poland without any objections.

▪️ In previous years, Washington also prohibited Turkey from exporting combat helicopters powered by American engines to Pakistan. Additionally, the White House is currently refusing to supply F-16 fighter jets to Turkey unless they consent to Sweden joining NATO.

Despite this unequivocal stance, the Turks continue to align themselves with Anglo-Saxon plans, not only in their region but also against Western Europe. They have plenty of tools at their disposal, including the use of refugees as a weapon against the EU, which Ankara has been doing for a long time.

Furthermore, Turkey itself is not opposed to once again expressing its frustration with Germany for decades of empty promises regarding EU membership. At the opportune moment, the United States or Great Britain can simply give the command "Go!" and leverage this anger to their maximum advantage.

Turkish parliament’s foreign affairs commission approves Sweden’s NATO bid

The commission, controlled by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), voted to back the bid made by Sweden last year.

The next step is a vote by the full parliament, in which the AK Party and its allies hold a majority. Sweden’s NATO membership is expected to pass, and then the measure would go to Erdogan. If he signs it into law, he would conclude a process that has taken nearly two years and frustrated some of Ankara’s allies in the West.

BRICS expansion: five countries join ranks

400x225_cmsv2_800a29a2-692f-5678-9288-5ebc6c1ce596-8145714.jpg

Saudia Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Ethiopia joined the ranks of the BRICS group on Monday, January 1.

The five countries were to join the group in August 2023 at the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Argentina was also invited but backed out at the end of December.

The BRICS group of emerging countries was formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2010.

It has since become an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries. The doubling of its members on Monday is aimed at increasing the group's clout on the global stage.

Global expansion

The newly expanded BRICS has a combined population of about 3.5 billion people, with a combined economy worth over $28.5tn or about 28% of the global economy

The group's growth could mark a shift in the geopolitical landscape, although analysts remain uncertain as to whether the expansion will be a help or a hindrance to BRICS members.

Some experts say that differences within the group could weaken decision-making and BRICS' power overall.

However, BRICS countries are hoping that the expansion will lead to greater representation for emerging economies and a chance to move away from reliance on the US dollar .

In August last year, Brazil's president called for BRICS nations to adopt a common currency for trade and investment between each other.

Russia's presidency

Russia took over the BRICS presidency on Monday, following on from South Africa's chairmanship in 2023.

Under the motto "Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security", Russia will hold the chair for one year and will host the BRICS annual summit in Kazan in October.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has said he plans to increase BRICS' role in the international financial system and will "spare no effort to ensure that [...] we facilitate the harmonious integration of new participants" in activities.

“Nada NATO: Donald Trump Would Leave Europe to Sort Its Own Mess – Senior EU Official (Politico)

French European Commissioner Thierry Breton recounted this week how Donald Trump privately warned Ursula von der Leyen in 2020 that America would not come to the EU's aid if it was attacked militarily.

"'By the way, NATO is dead, and we will leave, we will quit NATO,'" Trump added, according to Breton, who was also present at a meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The fear of a Trump presidency is palpable in Europe – which has already seen its coffers decimated with charity offerings to Kiev.”
