@ this nigga acting like Hip Hop is moving forward now
Shit is ten times worse than when he Made "Hip Hop is Dead"
im gonna catch hell for this, but jay-z is the goat. not rakim, not melle mel. i know the kneejerk response is gonna be "jay-z capitalized off the void created by the absence of big & 2pac, more so big" ....first off thats what youre supposed to do, capitalize off opportunities. mase, dmx, snoop, hell even master p couldve stepped into that limelight. they all had varying degrees of success. if you look at his lyrical transition, wordplay, influence on pop culture (everyone wearing a throwback jersey, then everybody wearing a button down shirt with a fitted, platinum jewelry, cristal) hell his influence on other rappers (listen to biggie on ready to die then listen to life after death. rakim is close but his window of dopeness was too small (86-90)

jay-z is the best all around.
he might not be the best in a single catagory but when you examine his career he is the best all time.
you lost me therethats what im saying. yes, he did lose the battle to nas. he did come with some harsh lyrics for nas after ether (blueprint 2 was a hard record) but it was too little too late at that point. imo, he also lost by doing a freestyle at jim jones over the "ballin" beat. not because jim jones outrapped him but because he lost for acknowledging jim jones. its like jordan on the floor dropping 40 a night and the 11th man on the bench of the clippers yells "you're a bum!" & jordan goes to the other team's bench to fight him
i will say that lil wayne is closing in rapidly. i want to see what he comes with when he's released next month
you lost me there
ehh, maybe im bugging but the boy's work ethic is insane. lately every song i hear from him he has one line that has me doing the![]()
face. the dude is good

I would have agreed but I know too much about this game and you are in accurate on some points....
When you say he is the goat not Rakim and state that Rakim's dopeness was between (86-90) you are way off. He was more influential than Jay could ever be. Name a list of money making rappers/hip hop mcs that he influenced. Using the Biggie comparison was also incorrect because Biggie immitated Pac's life-style and even describe Pac in one of the songs on the "Life After Death" album.
As for Rakim's influence...EMINEM, CANIBUS, NAS, AZ, PETE ROCK, WILL SMITH, KID N PLAY, BIG DADDY KANE, SHAQ, MIC GERONIMO, BUCK SHOT (FROM BLACK MOON), 2PAC, and the list goes on. How can you compare that to Jay-Z when he jumped on to BIG DADDY KANE's vibe and he even admitted it. Furthermore, the listener's mind state has changed from lyricism (Hip Hop) to commercialism (RAP). So, no matter how dope Rakim may be...most aren't checking for him nor do they know who he is and could care less to what he's talking about.
To say that Ma$e and DMX couldn't step into that limelight is inaccurate because both didn't want to (MA$E left being scared of dieing and DMX never portrayed himself as a flosser...he portrayed himself as a robber and hitman).
And Jersey throwbacks...was going on before Jay, he jumped on it like everyone else.
And Jay's whole career of selling records and showing skill is still in the shadow of a white boy (EMINEM). Not to mention Em produces which puts him a step above.
So to say that he's the greatest of all time as far as Hip Hop is concern...is too far from the truth. He is the GREATEST RAPPER (not hip hop artist) OF ALL TIME. And he admitted that also when he stated that in one of his rhymes.
Before voicing this opinion...please, I urge you to study and find out what is Hip Hop and what is RAP. There is a difference.
Jay is an Emcee turned Rapper who tried his best to stay as Hip Hop as possible while getting that RAP money. He is a business man. He don't let his love for Hip Hop or as an Emcee to overshadow his judgment with making sound business decisions. He learned to not let his pride get in the way of progress.
He took the Jordan route...and you can't be mad at that.
jay's influenced also
kanye
lil wayne
drake
game
bleek
im sure there are more that im forgetting
see, you gonna make start picking apart rakim for the sake of making my point about jay-z which i really don't want to do. i'll tell you what, if you're gonna say rakim is #1, then big daddy kane has to be #1a. matter of fact i'll give kane the edge in that he would drop knowledge & he would still drop songs for the girls & not sound completely like a sucker (until that whole "prince of darkness" stage but we wont talk about that). basically his window was the same as rakim's. as a matter of fact of that particular era the ones who did the best job of making relevant music past 1990 were krs1 & ll cool j but for whatever reason their names dont come up in goat talk. rakim didnt do it at a high level long enough. once i saw him in that video for dont sweat the technique with the white bitches drinking champagne he was on the downside.
but maybe i need to bone up on my hiphop a little![]()
Kanye was and is nothing like Jay. He just gives Jay respect...respect and influence are two totally different things.
Drake is nothing like Jay...he is in his own lane and would be considered as an average rapper if he had came out during the 90s...meaning he would not get any burn or attention.
Game is influenced by many including PAC, Rakim, and others.
Lil Wayne didn't jump on the Jay influence until or around the time of Biggie's passing. If you were to go back an listen to Lil Wayne's earlier stuff you would see no Jay influence. So try again. As previously stated...do research before voicing this opinion.
Now there are many threads on BGOL about the Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Michael Jackson, and Prince influence. Read those before stating what you just stated.
jay-z is the best all around.
he might not be the best in a single catagory but when you examine his career he is the best all time.
em has had a better career than jigga but i disagree either way. Ain't no best.
Rakim's influence is why many consider him the GOAT.
