This list seems more like a popularity list than an All-Star list. Not sayiing these aren't legitimate All-Stars but....

As much as I enjoyed watching Ozzie Smith his 267 batting average disqualifies him. How can you pick Ozzie Smith over Derek Jeter? Jeter has a lifetime 317 batting average.

I'm not going to pick this list apart but you need to rethink this list.

Bonds needs to mentioned with any all time great team. With or without the roids he was one of the best.

When you think about catchers you may not think it now but the Molina brothers are up there among the best.

When putting together a complete team, you have to consider defense and defensively Ozzie Smith has no equal at his position. If it was all about offensive stats only, Jeter still wouldn't get the nod at SS, you'd have to give it to Honus Wagner and A-Rod before Jeter.

For the same reasons regarding putting a complete team on the field, I'd have to find a way to get Rickey Henderson on my squad leading off.

Offense trumps defense. Smith was way too weak offensively (though he did improve considerably) to make anything but an all-time all-FIELDING team.

There's no room for Henderson in an all-time outfield already filled with the greatest players in history. Pinch-runner, maybe.

Offense trumps defense? OK, we'll explain that to teams that won World Series without having the most potent offenses....

I'm not questioning Smith's ability to make a play at his position. But an all-star has to deliver both on the field and in the batters box. If I'm pitching the 267 don't concern me the way a 317 would. Plus Jeter has a history of delivering in the biggest games.

Very few, if any, have. Don't confuse defense with pitching.

Bottom line is that an individual player's offense has a far greater impact on the outcome of games day-by-day than his defense does. Carrying a solely defensive player is a luxury that only otherwise solid offensive teams can afford.

Outside of your 2b, ss, outfield, and pitching staff I think that's a pretty good team you got there.

who would you pick over Gibson? He had the best era for a year in baseball history and he wasn't afraid of anyone he faced on the mound.

Actually, Pedro Martinez in 2000 (at the height of the offensive era) had arguably the best pitching year of all time. His ERA was over 3.0 runs lower than the league average, and he set the record for the lowest Batting Average Against (.167).

Gibson's amazing year in 1968 came at a time when ALL pitching was ridiculous. (Gibson's record setting ERA was just 1.87 runs lower than the average.) They changed the rules the next year to give hitters a shot. The years 1963-1968 were insane for pitchers.

Exactly the point, this team ALREADY has a ton of offensive weapons in the lineup so if you can have the "luxury" of a defensive wizard (no pun intended) then you should by all means have one. Defense SAVES runs and hits that your offensive juggernaut might not be able to save -especially up the middle.

Pedro and Walter Johnson I'm taking over Gibson, even though Johnson played in the whites-only era.

And Pedro in 2000 >>>> Gibson in 1968.

Then you're not really choosing the best players at their positions, but rather players you wanna mix and match for one game?
