This is a topic I first got introduced to back in middle school, (bout the middle 90's), and I have been to seminars, conferences, talks, papers...I've seen the pictures, I watched the docu's, I've read the reports...I can't bring myself to watch the vid.


I don't care if this is some religious or cultural thing. What I don't understand is why you think such a thing can stop your girls from turning into 'whores'. You want a subservient woman, (in some cases), but you take away one of the most important things that she is suppose to be subservient in. Failed logic.

Why can't you do like other, rational people and teach your girls how to behave then things like this shouldn't be needed. I mean you teach them how to be good wives, how to cook, how to clean, you teach girls how to be women, take care of the children and in some cases (gasp) stand on their own two feet. Teach them not to be a corner ho!

The fact that such would try to marry the thought of submissive and fear together is so dangerous. I want you to be submissive and you know I will want this, but in order to make you submissive I will make you not want this. That does not make a woman stay once she is married; the thought of child birth must be horrid after having such a procedure...*sigh.

Mel, there is no failed logic. Its more about the lack of forward thinking. For these people are still carrying out traditional practices of generations past. They don't know any better for them its a traditional ritual. Their parents and grandparents and great grandparents did it so they do it, they don't ask why.

What's worse is they're not using sanitized instruments. So for some I'm sure they suffer greatly with infections and I'm sure some die.

No one so far has reached these people to educate them of why such a practice is wrong. Its their belief they don't even know why they do it.

You speak of "rational" people. Since this is what they or all they know this is their rationale. People can only do what they are taught. A child can't tie their shoes until you teach them, yet they watch you do it 1,000 times. Only educating these people will change them. An then the change will never be accepted by all. The hard core traditionalist will fight change to the end. You never get every grain of sugar from a bag.

Also understand fear is a controlling mechanism. If I can instill fear in your mind I can control you and make you do whatever I want. So when you combine submissiveness and fear together you pretty much have total control over that person or people.

I mean think realistically - If you can't progress your thinking there is no evolution, no progress with yourself, your home, your community, your world. To think that you can become a man or perform this rite for girls to become virtuous women (or rather to stay that way) it is not progression, not moving forward - it's a failed logic to see such a thing continuing to work.

They do die. If it is from an infection it is from extreme pain. If memory serves me correct what ever they use to stitch is not sanitized either in some cases so even the option just to remove the binding is out the window. I'm not sure which is worse the procedure or how it's done.

People have tried to teach them that it's wrong, I know Amnesty Intl has tried to help some women who were fleeing so they wouldn't have to get it done. Like I said I first found out about this about fifteen years ago so it's not new new; someone is talking but as usual those stuck in a routine will not listen.

Just doing what you know...I can speak on first hand experience that that trait can get you left behind in life real quick. And it's sad. You say education is key but not everyone want to be educated. But common sense tells us not to hurt our children, to protect them. If you as a parent or close family member can't see the pain this causes, (especially as a woman that has had it done), that to me is totally irrational behavior NOT to protect the one's you love.

I understand the thing about fear controlling a person. I do it with my children when they don't do as I ask. But that is a consequence to not obeying. These girls do nothing wrong other than being born female. It goes back to people being irrational as I said above. Besides why would I want to install fear into a person without teaching them why they should be fearful? Nipping something in the bud without explaining what is crawling up the stem is not nipping.


But I guess it's a generational / cultural thing that I think this way. I just pray that these girls either find their way out or explain some kind of compromise, something. Cause it's sad.

Mel, like I said before you never get every grain of sugar from the bag. As far as I know this practice is not widespread anymore. I believe those who still engage in this practice are those who have no logic. They do it because others before them did the same. It is both cultural and generational.

Stop looking for logic there is no logic. Its like those who worshiped the sun and trembled in fear when they witnessed an eclipse. They have no reason why other than their superstitious beliefs.

I'm torn on this topic in a lot of ways. I've seen it done before. And the experience is ... it gave me nightmares. I'm torn because to ME i can't believe that this is RIGHT. But then i also have a deep belief in interfering with other peoples cultural beliefs. That's something i deplore as much as what they themselves are doing.

So while i want it stopped. I don't feel as if it's anyone else's right to stop it.
