Music Debate: What is the BIGGEST HIP HOP RECORD OF ALL TIME? (Jazzy Jeff Approved)

Is Jazzy Jeff right? Is Fresh Prince of Bel-Air the biggest hip hop record in the world? Everyone and I mean everyone knows the lyrics. You could walk to the mall and start it off and people would start singing it with you

How many other rap songs can any and everyone Sing the lyrics because they know them all?

I believe actually as of this moment?

It is

It's the generational thing

My kids KNOW what You can't touch this and Rappers Delight are and many of the words.

But those songs?

Ain't THAT song.

It's like the damn pledge of allegiance.

My grandma, my mom, my kids and they kids know it word for word.

Forget even just hip hop

Not many pop songs PERIOD cross that many generations.

To me there is no biggest HIP HOP album. RUN DMC! Ultra Magnetic MC's, WUTANG CLAN catalogue, Notorious BIG catalogue, Jay Z catalogue, Death Row catalogue, 2 Live Crew Me So Horny album, Nas catalogue, Mobb Deep catalogue, Tribe Called Quest catalogue. It's been an adventure of epic proportions.

Can't say biggest ever but

Bombs Over Baghdad and

Hey Ya! Were immensely popular and well known worldwide.

Also In the Club (50 cent)
Everyone knows Fresh Prince of Bel-Air all around the world word for word by all generations.

I agree that it is the biggest most known hip hop song ever.

Some folks in here talking lyrics, I'm talking about the music/beats...not whether someone can recite the lyrics.

If we talking lyrics there's 80 year old jewish grandmas who can recite certain tap songs verbatim.

"With so much drama in the LBC it's kinda hard being snoop D O double G but I...

Somehow someway keep coming up with funky ass shit like every single day..."

BUT IT AINT FROM 8 TO 80TRUE

but it aint from 8 to 80

AND IN every known CONUTRY.

That is just different level.

You offer a good argument. A friend of mine once told me that a talk show host once said: "Do you know when you are popular? When my mother knows who you are."

Ideally, in entertainment, you are trying to market a product that transcends gender, age, race, etc.

I'll use "Tiger Woods" or the "Williams sisters" as an example. When they were playing at a highly competitive level, people that normally would not watch golf or tennis would tune in. If "Tiger Woods" didn't make the cut or "Venus or Serena" lose in an early round ratings would drop.

Now, if you have a song that catches the attention of grandma as well as preschool children that's quite a feat.

I'm not arguing. This is all opinion based. There are a few hip hop songs I consider perfect but that's a different thread.

For this thread it depends how you want to define "biggest".

Most popular? Well known/broad reach? Sales? Awards? Lyrics or musical theory, or both?

EXACTLY

Old Town Road? Was everywhere a huge hit kids sang it for years it will always be a odd pop rap country song FOREVER but...

Won't be here a generation from now above a NOVELTY

the Fresh Prince is a FAMILY FREINDLY thing that has passed down...

and its JOYFUL.

Depends on your age.

He has a point that the Fresh Prince theme song is up there. That’s cause of the show.

Off the top of my head:

Hypnotize
Juicy
Nuthin But a G Thang
Gin and Juice
Crossroads
Back That Azz Up
Paid In Full
Hot In Herre
In Da Club
God’s Plan

The thing Jazzy was right about is

Does your gramma mom sister wife and kid TOGETHER know ALL the words to any of those songs?

Baby Got Back.

Ain’t a person alive for the past 5 generations that don’t know that song.
