Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover are set to star in a remake of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” the 2005 movie starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
The project with New Regency and Amazon Studios with collaboration from writer Francesca Sloane will hit Amazon Prime Video in 2022, according to Glover.

The project was announced on Instagram — in pandemic fashion, quite literally. Waller-Bridge, 35, wore pajamas to film herself striking a pose in a doorway — the same leg lift Jolie, 45, did for the film’s movie poster and promotional materials. Glover, 37, filmed a bit of himself flossing — the dance, not the dental routine — to celebrate.

The videos, which originated in Glover’s Instagram Stories, were also reposted by Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios.
“Mr + Mrs Smith. Donald Glover x Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Co-created with Francesca Sloane. New Regency + Amazon Studios,” Glover wrote. “Amazon Prime Video 2022.”



This marks the second time Glover, whose musical stage name is Childish Gambino, and Waller-Bridge will star in a film together. The duo previously co-starred in 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” with Glover as a young Lando Calrissian and Waller-Bridge as the voice of L3-37.


“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” starring Jolie and Pitt, which saw the real-life couple, who met and fell in love on set, as secret assassins from competing agencies unknowingly out to get one another, was a box office smash making nearly $500 million worldwide. Pitt and Jolie filed for divorce in 2016.

Turns out the Hollywood industry is just as obsessed with Fleabag as the rest of us.

Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge continues to her domination of the entertainment space by landing a leading role in the untitled Indiana Jones 5 opposite Harrison Ford, Disney and Lucasfilm announced on Friday.

Details on Waller-Bridge's role remain under wraps, but this is the first major casting for the film beyond Ford's return as the titular adventuring archaeologist. It also means that the project, after numerous delays, is now getting much closer to filming.

The big Disney investors day presentation last year confirmed Indiana Jones 5 is now scheduled for theaters on July 29, 2022.

Waller-Bridge previously featured in Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story, the prequel movie about a young version of Ford's classic Star Wars character Han Solo, as the droid L3-37. In addition to now working with Ford, Waller-Bridge is also planning a reunion with her costar on Solo, Donald Glover, for a Mr. & Mrs. Smith Amazon series.

Lucasfilm also confirmed that John Williams, the iconic film composer of the Indiana Jones franchise, will return to score the fifth installment, directed by Logan's James Mangold.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Indiana Jones franchise director Steven Spielberg, franchise producer Frank Marshall, and Solo and Rogue One producer Simon Emanuel are on board as producers.

"I'm thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers," Mangold said in a statement. "Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine. When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can't help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself."

Waller-Bridge was set to co-create and star in the series opposite Donald Glover, as the Mrs. Smith to his Mr., presumably. The exit was reportedly due to creative differences between Glover and Waller-Bridge, who previously co-starred in Solo together. Glover is still attached to the project as co-creator, executive producer, and star, with Atlanta’s Francesca Sloane signed on as co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the series. Amazon has not yet released a statement regarding Waller-Bridge’s exit. At least we’ll always have the pair’s #SilhouetteChallenge parody announcement.

"It had been announced in February 2021 that Prime Video had ordered a Mr. and Mrs. Smith reboot, this time around as a series. The original 2005 film followed Brad Pitt’s and Angelina Jolie’s married couple, who while playing the perfect couple were both highly skilled assassins hiding their identities from one another. After botching an assignment from their various organizations, they are assigned new targets - each other. The reboot is set to have Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the lead roles and the pair star in the first look images for the series.

Two of the images show the pair as an everyday couple. The first image has the couple standing side by side in an elevator, while the second shot of the couple sees them together on a park bench while enjoying a bite. There is a tension to the first image that given what we know of the original film, and could mean that the pair have just realized that they are one another's target. The other two images are solo shots of the characters, and they are reminiscent of the iconic style of the original players which featured - the charm of Mr. Smith and the deadly elegance of Mrs. Smith.

The 2005 film was directed by Doug Liman based on a script by Simon Kinberg, and while the film was a box office success, other challenges abound for the stars. Amazon’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith will have series' star Glover co-creating alongside writer Francesca Sloane. The pair had collaborated on FX's Atlanta in the past. Both are also executive producers on the series with Sloane serving as showrunner. The Amazon production has Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano joining the cast. Wrapping up the call sheet are Parker Posey and Wagner Moura.

Creative Differences

When the project was first announced by Amazon, Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge had been billed to co-create and star on the series. However, in September 2021, Waller-Bridge exited the series citing creative differences with Glover as the reason for the decision. Her decision to step down paved way for Erskine to be cast in April 2022. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair (via The Hollywood Reporter), Waller-Bridge opened up about the decision to leave the series. “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it,” the writer-actress said. “And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.”
