Joss Whedon Confirms He’s ‘Done’ With Marvel

During a Q&A with the Oxford Union, the man himself explained that he won’t be helping out with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

“No,” he said. “You know I was their sort of Consigliere for a while… we do not discuss our thing… [audience laughter] But, I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase, but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron…”

sort of know when it was done I was just going to stop.”

Of course, Joss Whedon was instrumental in creating the MCU that we know and love – after all, he directed their first ensemble piece, ‘Avengers Assemble’ as well as providing creative input across Marvel’s Phase Two slate.

After all, the movies had to tie in with what Whedon had planned.

But now his final Marvel movie is behind him, it looks as though the 51-year-old filmmaker and geek won’t be tempted to return… for the time being.

“I made a completely clean break,” he explained, “not because we had a falling out - just because I was like, ‘I can’t…’ If I was still there going, ‘Well, here are my thoughts on this film,’ I’d be there every day.”

Although that sounds like a rather attractive prospect, it’s also understandable that Whedon would want to stretch himself a little… and perhaps its admirable that he wants to continue doing other things.

“I wouldn’t do anything else because there are a lot of films,” he said, “and it is a lot of fun. It’s very seductive. When you can put your little fairy dust on things and just improve them slightly, and they actually listen to you… I was a script doctor for a long time, and the part where they listen to you was very rare; so it was very important for my own self to go ‘we can still be friends,’ but…”

Of course, Whedon’s geek credentials made him a natural choice for the Marvel Cinematic Universe… and his influence will surely be missed by the fans.

But with the likes of James Gunn heading up ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ as well as Anthony and Joe Russo taking on ‘Captain America: Civil War’ as well as ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, it looks as though Joss Whedon has left Marvel’s Cinematic Universe in good hands.

This makes me sad... i have a sad face. Joss is my 2nd favorite white man. I don't trust anyone else with these movies....smh fuckin....SAD.

As long as Kevin Feige is the man making the final decisions that's all that matters.

Good. It seems like I'm the only one who really hated Ultron. That guy was exposed. He can't do summer blockbusters.
I didn't love it. That could've been a much powerful film! The fact that none of the main characters have been in peril is really sad. There was no meat on the bone. Nothing really to look at. I expected more!

ultron was avengers 1 so it didn't work as well for me. however i hate when people are lucky enough to be in a position to do something they're really good at and decide to just stop.
