how do you talk to your daughter about breaking up with a boy for the first time? specifically how do you deal with a situation where a boy that she's "in love with" has broken up with her. is this an area where you send her to talk to her father and if not what do you say to her?

how would you approach the situation if
-she did not want to talk to you about it (her best friend told you) vs if
-she came to you and wanted to talk to you about it (you being her mother that she talks to about things)

thanks.

**edit** i didnt intend to occlude the fathers from discussion. as always feel free to include your experience or point of view.

My 16-year old sister is living with me (not like a bad parent situation, just so she didn't have to change schools) and she had her first "major" breakup this summer. I dunno...she wasn't too sad about it.

I have a 16 year old and you just need to be straight with her . . . it may help if you share a similar experience . . . the most important thing is to get her comfortable enough to come to you in the future . . . maybe you guys can go out to dinner . . . or shopping . . . just the two of you and hang out . . . Be mom . . . but an open mom who she can trust to talk to and won't judge her . . . just let her open up and as much as you may want to tell her told you so or if you would have listened to me you wouldn't be in this position . . . just let her talk and the relationship will begin to become easier for you guys . . . my daughter and I have mother / daughter days . . . maybe the nail shop or window shopping . . . hair salon . . . just different little things like that
