Hip Hop artists and activists from around the country are calling for a nationwide school walk out this Monday, Oct. 1 to show support and solidarity for the Jena 6.

Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and M-1 of dead prez will be joined by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM), the National Hip Hop Political Convention, Change the Game, Sankofa Community Empowerment, and other organizations from more than 50 college campuses.

The walk out will take place at noon, Central Time.

Mos Def—an outspoken supporter of the Jena 6—is calling for students world wide to assist in the fight against the human rights violations and the unequal treatment the six teens face at the hands of the Louisiana criminal justice system.
In a statement released to the press, MXGM is calling for the following in addition to Monday's rally:

1. All charges against the Jena 6 be dropped
2. The immediate release of Mychal Bell
3. The United States Department of Justice to convene an immediate inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the arrests and prosecutions of the Jena 6;
4. Judge Mauffray to be recused from presiding over Bell's juvenile court hearings or other proceedings;
5. The Louisiana Office of Disciplinary Counsel to investigate Reed Walters for unethical and possibly illegal conduct;
6. The Louisiana Judiciary Commission investigate Judge Mauffray for unethical conduct; and
7. The Jena School District superintendent to be removed from office.

Individuals who are not students are encouraged to wear black.

Would anyone here do this? I'm afraid I see some folks using this as an excuse to skip classes.

I'm not going to lie back back in high school whether I agreed with it or not(I would) I would use this to skip school..

last walk out I saw in STL, the kids started fighting while the news choppers were above them. It was shameful how a few students ruined a righteous statement.

This walk out could go very bad, there are just to many knuckle heads who are going to see it as a free day.

I'd like to hope that kids will act decent, but I don't know. Good luck though.

Peace to Def & the MXGM

:hmm:

I guess I'm just happy that young folks are getting involved. The march woke up the consciousness in ALOT of high school/ college students. Mos Def looks like he's stepping his game up.

Yea, alot of students will just take it as a day off to stay in and play Halo though.

The last thing we need is Black school children, missing school; where all indicators point to the fact that most of them are already behind academically!

Ninjas need to learn to ACT STRATEGICALLY; rather than to ACT, just for the sake of "acting"!

You are really asking for it.........:hmm::hmm:

Some ways I agree with you but you stirring up the bee's nest with this one

INTELLIGENT DISSENT IS THE FOUNDATION OF ANY GREAT ORGANIZATION!

Otherwise; folks will just run off on tangents and anytime some emotional BS comes up; and at that point NO PROGRESS WILL BE REALIZED!

If Ninjas can't stand to hear that our BLACK CHILDREN (K-12) DON'T NEED TO SKIP SCHOOL; then that's THEIR PROBLEM!

I've never been a "go-along-to-get-along-kneegro"; just for the sake of being "liked"; I'm gonna ALWAYS keep it real, and I'm gonna ALWAYS write opinions that I think will BENEFIT BLACKS!

Question:

If All the Students in Detroit or DC or Atlanta; walk out of school; HOW DOES THIS HELP THE JENA 6?

How does it REALLY help them?

"Stirring up the bees nest"; C'mon, you're trying to sell me on a concept that even YOU don't believe in.

Mos Def needs to sit his crazy ass down before he starts influencing school kids with his wacko ideas.

If this does come to pass, some of the kids will embrace activism, some wont........ Quit generalizing that most of our kids cant take a day just to realize that they can make a difference in our society and actually move things physically. I think overall it would be a good idea. Who really cares about the ones who really dont learn from it. I will never say that activism doesnt help, esp. when I'm not activating myself. Some of you all speak out of just plain and raw emotion without really thinking about why things are. With this, You are guilty of that. Our future is so murky right now that I think it would be good for kids to involve themselves politically

BTW The Ones who don't learn from it probably arent learning much in school anyways

Lol we all know those kids need to be in school...I just say wear black or march after school or something, but they need to be in school yo

they need to be in school i agree but there are only a few times in a persons life when they can stand for a cause that galvinizes them and there peers to an idea and a movement. if they let this opportunity slide by then there may not be another chance to spark the ideas of revolution and change. one day of school wont make them a doctor or lawyer so i say take that day off and show the world you can be united for a right and just cause. its the planting of ideas that create change and if this is a spring board for the planting of ideas then one day is worth a lifetime of positive building.

This issue doesnt pertain to you

Unfortunately, it does. (I actually care more about black education and achievement than about phony "feel-good" marches or walk-outs in support of underachievers, who are NOT innocent or wrongly accused [like The Scottsboro Boys, et al.])

I wish I was still in school. (No, I'm really considering it :D)

But as long as we can come together as a collective unit for something positive, I'm all for it. The people of my generation (I'm 24) need to become proactive in keeping the ball rolling that our forefathers have passed on to us. Trust me, one missed class, test, or paper won't open any more doors for you in White America than if you were to attend class.

The Mis-EDUCATION of the Negro continues.

I would think taking a day off work would resonate more because its business impacting. Risky, but people would take notice.

You may be on to something...

I'd definitely be down for the cause. We need to own and support more of our own anyways. Too many people will be worried about "clocking in" for their corporation who does nothing for them outside of underpaying them for their labor. :rolleyes:

This may or may not be the solution...but believe me..if any more changes occur in the favor of the Jena 6...this will be the catalyst for more cases of injustice to come to the light! I hope....

i agree a walkout is not the answer. young people need to be in school. this needs to be done at another time. i never saw the point of missing out your schooling to prove a point...

I Would. I remember we did it during the LA RIOTS. It wont effect your future and it will be a day you will never forget.

my point exactly J Storm. it would give them a deeper connection to there own identities and cultural struggles.
