RELATED: Mortal Kombat Reboot To Begin Shooting This Year

The film, which will be directed by Simon McQuoid in his debut on a script from Greg Russo, will head to the down under country of Australia, Wan’s homeland, to begin shooting sometime towards the end of the year.

“I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” Wan said in a statement. “Now we get to experience South Australia with its scenic locations and a wealth of artistic talent to work with. It will be perfectly suited for this fantasy-action project.”

“The key here is to try and do it right,” Wan previously said about the film. “I don’t want to rush into it. So right now, we’re just trying to take our time to make sure it’s heading in the right direction. I think that’s more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes. I love the characters. I think they’re such colorful characters. It’s such an amazing take on, basically, Enter the Dragon. It’s that fantasy version, the video game version, of Enter the Dragon.”

The first video game was developed by Midway Games and released in 1992. The storyline sees a diverse range of fighters hailing from eighteen different realms become pitted against one another in an epic tournament. Quite a few sequels followed the original game with the most recent, Mortal Kombat 11, being released last month.

Two Mortal Kombat movies have already been released. The first, simply titled Mortal Kombat, was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and saw release in 1995. It was followed two years later with a sequel, Annihilation, which also paved the way for two television series: the animated Defenders of the Realm and the live-action Konquest. Two web series have been released based on the property as well from director Kevin Tancharoen.

The new Mortal Kombat movie will follow a male protagonist who becomes drawn into the interdimensional tournament, and who begins to realize his true potential as a result of the experience.

The film, which is set to hit theaters on March 5, 2021, will go head-to-head with Sony’s upcoming film adaptation of the classic Mattel toy and cartoon franchise Masters of the Universe, an untitled Universal Pictures Event Film and Fox’s family animated adventure Nimona.

When the characters of Mortal Kombat take over the big screen in early 2021, they will look exactly how they should. On social media, the producer of Mortal Kombat confirmed the live-action reboot film will have an appropriately diverse cast that adheres to the established canon of the video game franchise, but he also raised a big new question about the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie.

WHAT HAPPENED? — On Thursday, film producer Todd Garner tweeted at a fan praising the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot for its casting. The fan, @KeelahMonster, noted that the movie "will have actual Asian actors as the Asian characters" and that they're "really impressed that they seem to have actually bothered to care about nationality too, at least for Scorpion."

This prompted Garner to reply, "We made sure every nationality was correct."

Another tweet from a fan asking about when the trailer for the movie will premiere, to which Garner teased an autumn release. "Probably Fall," said Garner.

WHY THIS MATTERS — The Mortal Kombat series has visibly been one of the most ethnically diverse video games. Like other fighting franchises Street Fighter, Tekken, and Dead or Alive, Mortal Kombat has heavily featured Asian characters alongside black, white, brown, and yes, non-human characters. In its return to the big screen, it's important the movie adheres to the diversity seen in the games, simply because anyone who isn't Japanese playing Scorpion doesn't sit right.

For the 2021 movie, Japanese film icon Hiroyuki Sanada will play Scorpion, with Joe Taslim (The Raid: Redemption) playing his ice-cold rival, Sub-Zero.

This matters because the cult classic 1995 movie Mortal Kombat, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, had some difficulties putting Asian and minority characters at the center of the movie. In a 2015 oral history by The Hollywood Reporter, actor Robin Shou revealed he had an unusual seven reads for producers because the investors were uncomfortable with an Asian actor leading an expensive Hollywood movie.

Shou explained:

"I read seven times. My agent friend had never heard of anyone who had to read seven times. I had to read for the producers, the director, the casting director, the line producer and then my final reading was with New Line. They were really hands-on as far as picking this Asian Liu Kang, because he's an Asian lead and they're investing millions. It was grueling."
French-American actor Christopher Lambert, who starred in the 1986 film Highlander, played Raiden, an elder thunder god who in the games wears a conical hat. Game co-creator Ed Boon said his team imagined Raiden originating from "Asian mythology" but accepted Lambert's casting:

"We never showed his face that clearly in the game, so we never really defined a race," Boon said, "but we didn't think 'the Highlander guy.' That wasn't in our heads."

For the 2021 reboot, Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano (Thor) will play Raiden.

THE INVERSE ANALYSIS — Even if it's just to please fans who know and love the characters of Mortal Kombat, it's a big deal that the 2021 reboot will feature an appropriately diverse cast who closely resembles these familiar fighters.

The only mystery thus far has been Johnny Cage, a character whose actor hasn't been announced. The movie star turned Earthrealm freedom fighter will appear in the movie, confirmed by writer Greg Russo on Twitter who said in a November 2019 tweet: "Big plans for J.C. Can't say much more than that."

At the same time, British-Singaporean actor Lewis Tan (Into the Badlands) has a role in Mortal Kombat, and his character hasn't been revealed. Is Lewis Tan playing Johnny Cage? Tan has the look and charisma for a hotshot like Johnny Cage, but Tan's British background is just a little at odds with Johnny Cage's very American origins.

That said, it is Hollywood. In a movie about elder gods and mystical ninjas ripping out spines, there's no reason there can't be a little make-believe.

MORTAL KOMBAT WILL BE RELEASED IN THEATERS ON JANUARY 15, 2021.

I hope they don't start off from where they left it,revamp it from the start and don't fuck it up like they did the x-men.

Raidenis a god, respect him as such and don't kill him off.

Following a tease yesterday from actor Lewis Tan, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first images from the live-action Mortal Kombat film reboot! While the images themselves are pretty exciting, they still leave a lot of mystery of what's to come, so fans worried about spoilers can check them out without worry. For longtime fans of the franchise, this should be pretty exciting! Prior to the release of these images, Tan's role in the film had remained undisclosed, but ComicBook can now confirm that the actor will play Cole Young in the film.

With a few months left until the film's release, very few details have been revealed about Mortal Kombat. Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan and Todd Garner, the film will star Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), and Chin Han (Shang Tsung). Unlike previous films based on the video game franchise, this one will receive an 'R' rating, potentially allowing it to cut loose in a way that previous Mortal Kombat movies have not. For the first time, fans will truly get to see fatalities represented on the big screen!

It will be interesting to see the reaction to the film when it releases. More than 25 years after its debut, the 1995 Mortal Kombat film still holds a special place in the hearts of a lot of franchise fans. Mortal Kombat 11 developer NetherRealm Studios has embraced that fact, releasing a number of skins based on the film last year, as well as bringing back some of the actors to reprise their roles. Whether or not this year's film reboot will be able to earn itself a similarly passionate following remains to be seen!

Like many of Warner Bros. Pictures other 2021 releases, Mortal Kombat will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. Theater goers and subscribers will have the opportunity to check out the film on April 16th. In the meantime, you can check out all of our previous coverage of the Mortal Kombat reboot right here.

It looks like it's going to make... the one fatal error and that's trying to do all the Characters at once.

Agreed. It looks like they're going to be introducing a lot of characters while also trying to tell a overarching story.

That's not going to be easy. Some characters are going to be completely undeveloped.

With that said action wise this looks like it can be a winner. Just what they've shown in the trailer looks entertaining.

the dude playing sub zero is the cop that got killed by mad dog in raid redemption, scorpion is played by 1 of the swordsman in the last samurai... like I said bring them nigs in have an ok story lots of martial arts , killings, a lil special effects and they can ride this wave for several sequels.. so far I’m in

Whoa.. this looks way better than I thought it would be. Then again. I'm not expecting a great, just something entertaining

only weird thing as a MK fan is that Mileena doesn't look half tarkatan

but everything else looks dope
