Eighty-four people are known to have died from the heatwave that has struck Spain, the Carlos III Health Institute, which reports to the Spanish Health Ministry, said.

All the deaths, which were reported on July 10-12, could be attributed to the scorching heat exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in large parts of the country. Temperatures even rose above 45 degrees Celsius in the south and southwest of the country.

The heatwave is predicted to continue into next week, and the death toll is feared to rise, Xinhua news agency reported.

This is the second major heat wave of the year in Spain. The first one lasted from June 11 until June 20 and claimed the lives of 829 people nationwide, the Health Ministry added on Friday. Back then, temperatures peaked at 44.5 degrees Celsius.

The authorities recommend that people drink plenty of water, refrain from excessive exercise and stay indoors as much as possible

They don’t have central air in a lot of European countries. A heatwave their can be brutal because it’s unusual.
^^^^^^^
Central air? Most don't even have an air conditioner. My sister-in-law is from Denmark.... they don't even put ice in their drinks.... whenever I go to NC over their house... she always thinks it's odd that I put drinks in the refrigerator so that the ice I put in them doesn't melt as fast and make the drink watery

We got places like that here. People in the northwest US and probably in the northeast are the same way. Earth changing on folks and new norms will have to happen.

Remember what happened in Canada last year yeah some of these people are getting a huge wake up call about the changing climate

45 degrees Celsius is nuts.
Al gore and other scientist said this was going to happen people (CACs) was hardheaded now it’s happening and some people are starting to worry should have been worrying in the late 90s. And the other problem anything about this when Al Gore spoke about this he said he supposed to happen in 100 years we are nowhere near 100 years and it’s happening now

At work they sent out a 2nd information package re: Extreme Heat Management Guide. The previous info was re: Heat Exhaustion.

They aren't playing around after the heat dome fucked shit up last year. Hundreds of people died locally (including 2 people I knew).

The weather has been pretty agreeable locally. Some warmer days previously, but of late it's standard weather. Humid, but not hot.

We were in Zihuatanejo, MX in December 2019 and it would be 110 - 112 degrees (43 - 44 celcius) mid- to late-morning.

Just sitting there in the shade, conserving energy & staying hydrated. Tired - just because. We had the thermometer out in the direct heat on the deck and would occasionally check it.

Fortunately it was an older airbnb with a big covered deck ... great ocean view (about 3 mins away on foot).

I remember being a kid and asking my grandpa how to calculate temps. In Canada, we go by celcius. His quick tip to convert it to fahrenheit was along the lines of "Double the celcius, and add about 22 - 26 to it ... so if we're 30 celcius, you're looking at the equivalent of 82 - 86 fahrenheit ..."

The entire fuckin world uses the metric system except the United damn States of America. It so dumb.

Makes it worse when you learning science and have to convert EVERYTHING over.

It truly not necessary. We should all just stick to the metric system. People would lose their mind here if they saw gas go from gallons to liters. Most folks will think it’s cheaper

You used 40 instead of 45, that's why you got a different Fahrenheit number.
my bad i speed read most of the time just to get a general sense of what is goin on

We were roadtripping down to California in the fall of 2010 - about 20 hours to get down there. My dad asked us to let him know how the prices were at the pump. I was jotting things down and converting 'em over to liters afterward, lol.

Speaking of converting stuff ... took French Immersion throughout school. Definitely made some of those subjects challenging ... math, science, history / social studies.

We transferred from junior high to high school for our final 2 years, and suddenly had math in English. I remember sitting there in class and NOT recognizing a number of the words and terms, as they were quite a bit different after 10 years of reading things out in French. Started panicking there in class and didn't want to raise my hand in class asking dumb questions. Only knew about 4 - 5 other kids in there, the rest were strangers ...

Social studies was ALOT of memorizing names, dates, wars. Couldn't process alot of the information as you're reading so much and always translating it for yourself back to English, but then writing it out in your own version of so-so French.

:roflmao3: :giggle:

You're welcome. I was just trying it out with a few examples on Google, and it was fairly accurate / ballpark. Found that helpful when I was growing up and would hear U.S. temperatures and convert 'em back to celcius here.
i tried it on 40 and 45c and it works well
let me try it in reverse
it's 87f where i'm at so that should be around 21c

welp that didn't work
