In a deal that many are expecting to be finalized by Thursday, "Sugar" Shane Mosley will likely be announced as the next opponent for eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao in an HBO pay-per-view televised clash on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

According to a source close to the fighters' negotiations. James Prince, the adviser of the 39-year-old Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs), and Top Rank Promotions CEO, Bob Arum, on behalf of the 32-year-old Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs), spoke on Monday toward the goal of finalizing a deal by as early as Thursday.

"We're talking to Bob Arum, but nothing is really happening as we speak right now. James Prince is kind of handling it. And then, when it gets down to the last particulars, then I'll step in and then we'll finalize it," said Mosley. "All of the fingers are pointing towards me getting the deal done and making the fight. It's not a done deal yet, like I said, but it's certainly looking like it's heading in that direction."

One of the items being discussed is the weight. There is a possibility, although most don't expect it, for Mosley to face Pacquiao at a catch-weight of 148-pounds, with the WBC's 154-pound title at stake. Pacquiao, who also holds the WBO's title at 147, captured the WBC's vacant title last month with a twelve round decision over Antonio Margarito, which took place at 150-pounds.

I really used to be one of the biggest proponents of Manny, but at this point, I pretty much view him as a joke. Hand picked opponents, at this point, the catchweight shit is getting out of hand. What is the excuse now? If his ass can't fight the bigger guys, then don't 'claim' to be moving up in weight to fight them. Sure 148 is one pound over the welterweight limit so theoretically it is a Super Welterweight fight, but to force his opponents to come in at a weight they choose... bullshit.

I really can't wait until this shit back fires on his ass, and someone really knocks his block head as the fuck out!!! And shaky ass Roach, while I respect him as a trainer, he is the main orchestrator of this bullshit... I really hope Shane finds the fountain of youth for one fight and beats the shit out of Manny!!!!

Is 148 even a catchweight? I mean shit, he might as well give up the title and fight at welter.

Yeah. He's a welterweight champion, why not just defend the title at 148?
As I've stated before, I'm against this fight from the jump but if they do it and it's for his junior middleweight/super welterweight title, Shane should be allowed to weigh-in up to 154.

That's my whole problem with Manny! If you can't bulk up to a certain weight, then that's your issue. Freddy is a master at manipulating shit and convincing the masses that he is taking challenges, but in reality, he is eliminating his disadvantages by draining his opponent. I haven't brought a Manny fight in the past three and I won't start with this one. I won't even waste my time watching on streams, Fuck both of those clowns... As much as I dislike the person Floyd is, I hope he can get his life together and fuck Manny up....

All the articles I'm seeing are saying the fight's going to be at 147lbs for Pac's WBO title. I can see bitching about Pac fighting an old and shot Mosley period but weight should be a moot point as Mosley has made both 154 and 147 in the year 2010 and seems fully capable of competing poorly at both weights. Weight probably isn't even a factor with Mosley as he looks shot at either weight at this point.

And with SHANE you just might get what you are wishing for..he is unpredictable..just when you think he's here for a fight he shows up and blows you OUT! i'm NOT gona sleep on Mosley in this fight.

Yup. Makes no sense at all. Oh well. At least there is the chance it could be a funny fight. Shane is going to get lit the fuck up.

It's actually an interesting fight but I would like to see Mosley extinguished by a vicious skull shattering knockout. This way he could be gone for good. I'd like to see all of the oldies (Mosley, Hopkins, Ruiz, HOlyfield, Jones, Jose Luis Castillo, etc) just get completely out of the picture so we can see new guys develop in peace. I see it as kind of a cleansing.

Arum: Marquez's Demands Offended Pacquiao, Killed Fight

By Lem Satterfield

According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, Shane Mosley breaking away from Golden Boy Promotions had nothing to do with the overall decision of selecting him as Manny Pacquiao next's opponent for May 7 at the MGM Grand. The promotional feud between Arum and Golden Boy has carried over to their working relationship. No event since Pacquiao's fight with Ricky Hatton in May of 2009, has been co-promoted by the two companies. There are several pending lawsuits between the two promotional firms that relate to Pacquiao.

There are many boxing insiders who believe Arum picked Mosley based on his "free agent" status, and overlooked Juan Manuel Marquez because of his promotional affiliation with Golden Boy.

The real reason Marquez was overlooked, according to Arum, was an unrealistic monetary demand to make the fight. Arum claims the promotional status of Marquez has nothing to do with Paacquiao's final decision because Golden Boy was willing to step aside and allow Top Rank to handle the entire promotion. In the end, the monetary demand by Marquez offended Pacquiao, says Arum. Besides the money, Arum felt Mosley was an easier opponent to sell to the public as a legit threat.

"As far as Marquez is concerned, Marquez, you know, he had those two fights with Manny Pacquiao going for him. The two prior fights [a draw and a disputed split-decision loss] with Manny Pacquiao. But one guy has become bigger from the standpoint, physically -- and that's Manny Pacquiao-- than the other guy. The other guy is a lightweight fighter, and Manny Pacquiao has grown into a welterweight," Arum said.

"We thought that when the dust cleared, that a third fight between them was going to be a relatively tough sell. Golden Boy, they agreed to step aside and to allow us to promote a third fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. They gave us the call on everything that we wanted. So that was not an obstacle."

"But what was an obstacle was that they had priced themselves so high, that it was something that Manny became offended about. They were asking for more than double the money that they made when Marquez fought and lost to Floyd Mayweather. I don't think that that was fair or that it was right, and Marquez, because of that, was a non-starter."

I am with will_right on this one...I have never been a fan of Manny since the minute he fought Morales that 2nd time when Erik lost to Raheem. Didn't give Zahir a shot, and then kept runnin from Marquez after that 2nd fight. I could care less about his supposed 8 division championships either when he barely defended the title in 3 of them...and then asked for catchweights in many of those fights...

Mosley can pull this off (even at 39) because of two things...Unlike Margachee-tos, this guy can come forward with power and doesn't mind going against a guy like Manny who CAN get hit. Plus, Shane's biggest troubles have been against defensive fighters (Floyd, Winky) and guys with reach (Forrest), which Manny doesn't quite have here in this fight.

If Manny thinks that he would be able to take shots from Shane and get away with it, he's got another thing coming. He could ask Cotto, Marg, and Floyd about that hook of Shane's...or better yet, ask Vargas

Good observation.

I'm not a fan of wanting boxers to get hurt. You want young guys to get more shine, tell them to keep winning and winning impressively and take the occassional dangerous (at least dangerous looking) fight. Tell their management to manage better. A mass sweeping out of the old heads won't make the young guys any more marketable. They need to be trying to get fights with those old guys like Pascal and Hopkins.

I've been saying the same shit. I think Shane is going to lose this fight, but if he wins, I won't be too surprised. Plus you forget what a strong beast Mosley is in the clinch, something that no one does to Manny. 5 years ago, this fight never happens because Freddie knows Mosley knocks his boy out cold. Oh and Happy Holidays to ya'll.:D

This seems like a no win situation for Pac. Larry Merchant recently stated that Mosley was probably the most dangerous selection for Pac when compared to Berto and Marquez. Many people agree with that notion if not most. It's an interesting situation because usually a fighter gets credit for taking on the most dangerous opponents but in this scenario Mosley is the most dangerous yet the most shot and undeserving at the same time. Actually, this might say more about the lack of general quality in the division and the true level of Marquez and Berto.

I know you niggas got a lot of hope in you, but it is really stemming from three things:

1) The memory of the great fighter Mosley was.

The reality is Shane hasn't looked against a great or even a good fighter in a long time.

I mean let's be real, Cotto isn't the defensive marvel that Floyd is or now what people are trying to make Mora out to be. Cotto isn't a blazing fast fighter either, but he beat Shane to the punch with footwork and angles. You can shit on Manny's traditional defense but the main thing he does is use footwork and offensive angles as his defense. You add blazin speed in the mix it is a recipe for disaster for Shane. Shane's only saving grace is his chin is still there, but even with that his only hope is that Manny says: "fuck it.... I'm not moving. Let's go shot for shot."

2) The dislike that is growing for the BS moves of Pac, Roach and (especially) Arum and...

As far as people's perception being altered out of dislike. We have all experienced it but don't get caught up in the hype. Many people have started to shit on these "opponents" that Manny has choosen and the catch weight shit. Even with this choice so-called experts have kept it real like they always do in the beginning, but now that the fight is set... You can see opinions shifting. Part of that is people want to look smart calling the long shot, but the other part of the game is that these nigga work for HBO, promotional companies, and so on...... IT IS THESE NIGGA'S JOB IS TO SELL THE FIGHT. The crazy part is that you can get caught up in the bullshit if you let biases shape your opinion.

3) The amazing feat that B-Hop pulled off.

The underdog/old head love has always been apart of this sport, but Shane has lost a step and there is only one B-Hop. If anything Shane could get lucky and pull off a George Foreman move but we all know Heavyweight power is on another level of fight changing potential... so I don't have my hopes up for that either.

I hear what you're saying, but my whole statement was based on style, not speed or anything else. You don't have to be a blazing fast fighter or even in your prime to beat Pacman, Morales proved that. Not that he was ever slow but he was def past his prime when he beat Pac. I'm just saying that Mosley has a better chance than people are giving him. This will not be a massacre. Pac is not exactly a boxing genius. And Cotto was in his prime and fought a much better fight than anyone gives him credit for. I still think it's a mistake to judge Shane based on his last 2 performances. Like I said, I think he's going to lose, but it wouldn't really surprise the hell out of me if he took Pac with one last great performance. Let's put it this way, if Manny stays in there and bangs, he'll be playing into shane's hands, and Manny has a weak defense, Clottey hit him whenever he threw and even Margarito hurt him, he's very hittable. Shane has the type of explosive power that can put you on your back at any moment, he even had Floyd fucked up for a few seconds. It's just he'll have to fight a perfect fight, and I doubt he has that in him at this point. But styles always make fights and shanes rough inside fighting will give Pac all he can handle especially if Pac gets on his macho shit and decides to stand and trade to prove something like he did with Cotto and Margarito. Also what happened with B-Hop has no influence on my prediction whatsoever. A young Hop would have torn through Pascal. Pascal is not anywhere near elite and he gave Hop problems the first 3 rounds. Imagine what would have happened in that fight had Hopkins been facing Dawson or Bute. It wouldn't have been pretty. Not taking anything away from Bernard, that shit was remarkable for a guy his age but Pascal is nowhere near Pacman's level of fighter. As a matter of fact I've been meaning to say something - fuck Jean Pascal, that bitchass mufucca ain't giving B-Hop no rematch.:smh:

Regardless of all the hate. The more I think about it, the more interesting the fight with Mosley is. However, most pick Mosley to last 12 but I don't. I think Mosley loads up too much and Pac will make him miss and pay badly. Yes, sometimes Pac stands still against the ropes with hands held high but Mosley is taking a while to get set before hitting that heavy bag. By the time Mosley gets set, I think he'll get big left hands to the grill. This will be extremely exciting for the fans as these guys will be in close quarters dropping haymakers with crazy speed and power.

However, Mosley is still fast but his timing is not hair trigger anymore. He seems incapable of throwing combinations of more than two punches at a time without having to set up and needing the other opponent be cooperative by staying still.

Regarding defense, Pac is so offensive that I think his little defensive moves are underrated much like Duran. I can't think of any offensive specialist that was unhittable except maybe Roy Jones. I happen to think Pac gets hit because he is just constantly on the offensive. Didn't he throw like 1,000 punches against Margarito? Shit, you throw like that and you're bound to get hit often even if you're Willie Pep and Pernell Whitaker combined. Mayweather would also get hit more if he became more offensive and threw more punches per round.

Bhop is a master matchmaker for himself. He simply knows how to pick em and he usually doesn't fuck around and end up fighting someone that he can't beat. He also knows how to work this whole "I'm an old man" thing. He got tremendous credit for beating Pavlik and Wright in those infamous catchweight fights even though those guys were fighting well past their best weights. In spite of that, Hops knew how to spin it based on the whole old age thing and came out a winner legacy-wise.

I don't know what he saw in Calzaghe to make him think he would win. Just on punch output alone, Calzaghe had to be a problem for Hops.

I hear what you're saying, but my whole statement was based on style, not speed or anything else.

I wasn't necessary talking about you. It was more of a blanket statement.

You don't have to be a blazing fast fighter or even in your prime to beat Pacman, Morales proved that. Not that he was ever slow but he was def past his prime when he beat Pac.

I agree, but Shane will have to either out brawl Manny or out box Manny. The question is can Shane pull the trigger to out brawl Manny and in reaction will Manny's movement make the difference. I think Manny's style will dominate the fight in that case. Out boxing Manny is probably the way to go, but that isn't Shane's style.

I'm not convince that it won't be a massacre. The only way it won't be is if Shane hurts Manny early. I brought up Cotto for a reason, because Shane had no game plan for a guy that wasn't going to just stand in front of him and bang. Really, his last great performance was against Margarito and Margs only knows to stand in front of a guy.

Shane has the type of explosive power that can put you on your back at any moment, he even had Floyd fucked up for a few seconds.

I agree, but I brought up Foreman for a reason cause even with the shot Shane landed on Floyd... Floyd wasn't taking off his feet and he head wasn't fucked up enough were his instincts didn't kick in. I say that because even if Shane hurts Manny, Shane might have to follow it up and then the question is can he do it.

If you notice Pac's macho shit only comes out when he knows he has a fighter hurt, or when he thinks a fighter can't/won't land punches. Pac showed Cotto a lot of respect until he started backing Cotto up. Clottey wasn't punching and Manny tried to punch through his defense when he thought he wasn't going to get hit. Margarito was just to slow and I think Manny might have punch himself out a little... that's why just took shots from Margs. I think Pac will show Shane the same respect he gave Cotto in those first couple of rounds.

Are you shocked by Pascal's move?

The problem with this fightis simply that it isnt against pbf. Manny really is limited in his opponents. No fighter at 140 and 147 can beat him. People claimthey want to see him face a 135 pounder, lol. He is in a tough spot. His last three fight he has been outweighed by his opponent. Shane is a name and we will see what happens in may. Maybe pbf will get out of jail, find jesus, and face manny.

I'm with merce77 on this one..

Furthermore,

I'm sorry, but...

I don't know what the rest of y'all are smokin, cause this is gonna be an AMAZINGLY GREAT fight! I've actually been hopin for this fight to materialize for years. Even with a lil age on him, Shane still will make this into one for the ages, mark my words.

I know errbody been waitin for Pac-Mayweather, and rightfully so, but I'm a fight fan who really loves a FIGHT, and that's exactly what we're gonna see on May 7. Say what you want about Shane (he's over the hill, loads up on punches, has problems with angles, etc.), but Pac is exactly the type of fighter that brings out the best in him.

If you think back in history, you'll notice that Shane built his entire career off of beating good offensive fighters (DLH, Vargas, Mayorga, Margarito), but he always struggled against defensive fighters (Forrest, Winky, Floyd). His weakness has been the same the whole time: he's too obsessed with the KO, so he always headhunts. While this characteristic may have made him a lotta money, it seriously limited him as a fighter.

Well, folks, what we have now in Pacquiao is the type of fighter who makes Shane drool: one who loves to bang as much as he does. Sure, Pacman can switch to boxing when his opponent makes him, but that's not even gonna come CLOSE to happening this time. These two dudes are gonna throw hands, and Roach is gonna be absolutely pissed! That's what people aren't understanding. Neither of these guys can turn down a brawl. They are gonna get at each other on a level so vicious that each of you, for the rest of your lives, will remember exactly where you were when you saw it happen. Believe me, the real winner in this is gonna be all of us.

I have no clue why anybody wouldn't want to see this as bad as I do. This has fight-of-the-year written all over it!

It's interesting that you mention Mayorga and Margarito. Mayorga is just as offensive as Margarito but he's just faster and has more foot movement than Margarito. Just that movement alone was enough to throw Mosley off and he was not spectacular at all in that fight until the last 10 seconds or whenever when he finally got the KO. In light of that, Pac's southpaw stance combined with the movement and his punch output from a variety of angles will cause Mosley to receive more punches than he ever has and he'll probably get stopped. However, I agree that it will be exciting because Mosley's has those exciting punches and still has speed and a good chin. The exchanges are going to be fierce but I'd bet on the younger fresher guy. Pac does what younger guys are supposed to do to older fighters, he beats the hell out of them. Pascal needs to be ashamed of himself.

That;s interesting. I see Pac walking straight ahead and getting knocked the fuck out JUST LIKE FLOYD almost did. New guys? Please...these new negroes don't WANT to fight anyone and frankly the public is a bigger pussy then they are....instead of demanding challenging fights like Paul Williams, etc. negroes spend YEARS begging for Floyd to fight Manny and paid absolutely no attention while FLoyd fought little people and Manny fought everyone else....Young negroes need a break? Start by whippin' all the old folks asses versus duckin' them.

The biggest problem that I see for Shane is that he could be thrown off by Pac's speed coming from his left. However, if Shane is able to take his punch (he has a better chin than Cotto and Marg) then Pac is in big trouble. Manny will have to get at Shane through different angles and come out...That would make Shane have to reset his stance in close quarters...

I still think too many people are buying too much into Shane's past two fights. Not only that, he was on hiatus for over a year before his fight against Floyd, and you saw how he was able to start that fight...I think that if he is able to smother Pac he will be successful...and also be able to get in some body shots (which many of Manny's opponents haven't constantly done)...

That is the realest shit. I don't know why more fighters don't attack his body. I wish Shane wasn't such a head hunter.
