LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A Missouri mom was indicted Thursday for her alleged role in the death of a teen who killed herself over a failed Internet romance that turned out to be a hoax.

A federal indictment accuses Lori Drew, 49, of O'Fallon, Missouri, of using the social networking Web site MySpace.com to pose as a 16-year-old boy and feign romantic interest in the girl.

The girl, Megan Meier, committed suicide after her online love interest spurned her, according to prosecutors, telling her the world would be a better place without her.

Drew faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of conspiracy and accessing protected computers to obtain information to inflict emotional distress.
The indictment, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, accuses Drew and others of registering on MySpace as "Josh Evans" and using the account to lure Meier into an an online romance.

Authorities have previously said that Drew set up the account to find out what Meier, who lived in her neighborhood, was saying about her daughter.
Prosecutors allege that Drew and the others violated MySpace's terms of service by using false information to create the account so they could "harass, abuse or harm" Meier, according to the indictment.

The two corresponded for about four weeks before "Josh" broke off the relationship, authorities said. Within an hour, Meier hanged herself in her room and died the next day.

The indictment does not allege that Drew sent the final message telling Meier the world would be a better place without her. Instead, it blames her unnamed co-conspirators, who authorities have previously said include a teenage girl.

After Drew learned of the teen's suicide, the indictment alleges, she directed one of the teens involved to "keep her mouth shut" and deleted the account.

Meier's mother, Tina Meier, told CNN in November that her daughter had self-esteem issues and had struggled with depression since childhood.
She said when her daughter began receiving messages from "Josh" telling her she was pretty, she was thrilled.

When "Josh" broke off the relationship, Tina Meier said, her daughter was devastated.

"She was looking for me to help calm herself down like I always did and be there for her. And I was upset because I didn't like the language she was using, and I was angry she didn't sign off when I told her to," Tina Meier told CNN.

"She said to me, 'You're supposed to be my mom, you're supposed to be on my side,' and then took off running upstairs," Tina Meier said.

Tina Meier found her daughter hanging by a belt shortly afterward.

"It's as if my daughter killed herself with a gun," Meier's father, Ron, told CNN.

"And it's as if they loaded the gun for her."

Drew is scheduled for arraignment in June.

"This adult woman allegedly used the Internet to target a young teenage girl, with horrendous ramifications," U.S. Attorney Thomas P. O'Brien said in a written statement.

"Any adult who uses the Internet or a social gathering Web site to bully or harass another person, particularly a young teenage girl, needs to realize that their actions can have serious consequences," O'Brien said.

In December, Missouri prosecutors declined to file charges against Drew, saying there was no law under which she could be charged.
"There is no way that anybody could know that talking to someone or saying that you're mean to your friends on the Internet would create a substantial risk," St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas said. "Under the law, we just couldn't show that."

Reading the title alone I knew who this story was about:hmm:

I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad she is being brought to justice:yes:

Grown ass woman playing internet pranks:smh:I hope they throw the book at her to teach everybody a lesson:hmm:

I'm glad that she's being brought up on charges, but 20 years is excessive. She didn't cause the girl to commit suicide. That chick had problems. Lots of people go thru WORSE and don't end up killing themselves.

^^^I feel you ... the thing about it is that we all know some people are mentally and emotionally weaker than others ... it's not fair to take advantage of that ... I think for that reason they should throw the book at her:yes::hmm:

:(R.I.P to the girl that took her own life ... I wish she had the strength to see her life meant more than some "internet boy":(

The parents are divorced now.

They were having problems when the child was alive.

Don't blame someone else for your own issues. This is so fucking American.

An believe you me, down the line, we will remember the precedent set here, and it will be a PROBLEM. The government will use this against privacy, and persons will create frivolous claims.

Can you imagine the lawsuits that could fly around BGOL.

1.Good point:(
2.I wanna sue about 39,000 people on here:hmm:

I just watched a law and order on this yesterday except the mom was pretending to be the daughter.

Word:yes:

sure, the kid had problems before, but once again, we're talking about a child that was manipulated by an ADULT. a grown ass woman who probably knew exactly what buttons to push and when to push them. i have no love for this bitch, whatsoever. :hmm:

It's not about that. It's about the continuous blaming of external sources for internal problems.

Now look how far it has gone.

The child killed herself because of what was going on at HOME. Not what happened on the NET. Deal with THAT. Don't deal with a surface issue, because you don't want to run down the rabbit hole because your afraid of what you will find.

This was the fault of the parents.

i'll agree that both sides are at fault. the girls problems started somewhere, but from what i've seen, it was widely known that this girl had emotional problems, and that adult preyed on that. sure, the parents need to be held accountable for why their daughter had such low self esteem, and was that vulnerable to internet-hype in the first place, but i have a real problem with that adult who used it for her own sick motives.

Good for that bitch. I saw her on Dr. Phil a few months ago and she takes no responsibility to what she did. I could care less if the girl was already walkin on the ledge, that bitch pushed her so she gets the kill. Hope she rots with her silly ass.

All of you with children, please do not let your kids have their own sign in on the home computer. You sign them in yourself and monitor what they do. And try not to let them have a computer in their room. I have seen too many horror stories--almost as bad as this.

An indictment doesn't mean a conviction, and the maximum penalty threat is always misleading. I'm sure they'll reach a plea agreement of some sort to a lesser charge, which would make more sense.

Exactly... if you know you have a kid that is mentally unbalanced why would you leave them unattended on the computer?! To me the parents are as much to blame as the chick who created the false name. Further more the lady who created the false name didnt know the girl had mental issues. I am not saying what she did was right... but making her spend an excesive amount of time is jail is doing to much.

Hell if thats the case 99% of the members of BGOL need to be arrested for bullying while under false names. If that chick wouldn't have killed herself over this it would of been something else because at the end of the day you had a fucked up, irresponsible set of parents.

Co-sign. The only thing i can see coming out of this is more infringement on private rights. Any emotionally charged issue is going to be used to set a precedent. the womans intent was to collect information from her that she may have known about her daughter.
Take into consideration that the girl that killed herself did not no that the person she was speaking to was not a boy and since this happened within an hour, how do we know that the adult wouldnt have grown a concious within 2 hours and apologized. There was already issues there that took the girl to the decision that she needed to end her on life that quickly. Who is to say that she wouldnt or wasnt in the process of killing herself before she picked up that first email from "Josh".
How different would it have been if the mom had said "fuck that boy, i love you and will always be here for you" instead of "why the fuck were you on the internet anyway, i told yo ass to go to bed"?
