As widely expected, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 moved over 6 million copies in the U.S. last month on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, making the first-person shooter November's best selling video game.

Settling for third, behind the two versions of Modern Warfare 2, was Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which managed 1.39 million copies. Nintendo's latest Mario adventure for the Wii did so with five fewer days on U.S. store shelves.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II came closest to reaching New Super Mario Bros. Wii, with 794,700 units on the 360, 448,400 on the PS3. Combined, Assassin's Creed II came even closer, with 1,243,100 copies sold across both platforms.

The Xbox 360 and Wii tied for the number of top ten games appearing on each platform. The Xbox 360 scored top showings with Left 4 Dead 2 and Dragon Age: Origins, with Wii bestsellers Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort continuing to score big figures.

The full top ten, according to the NPD Group is as follows.

01. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360) - 4,200,000
02. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) - 1,870,000
03. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) - 1,390,000
04. Assassin's Creed II (Xbox 360) - 794,700
05. Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360) - 744,000
06. Wii Sports Resort (Wii) - 720,200
07. Wii Fit Plus (Wii) - 679,000
08. Assassin's Creed II (PS3) - 448,400
09. Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) - 362,100
10. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 315,000

Total software sales were a relatively healthy $1.406B, down just 3.1% from the November prior. Thanks, Modern Warfare 2.

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has achieved the top spot for first-month sales of any game at the title level," says Anita Frazier, NPD analyst. "Halo 3 previously held the spot when it sold 3.3 million units in September '07 in 12 days at retail. MW2 bested Halo 3's daily sales rate by 16% in its 19 days at retail in November.""

"While this year's top-selling item bested last year's by 283%, it couldn't make up for softness elsewhere. The top 50 games this year sold 5% less units than did the top 50 last year."

Modern Warfare 2 Javelin Bug Fixed for all Platforms

Gamers can now kill enemies in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 without fear of triggering a vengeful explosion that kills themselves and nearby teammates. Major Nelson confirmed on his Twitter today that the Xbox 360 patch went gone live this morning. PC and PlayStation 3 gamers had the glitch fixed earlier in the week, but due to Microsoft's approval process, the Xbox 360 patch took a little longer to go live.

The huge success of Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 was largely due to Xbox Live. Many users prefer to play it on Xbox Live than on PlayStation Network, at least, according to Microsoft's David Dennis.

"Having an install base around 8 million more than the PS3 certainly helps, but the main factor is Xbox Live," said Dennis of the Xbox 360 SKU outselling the PS3 version by more than 2-to-1. "If you're considering a multiplatform game like that and you're going to want to play online, you're going to want to go to where your friends are and, let's face it, most people are playing on Xbox Live."

Even though Xbox Live is subscription-based, costing games about $50 a year, Dennis believes more gamers prefer the network. The subscription fee allows Microsoft to create a better, more robust service with more features.

"Consumers have shown that if you can deliver value, they're willing to pay for a subscription service, beyond just what multiplayer brings with an Xbox Live Gold subscription," continued Dennis. "With things like Facebook, Netflix, Twitter and Last.fm, we continue to drive more value into what a Gold subscription brings to the table. For a lot of people, paying [USD 50] a year for multiplayer is fine, but for a lot of people they want more, so we'll continue to add more to that. But for the cost of a latte, with the depth and richness of what Live brings, I think people absolutely see value in what Xbox Live delivers."

With 2009 quickly coming to a close, and NPD recently having released the November sales data, we're getting a pretty good picture of which titles came out on top for the year in the U.S. Today, IndustryGamers received an updated NPD top 10 list for the best selling games year-to-date through the month of November.

Unsurprisingly, Modern Warfare 2 was #1, but it was Nintendo overall that was the biggest winner. Sure, the Wii definitely experienced a slowdown in 2009, but through November six of the top 10 selling games were for Nintendo platforms (five on Wii). Some quick math shows that Nintendo sold 13.5 million units in the top 10, representing more than 58% of games sold on the list.

Here's the top 10 list (ranked by units, at the individual SKU level, and with collectors/bundles rolled up):
  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Xbox 360 - Activision Blizzard - 4.2 million
  2. Wii Fit (w/ balance board) - Wii - - 3.5 million
  3. Wii Sports Resort (w/ MotionPlus) - Wii - Nintendo - 2.4 million
  4. Wii Mario Kart (w/ wheel) - Wii - Nintendo - 2.2 million
  5. Wii Play (w/ remote) - Wii - Nintendo - 2.1 million
  6. Halo 3: ODST - Xbox 360 - Microsoft - 2 million
  7. Pokemon Platinum Version - DS - Nintendo - 1.9 million
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - PS3 - Activision Blizzard - 1.9 million
  9. Madden NFL 10 - Xbox 360 - Electronic Arts - 1.5 million
  10. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Wii - Nintendo - 1.4
On a side note, according to the Twitter page of NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier, the top five franchises so far in 2009, in terms of dollar sales, are: Call of Duty, Wii Fit, Mario Bros., Guitar Hero, and Rock Band.

This dude Michael Pachter, His numbers are always off:smh: Elpresador gonna get his ass.

In an exclusive interview with Critical Gamer, infamous industry analyst Michael Pachter discusses the disappointing sales of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

“Sales of Uncharted 2 fell precipitously in November, and other than pressure from Call of Duty, it’s really hard to fathom why.” He continues “I’m sure that the game will get a boost from winning the VGA’s Game of the Year, but it’s only sold 650,000 in the U.S. so far, which is really shocking given its review scores.” He concludes “I expect God of War 3 to perform better, but am troubled by the relatively lacklustre sales of Uncharted 2.”

Back in November Playstation VP Phil Rosenburg announced sales of over a million for the game worldwide, as reported by Kotaku. Although a fairly impressive figure for a PS3 exclusive, it still pales in comparison to the 2.6 million units sold of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. However it’s still relatively early in terms of the game’s shelf-life, so we’ll have to wait and see how the game performs in the long run.
