Is America's Misplaced Anger ?</font size>

The American people are mad as hell, and they aren't going to take it anymore. They're tired of billion-dollar bailouts that have bankrupted the country. They are tired of Democratic politicians who are raising their taxes. They are tired of a Congress that has basically done nothing over the past two years.

Come Tuesday, these angry voters are going to shake up Washington, by voting for a Republican Party committed to reversing the failed policies of the Democratic Party. Sounds like a pretty good list of complaints, right?

There's one problem. It's simply wrong.

  • In reality, bank bailouts have actually turned a healthy multibillion-dollar profit. The economy has expanded over the past five quarters. And since Democrats took control of both Congress and the White House in January 2009, 95 percent of Americans have seen their tax burdens go down.

    • Yet according to a recent Bloomberg poll, Americans (by a 2-to-1 margin) believe the exact opposite.

  • What about Congress? Here again, Americans have very little sense of what their representatives have actually done. Over the past two years a Democratic-controlled Congress passed comprehensive health care reform, reformed the student loan program, overhauled the financial system and passed a nearly $800 billion stimulus measure. In short, the 111th Congress has been among the most productive in recent American history.

    • Yet 72 percent of Americans believe that Congress has either accomplished the same as previous Congresses or less than usual. Even among self-identified Democrats, only four in 10 think that this Congress has gotten more done than previous ones.

It's a shocking commentary on the state of American democracy when so many Americans are singularly uninformed about the workings of their own government.

Of course, it's one thing that Americans don't have a clear sense about what is happening in Washington, but it's quite another when it leads to voting decisions that don't even reflect their interests.

Anger & Reality Gap

Here is where the gap between anger and reality is perhaps most pernicious -- and even counterproductive. The policies enacted by Democrats have -- whether one agrees with them or not:

  • created nearly 3 million jobs;

  • expanded guaranteed health coverage to 30 million Americans;

  • prevented a full-fledged economic depression from taking root; and

  • the controversial decision to provide bailouts to American automakers undoubtedly saved millions of jobs and prevented the Midwest from being plunged into a full-scale economic meltdown.

Of course, the obvious rejoinder to this list of accomplishments is that the country is still mired in a jobless recovery with nearly 10 percent unemployment. As the argument goes, the measures that Congress has enacted are having little actual impact on the lives of ordinary Americans. And the blame for this is falling mainly on the incumbent party, the Democrats.

But even if one is congenitally opposed to deficit spending, it's hard to quibble with the notion that the Democrats' efforts to pass a stimulus bill last January were geared toward creating jobs and spurring economic growth. One may feel that only the free market can provide for Americans' health care needs, but there is little doubt that the comprehensive health care reform bill passed last March was focused on expanding health insurance coverage for millions of Americans.

In short, the policy agenda -- whether one opposes it or not -- has been tailored to relieving the economic burden on the American people.

On the other hand

It's pretty difficult to make the same argument about Republicans, who have uniformly opposed any Democratic effort to help those in economic need. Bills to extend unemployment benefits and increase payments to states in order to protect jobs and critical social services or focus on job-creating infrastructure projects -- all of which are supported by a majority of senators -- have been repeatedly and flagrantly filibustered by Senate Republicans.

  • Serious GOP alternatives on health care or growing the economy are nearly impossible to identify;

  • the policy prescriptions of the GOP, like cutting spending or cutting taxes, would harm the economic recovery and further blow up the federal budget deficit -- which has been the nominal excuse for why Republicans are opposed to any other form of government intervention in the U.S. economy; and

  • the centerpiece of the Republican agenda (extending the Bush tax cuts) is opposed by a majority of Americans.

Indeed, recent comments by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell suggest that growing the economy is of minimal interest to Republicans. "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Barack Obama to be a one-term president," McConnell has said.

Yet come Tuesday evening, it is very likely that this is the party to which the American people will turn to lead them out of their current economic malaise.

Now is that something worth getting angry about ?

In the spirit of bipartisanship, I humbly offer this learning tool*to help folks decide whether or not they really do want to vote Democrat in the 2010 midterms.

If you want the American government to be feared by the American people -- but laughed at by Hugo Chávez and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- vote Democrat.
If you want to agree with John Kerry that American voters are stupid and distracted and uninformed -- vote Democrat.
If you moved your 7-million-dollar yacht to Rhode Island to avoid taxes -- vote Democrat.
If you want a "dude" president -- and not the shining city on a hill -- vote Democrat.
If you want to pay through the nose in taxes until you are 70 so union thugs in purple shirts can retire in security at age 50 -- vote Democrat.
If you like the fact that people who actually know the Constitution get laughed at by people who are ignorant of it -- vote Democrat.
If you want the entire country to be like Detroit, Philadelphia, New York, New Orleans, Chicago -- vote Democrat.
If you fear the Chamber of Commerce more than you do the Ground Zero Mosque -- vote Democrat.
If you think liberalism and socialism have done a good job of managing the incredibly beautiful and rich state of California, vote Democrat.
If you want a government bureaucrat, who can no doubt access your voter registration records, to determine whether or not you get a hip replacement or a cancer treatment -- vote Democrat.
If you want to pay six dollars a gallon for gas -- vote Democrat.
If you want electricity bills to "necessarily skyrocket" -- vote Democrat.
If you think America deserved what it got on 9-11 -- and that we can handle another such attack -- vote Democrat.
If you think that Club Gitmo, which was not even operational on 9-11, is why "they hate us" -- vote Democrat.
If you think our economy will boom with government bureaucrats making twice what similar folks make in the private sector -- vote Democrat.
If you think there's nothing wrong with Jerry Brown admitting that the last time he ran for governor of California, he "had no plan" -- vote Democrat.
If you think anything has changed about Jerry Brown and his plans -- vote Democrat.
If you liked Richard Blumenthal's answer in the Connecticut debate on "how to create a job" -- vote Democrat.
Actually, if you can even decipher Blumenthal's answer about creating a job -- vote Democrat.
If you think Michelle Obama actually added value to the health care system with her no-show three-hundred-thousand-dollar job in Chicago -- vote Democrat.
If you think John Edwards is sexy -- regardless of your gender -- vote Democrat.
If you think civil rights means that all white Americans are by definition guilty and all African-Americans are by definition innocent, vote Democrat.
If you are stupid enough to think that being against a Federal Department of Education is the same as being against education -- vote Democrat.
If you want to vote the same way the dead are voting -- vote Democrat.
If you want to vote the same way the felons are voting -- vote Democrat.
If you like the fact that our military men and women are being disenfranchised -- vote Democrat.
If you think Cuba is a success story -- vote Democrat.
If you think that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac crashing the housing market is an example of "unfettered capitalism" and a failure of the free market, then vote Democrat.
If you think that smart businesspeople will sit around and let our government tax them out of existence before they move their operations overseas -- vote Democrat.
If you think it helps you if your boss gets hit with a huge tax bill -- vote Democrat.
If Chris Matthews gives you a tingle up your leg -- instead of an upset stomach - then vote Democrat.
If you think insurance companies can lower rates, pay for every small medical item -- and every preexisting condition -- and every illegal alien -- and stay in business -- vote Democrat.
If you agree with the French union protesters upset about having to delay retirement for two years to age 62 -- vote Democrat.
If you think a rally sponsored by Arianna Huffington, the SEIU, and the DNC is a non-political rally -- vote Democrat.
If you think electric cars are the answer because they don't use energy -- vote Democrat.
If you don't want Nancy Pelosi to retire -- vote Democrat.
I hope this has helped any undecided voters.*

created nearly 3 million jobs;

Where??????? Oh I forgot he saved just as many.

expanded guaranteed health coverage to 30 million Americans;

Never really trusted the Obama phenomenon. Thought it was too much too soon. Obama would have been a great vp but wasn't quite ready for the big office imo. But the anger that's been directed towards him is unfair. Just 2 yrs ago the country was bogged down in 2 wars, had a fucked up economy and everyone knows it was republican policies that got us there. The anger at this admin is not rational or factual that means it can only be one thing driving it and we all know what that is. One can only wonder what will happen when this country has changed to a point where it can not be ignored or blamed on anyone anymore. Then what?

If your wife is cheating and running up your credit for 2 years, you think you guys are headed in the right direction? No, it is not all his fault but his administration is not making it better.

What kills me is black unemployment is at 16% the worst of all races. Now he needs the black vote.

It's not a good comparison a private relationship vs a national one. Obama's been in office 2 yrs that not a lot of time we don't know how his policies will play out but we do know how we got here and who is responsible. Is putting those people back in power a rational thing to do, what happens when they fuck up again and there's no Black president to blame. Then what? The people who re-elected them will have to admit that there is no hope for us we are crazy.

They get 4 years in office if you still can't grade him after 2 years then at what point are you supposed to express your disagreement with his policies. Come on man.

As for voting back in the same people. The same Republicans were not voted back in for the Democrats. These are different Republicans replacing them. How is a message to be sent if those that we disapprove of are not voted out?

I just want to point out that I am totally for a welfare state if I am a beneficiary.

I am still envious of the banks cause the got bailout and I didn't get any.

My friend, Clinton shifted toward the center. From the looks of it Obama will not. Dude at the rate we are going were headed off the cliff, all we have to do is turn around. Look at California, they are in debt and the citizens are fleeing and they elect the same like-minded individuals. They should get everything they deserve. Arnold is a RHINO. Someone needs to say "NO WE CANT AFFORD IT".

Take the blinders off!!!

There are 2 political philosophies in America, Conservative and Liberal. We know what each will do it doesn't matter what individual we elect it's their thinking that matters. Conservatism will lead to low job growth, deficits, war and racial strife. Conservatives only get elected if a majority share their views that says alot about whats important to 1/2 of the voters in this country.
