Mike Tyson wasn’t just high off his celebrated return to the boxing ring at age 54.
The boxing icon said he smoked marijuana prior to his eight-round exhibition bout Saturday against Roy Jones Jr. at Staples Center.
“Absolutely yes… Listen, I can’t stop smoking,” the former heavyweight champion of the world told reporters after his first fight in 15 years. “I smoked during fights. I just have to smoke, I’m sorry. I’m a smoker. … I smoke everyday. I never stopped smoking.”
The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association tested Tyson and Jones Jr. for performance-enhancing drugs prior to the bout, which ended in an unofficial draw, but weed was not on the list of banned substances.

“It’s just who I am,’’ Tyson said. “It has no effect on me from a negative standpoint. It’s just what I do and how I am and how I’m going to die. There’s no explanation. There’s no beginning, there’s no end.”

Tyson owns a 40-acre ranch in California after breaking into the weed industry in 2018. He has long been a public advocate for the drug and even has his own school – Tyson Cultivation School – to teach farmers how to grow and develop strains of cannabis.
