Mike Carey to referee Super Bowl, first black to do it

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Mike Carey will become the first black referee in Super Bowl history.

Carey, in his 18th year as an official, was notified by the NFL office this week he had the assignment for the Feb. 3 game in Glendale, Ariz. The NFL will not officially announce the assignments until the week of the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl officials are chosen on merit, with the highest ranked at each position getting the assignment. Carey, who runs a skiing accessories company, has been among the NFL's top crew chiefs for a decade and has been a Super Bowl alternate, but has never been the referee.

Black officials have been increasing in number over the years. This season there were 26 on the 17 crews, a single-season high.

Yeah he's an excellent ref, but don't stand too close, cause he'll knock your ass out with one of those over-exaggerated hand signals... Props to him though, good ref...

I don't know how good of ref he is (although he must've scored well, 'cause the NFL takes that into account when choosing Super Bowl refs), but what I do know is that he does a hell of a job helping fans understand a call. After replay challenges he explains the situation very well. And if they pick up a flag, he'll explain that as well.

I don't know any refs by face or name but before I opened this thread I knew it was going to be this dude. Now that I know his name, Mike Carey has consistently been one of the best refs in the game for a while now. I'm glad he got chosen. Props to Mr Carey for all his hard work over the years. I'm glad it payed off for him.

I had to shake my head at myself because I could name a half dozen or better NFL refs with ease. Nobody should be that deep in the game.

Sucks how we always gotta acknowledge the first black this, the first black that. I would've been fine with knowing Mike Carey was reffing the big game.
