Microsoft is the plague: Nokia stock drops 14% as 1,000 employees walk out

First Tunisia. Then Egypt. Now Nokia. The twittersphere is again afire with buzz about massive protests. They're not political this time, but the outcome could be just the same. Can Nokia CEO Stephen Elop survive the revolution?

Nokia employees aren't responding well to today's sweeping deal with Microsoft. They're mad, as they should be. A few hours ago I called the agreement, which swaps Symbian for Windows Phone as Nokia's primary mobile platform, a "silent takeover...If I were a Nokia employee or investor, I'd stage a revolt." Apparently employees and shareholders are doing just that.

Investors punished Nokia shares with a 14-percent decline. Meanwhile, about 1,000 employees walked off the job, using flexible work-hour plans to do so, apparently protesting Nokia's deal with Microsoft. There is plenty of Twitter buzz, unfortunately too much of it in Finnish (Hey, my second language was Latin, and I'm rusty at that). But the reaction I can read is absolutely chilling.

Nebil: "#Nokia RIP. #Microsoft will leach you out of your existence. Nokia bends to pick up the soap."

Turcu Ciprian: "I think #nokia did a big mistake. No offense #microsoft but Android would of been a better way to go if they wanted a slice of the cheese."

Rajinder Yadav: "#Nokia just added fuel to their man on a burning raft. They just killed the QT developer ecosystem today for MS and .NET"

Justine Devine: "I should start writing a case study now about how #Nokia put themselves out of business."

Tom Reestman: "I wonder if Elop thinks his 'relationship' w/ #Microsoft will keep him from getting screwed by them down the road?"

Dale Wilson: "Did #Microsoft send #Elop to #Nokia to stage a coup? Hmmm ... What do you think?"

Nick Robinson: "Has any other company ever scrapped the OS with the largest market share in favour of one with the smallest?"

Steven Frank:
"A 20 year regime comes to an end after populist revolt."

Helge Reikeras:
"#Nokia you are officially dead to me now."

Purnateja: "Why Did Stephen Elop decide to Elope with Microsoft?"

The questions now to ask:

* Has Elop gone too far to survive the wrath of Nokia employees, investors, customers, developers and partners?

* Does he still own Microsoft stock (I haven't had time to yet check), which could raise reasonable questions about conflict of interest?

* Was this all along a plan between Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to gut Nokia's platform in exchange for Windows Phone?

Remember, Elop only went to Nokia in September, surprisingly giving up his cozy position as president of Microsoft's Business division. He's not only new chief executive but a foreigner -- a Canadian, giving an American company huge influence of one of Europe's oldest industrialists. These are all marks against Elop when tallying up the benefits (none that I see) from today's Microsoft deal.

Elop may have thought he was starting a revolution, by making so much dramatic change to Nokia. In the end, he may be the victim of a counter-revolution staged by Nokia employees, investors and loyalists. At the least there should be some official investigation into the ties that bind Nokia and Microsoft: A major Microsoft executive becoming Nokia CEO and then cutting a deal six months later that is hugely beneficial to his old company. Something stinks in Finland and also Washington state.

It was to be expected, no biggie. Plus, have of those employees worked on the Symbian side & few on the Meego side. Like most of the tech sites said, it was only because of the flexible work schedule, that they were able to do this. They will be walking the same route anyway due to the layoffs, since Symbian is pretty much dead at this point.

question, can the board boot him and block the deal ?
It's the board that put him there and was probably working on the deal before he was put in place. Stuff like this doesn't take place overnite, these 2 companies was in dealings long before and agreed to have Elop listed as the bad guy, or headhunter to streamline the company.
I'm a Nokia user, but I have to agree with the board & Elop, in Symbian, needed a huge overall, but they dragged their feet for so long, cause they were so big and commanded such a huge lead over everyone else on a world scale. Nokia, also should've tried to really break in the US market, before Apple & Google made their move. Symbian is a very powerful OS and does just about everything out of the box, without downloading a single app. It's biggest problem is getting around the OS in general, too many steps to do one task. What iOS & Android, are just bringing to the table for the last 2 years, Nokia(Symbian), has been doing it for just about a decade. Wouldn't know it in the US though and because of UI.

LOL This man is a fool for this one

i always heard great things about nokia phones and symbian. . .but withouot any major carriers in the us i never SAW or got my hands on 1. damn shame tho considering how big they were and how far they are now going to fall

been using nokia phones since forever. They should have partnered with Android if they were going to scrap MeeGo.

Fuck this windows shit!!!!!

nokia phones have some of the top hardware all the time (which is the main reason I stick with them especially the cameras).

this looks like a planned take over this stinks!!!

Where is Brown Turd?

Nokia had to do what is best for them. This is why employees just work and business men make the decisions. I know they are upset because the Symbian OS is dead and they will loose their jobs. Either Elop will be a genius or he will flop

I was a nokia man for 10 years. I was buying phones from overseas aon putting them on the tmobile network. I LOVED them. They were sturdy and you could not touch those Carl Zeiss lenses. Plus their designs were off the chains crazy way back. they messed up big time with windows. I would have gotten a nokia phone with android.

Going Android just makes them another phone within many. The WP7 platform gives them a unique experience. As long as they continue to grow their third party Apps I don't really see what the fuss is all about.

Good move on Nokia's part they need to focus on hardware not software. Nokia had one foot in the grave and one hand on the oxygen mask.

Symbian was/is not dead, they are just taking way too long to get to what Symbian^4 was supposed to be when they demoed it about 2 years ago.

And even then, it was to be moved to a second-tier OS for Nokia once Meego was done.

I read a blog from a Meego developer at Nokia and he basically said that Meego is already done (it should be since they've been working on it for a year or so). The problem is that they're waiting until Q4 to release a Meego handset.

I could see taking on WP7 if it was to supplement the OSes that Nokia already has, but if they are going to commit seppuku for WP7, they will fall.

The only problem Nokia had, as far as I've been concerned, is not allocating their resources properly and moving to the market faster with their new developments.
