Microsoft Is Cut Again! Downgraded By FBR

Wall Street continues to run away from Microsoft.

Today, it's David Hilal at FBR that's cutting Microsoft, downgrading the company, Marketwatch Reports.

He cites the common concerns of slowing PC-growth, and exploding growth of the iPad, and tablets. Hilal has the stock at a "market perform" rating, which seems to mean it's just going to be flat for a while.

FBR is joining Goldman, Janney Capital, and Barclays, who have all cut Microsoft's rating this month. All for the same basic reasons.

Microsoft's stock has been flat to down for the last ten years, nice of the Street's analysts to finally speak up.

Microsoft bulls still have a case to make. The PC business isn't going anywhere soon. Xbox Kinect could be a killer. And Windows Phone 7 could become a big business. (Ballmer thinks it generates $1 billion, eventually.)

That said, it doesn't matter what happens with Microsoft's business. It has grown a number of businesses over the last 10 years and investors could care less.

Microsoft comes out with earnings on Thursday. We'll see how the bears feel Friday morning.

Update: As soon as we published this post, MarketWatch sent out an alert saying Pacific Crest cut Microsoft to market perform. Make it 5 cuts in one month.

Microsofts size has made it that the growth cannot be compared to Apple and Google. I think that they have also have had some flops....vista...windows phone platform...but the biggest thing is that they do not have the cool factor with the personal PC market anymore.

FYI - writing credit spreads on this stock has been a great thing.

You have stock in Sony? You short selling Microsoft stock? If not you're obsessed loser that needs to get a life.

oh how cute.. your defending microsoft again...

you fail to realize my favoritism toward apple and sony has nothing to do with microsoft. i hate microsoft cause they are a shit company. that's why i said in the slate thread that the cisco tablet running android is of interest cause i know cisco is a brand name i can rely on and android is a software that received positive feedback, microsoft not so much.

but hey, you keep defending ballmer and microsoft.

Dude, it's just software man.

Why is it so important to see a company fail because they have a shitty product? I think McDonald's burgers are shitty, but I'm not sitting around posting anti-McDonald's topics all day.

I simply don't eat their food anymore.

for the same reason apple haters come apple threads..

this is bgol, this is what we do...

Microsoft control the CPU world. Until another OS comes out then they will always be around and dominate

for the same reason apple haters come apple threads..

You know Apple haters are Apple haters because they're constantly being told how inferior Microsoft is to Apple, right?

At some point during constant bragging, people just want you to STFU. I have two friends who are Apple-heads, and they are very obnoxious about it. I'm not into computer related stuff that deep, so it kind of boggles my mind that they are so passionate about that shit.

I can't understand being so vocal about the fact that you use a product that is superior to others.

they do that to validate the price that they paid.

Deep down...they probably regret wasting money when a PC is cheaper and just as adequate.

I had a mac once

:dunno:

sold it for $1100

I became a fan of Apple myself once they came with OSX (bystander up until 2006, when I actually made the switch). But I can tell you why you get those obnoxious fanatics you described above...

Keep in mind, prior to Steve Jobs returning, OSX, and the iPod, Microsoft fans used to get into that ass. You even mentioned owning an Apple product, you would get bombarded with countless explanations on why Apple sucks, and why you suck for owning something from them. An Apple's user's only defense was Microsoft copied Apple... and that would lead to a 2nd round of getting into that ass.

I remember this, cause I was one of this Windows users who hated Mac OS (it was blatantly outdated back then, buggy, slow, the UI looked the same way it did back in the 80's... it fucking SUCKED).

What you get now from Apple fans is simply payback, but yet in still, its nowhere to how bad it was for them back then.

Just my two.

Face it. M$ is on the decline and EVERY OTHER OS is on the rise.

what is on the rise? Just because they got downgraded doesn't mean their operating system isn't selling, Windows 7 has been very successful so far. As for apple they are selling ipads and iphones not mac computers, if they weren't so expenisive they would probably sell more

sadly it will take more than that.. deep pockets on microsoft is one reason..

but the main reason is that its just not economical and it imposes time restraints to retrain users.

switching takes time. shame linux os is not user friendly.

most apple haters i know never owned or held a mac.. a lot of techs i know just were told to hate apple. they spew arguments of popularity or ecosystem or but a good majority of apple haters rarely have any solid comparisons to make. (if anyone reading this gets upset cause they feel they know the difference, relax.. i'm speaking generally)

one thing i do know is most mac users are former windows users.. a lot of internns would start and ask if they could have a pc instead of a mac, when i told them no they sighed and continued to work.. they said that their dad/brother/boyfriend told them windows was better so they've used windows all their lives.. after a short time they loved the mac so much their next personal computer was a mac.. rarely do i see the reverse happen.. i definitely understand being turned off by price though.

hell before i became a mac tech i was a pc tech and i used to shrug off the mac users and techs pounding my chest of windows superiority.. but i didnt know any better.. i didnt have much to compare to really make that claim back then.

as for the bragging.. i dont know about that. i do see people say they love their mac and windows users jump down their throat about it though.

what has microsoft done to u?

its just a history of bad product to me.

apple products have worked. period. although when i switched from pc to mac i then lost gaming so i stuck with consoles for gaming and macs for desktops. apple ipod? works itunes? works mac os x (and previously os 9)? works .. all with little to no hassle.

sony products just work. betamax was the crowd favorite even though it lost out. walkmen? worked. dvd players just worked. ps2 had the laser issue in the beginning but they didnt really have much competition sega dropped out and nintendo was making kids games, sony receivers just work, sony tv's work.. the mini disc was actually fucking awesome but mp3 killed that.. the only thing i hate about sony is their lack of software that works properly or unwillingness to reach out to developers and their proprietary formats.

cisco is a brand that works.. we use the brand at work, i've been supporting and using cisco products so much that if they release the cius android tablet to consumers i would consider getting one over an ipad. see i dont want an ipad due to fanboyism as some assume i like reliable products.

when i think sony i think reliable, when i think apple i think reliable, when i think cisco i think reliable, when i think google i think buggy but forward thinking.

when i think microsoft reliable and forward thinking are two words i dont associate with the company.

and honestly imma shut this thread down before it even gets started good.

there is one reason and one reason ONLY that microsoft has the perceived reputation of being unreliable. only ONE reason!

and that one reason also points to m$'s strength as well. anyone well versed in tech enough to know the reason???

i will check back after i do my cardio to see if any of the apple 'geniuses' know the answer.....

Starbucks CIO shows why next version of Windows is “risky business” for Microsoft

OCTOBER 22, 2010 BY ROBERT SCOBLE VIEW COMMENTS
http://scobleizer.com/2010/10/22/starbucks-cio-shows-why-next-version-of-windows-is-risky/

Starbucks CIO, Stephen Gillett, and I had breakfast on Wednesday. He showed me Starbucks new Digital Network, which will pop up on the screen if you sign in on wifi at any of Starbucks US stores. 30 million people a month do that.
You can hear him telling me about that on this CinchCast, I’ll have a video up this weekend.

But what he told me about what Starbucks is learning about its customers was telling and demonstrates just how big a deal the next version of Windows will be to Microsoft. How big a deal? Well, Steve Ballmer is already telling folks it’s the riskiest product intro yet for Microsoft.

So, what did Gillett tell me?

He said that laptop usage is flat, or even slightly declining, and that mobile usage is on fire and growing a great percentage every month.

Take that trend out two more years, which is when we expect to see the next version of Windows, and you can see the “risky” problem for Microsoft: we might not care at all about the OS on laptops and desktop computers anymore and might have switched to smart phones or slates, like the iPad. By the way, Gillett also said that iDevices from Apple are used more in its stores than any others. How important is that? Well, Gillett wanted to use Flash on the social network, but there wasn’t any way he could because of Steve Jobs’ refusal to support Flash. Even today Apple is refusing to include Flash in its laptops and desktops.

So, Starbucks built its system using HTML 5. Note what that means: nothing special for Microsoft Windows. No Silverlight. No .NET code. No Windows Mobile 7 features. Etc.

How the world has changed in just a decade. If we were in 2000, instead of 2010, Gillett wouldn’t have kept his job if he tried betting against Microsoft. But today his customers are forcing him to.

When I visited Microsoft this summer employees there told me they knew this fact too: we are losing interest in the platforms that Microsoft is dominant in and that makes the next version of Windows very risky.

Look at what could happen:

1. Windows 7 is a fantastic OS, so we might just stay with that. If Windows 8 doesn’t have a “killer feature and killer apps” then there won’t be the leverage on us to upgrade. We all upgraded to Windows 7 to get rid of the buggy Vista, or get the new stuff that made XP seem old-in-the-tooth. But will Windows 8 come up with something to make Win 7 seem long in the tooth? That’s a far tougher challenge.

2. We could stop caring about laptops and desktops altogether. I’m noticing more and more iPhones and iPads when I fly. Steve Rubel, VP of Edelman, told me he doesn’t even carry his iPad or laptops on business trips anymore. Just uses his mobile phone.

3. We could get pulled into Apple’s platforms, or Google’s platforms. Look at all the new apps that are only on these platforms. That would mean the death of Windows.

So, what will happen? Well, Microsoft better pull a rabbit out of its hat. The problem is, that hat has been dry for some time.

What would get you to care about Windows again, after all, Starbucks is noticing we like using our mobiles in its stores a lot more and that’s NOT a good place for Microsoft right now.

well since no one seemed to come up with an answer......

the ONLY reason windows is labled unreliable is because windows has to fit thousands of different configurations. how many different hardware vendors make windows devices??? right.

so given all of these different configurations it is a ridiculous task to make all of the 100% bug free. and that is not on microsoft, per se. it is really up to the developers to make sure that they are properly certified and run the os properly. (random security issues notwithstanding)

that is also why you will see a different mobile os for windows phone 7. m$'s specs are stringent if a hardware vendor wants to make a phone for that os. i have set in on a few developer meetings and windows phone 7 does have some catching up to do out of the gate. but by next summer there may yet be another shift in the mobile os market. (and i still don't care for the tiles, but i understand the design choice.)
