Michael Sam showed promise during the preseason, but it wasn't enough to make the defensive heavy St. Louis Rams roster. Is this the gay agenda or one man's agenda to live his dream.

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, was cut by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday.

Sam was one of the Rams’ last cuts before the NFL season begins this week. He’s now a free agent who will pass through waivers, which means that every other NFL team will have a chance to claim Sam and add him to their 53-man roster.

And for Michael Sam’s long-term career — for the NFL’s effort to support diversity — that might end up being a good thing. (More on that in a second.)

Although Sam played well in the preseason, analysts suggested that the Rams’ decision to cut Sam was grounded in football strategy, and not related to Sam’s sexuality or the media circus around the player.

Sam also was not seen as a blue chip player for the Rams; he was the 249th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft — the seventh-to-last player selected. (But if other teams don’t pick Sam off the waiver wire, the Rams reportedly are interested in adding Sam to their practice squad.)

“The most interesting legal aspect of Michael Sam’s release from [the] Rams is that there is no legal aspect,” lawyer and Sports Illustrated columnist Michael McCann tweeted. “It was an ordinary football decision.”
