The southern state was founded after the inspirational defeat suffered by Crockett and his troops at the Alamo. But the latest count of the state's 22.5 million people showed that 11.3 million, or 50.2 per cent, are non-white.

Most of the "minority" population is Hispanic, although there are also about three million blacks. But as the state mulled the news that whites were in the minority for the first time since the early 19th century, Texas newspapers spurned any discussion of the historical irony, preferring to focus on implications for the educational system.

White settlers seized Texas from the Mexicans in a series of engagements from 1836-48. These began with the defeat of a settler force at a mission station called the Alamo in 1836.

Demographers predict that whites will be outnumbered by all other races in the United States by 2050.

CHICAGO (AFP) - Whites are now a minority group in the state of Texas, the US Census Bureau said.

A July 2004 population estimate placed the number of non-Hispanic whites in the nation's second-most-populous state at 11.2 million, or 49.7 percent of the population.

Texas joins Hawaii, New Mexico, California and the District of Columbia as a "majority-minority" state, the Census Bureau said.

Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi and New York have white populations of about 60 percent, and the Census Bureau said they are in line for majority-minority status.

Nationwide, non-Hispanic whites comprise 67 percent of the US population.

Hispanics have overtaken blacks as the largest minority group, with a population of 41.3 million, or 14 percent of the US population. California had the largest Hispanic population at 12.4 million people, while New Mexico had the highest concentration of Hispanics at 43 percent.

Blacks comprise 13 percent of the US population at 39.2 million people. New York State has the largest black population with 3.5 million while the capital, Washington DC, has the highest proportion of blacks at 59 percent.

There are 13.9 million Asians in the United States, representing 4.7 percent of the population. California, the nation's most-populous state, has the largest Asian population at 4.8 million. Hawaii was the state with the highest concentration of Asians at 58 percent.

I am not worried about Mexicans "rising" in Texas or any other state.

The heart of the matter is ILLEGALs snapping up every bit of available free aid or resources that they are not entitled to...WHY???

ILLEGALs are not citizens of the UNITED STATES of America, and any law that you think will pass legalizing them, is not going to happen.

You need to do some research. There was no widespread deportation of indians from Texas at any time during American history. The people the US kicked out were Spanish generals who were the vestiges of colonial Mexico. This is not "reconquista", it's "conquista". And the majority of Mexicans who come in would have been slain by the Indians that live in what is now Texas. But, in this argument, as many currently discussed, there is no logic or reason, only emotion.
