The 2024 Hot 97 Summer Jam lineup included several explosive names like, Doja Cat and Friends, Sexyy Red, French Montana, Favido, Lola Brooke, Cash Cobain, Bay Swag, Honey Bxby, Fivio Foreign, 41 [Kyle Richh, Jenn Carter, Tata], Sleepy Hallow, Connie Diiamond, 310BABII and Ty Dolla $ign and friends.

Summer Jam used to be at Giants Stadium and was PACKED, 80K+. Now it’s in an arena with maybe what, 10k in attendance? Says a lot. That lineup was trash. Some folks on that bill were relevant…..for what, six months? A year? In 2022?

Meth ain’t wrong, but look at that lineup they were on with, no one was there to see him and Red. Sad as it might be, for that crowd, their music is their parents (or quietly, their GRANDPARENTS) generation. Beats, content, stage cadence, 25 and under crowd could give a fuck less about it. They ain’t into “hip hop” per se, “hip hop” is a beat talking about whatever, as long as the hook is catchy, it’s what they like.

Lot of money to be made on the mid-age circuit. Shit, I’ve seen Wu-Tang and Nas at an NBA arena and saw Nas before that at a casino, both times, packed houses with folks spending good money on tickets and merchandise.

That whole line up is TRASH..lol

What they should have done was made the show a solid mix of "old" & new, which would have brought out a much larger crowd. Like someone said earlier that shit used to pull much larger crowds.

Understandable. No need to be in spaces where the crowd is 30 years younger than him.

^^^^

No need to trash this new genertion taste in music

because our elders did the EXACT SAME THING to our taste in music.

but I would have hoped Wu Tang could be a potential bridge cause in MY opinion its timeless and is the foundation for all the modern music we hear now in one way or another.

No, you have to trash the new generation music taste because it’s trash. Even my mom back in the 90s used to love 90s hip-hop because it was coherent. The new shit that is out right now is mostly crap and incoherent.

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to be any near Sexy Redd fans, even if it was a solid mixture.

Bro... they called our music WORSE and drove over rap CDS with construction equipment.

I'm not even saying I LIKE most of the new music

but its NOT for YOU to like

its for THEM to like

They not like Us

and they are NOT supposed to be.

sidebar... Look at the ages of these MAGA supporters? And do the math of the music THEY were listening to growing up?

So OUR music was as influential as we thought huh? O was it?

You have to put yourself in the mindset of this younger generation. We talking about kids born in ‘04, ‘05, and ‘06. How could they possible have any understanding what Wu-Tang is? They don’t even know of old school Kung fu flicks.

The reality of the state of hip-hop is in front of us.

Its also partly his issue with stage presence. At 45+ still just walking back and forth on the stage, in a large facility is boring. His agent should never have put him with that bullshit artist lineup off jump.

I think Hip Hop feels better, sounds better in 2,500 person halls anyway.

I travel the country watching shows and sound men still don't know how to handle the integration of the digital DJ :thumbsdown:clear hip hop vocals and controlled deep and wide bass delivery in large venues.

True. But okay lets do the doomsday approach

So WHOSE fault is all this exactly?

As we are supposed to be protectors, fans, stewards of this music - wait hold on..

Its NOT just music right?

Its CULTURE

SO what responsibility do WE take in where the modern hip hop culture and music is right now?

No point in history has Black American culture remained the same. It usually evolves every 10 years.

Our culture is a byproduct of our state in society. Always been that way. Just think about the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and now 2020s. None of those decades are the same musically and culturally. So what exactly would we be trying to protect? Is this more about preserving what gave us good memories?

You know how we are as Black folks. We do the same thing EVERY generation and we have this same conversation each decade. We have a strong “fuck them old heads” culture.

Damn lol. I am not an entertainer, but how is a brother suppose to get hype with that wack ass crowd regardless of the age difference?

Reminds me of that vid I saw where people were at the club just chillin not even dancing. :smh:

That happened with gangster rap in particular

Could probably do it like wrestlemania. Pack in the old heads on Friday night and then new heads on saturday night. Then actually do a discount for going to both nights.

We, not it's you folks who have kids that didn't teach them anything about music..lol And also didn't teach them anything common sense wise.

Corporate America has hijacked rap & a good space of current r&b also, once they figured out that they could use it to dumb down our community even more they've gone full speed ahead.

EVERYTHING you just said...plus how old is that song he's playing? That song is older than BOTH my kids put together!!!! But even if he and Redman came out with something new. THAT crowd wouldn't know it!

I remember Meth and Red came to Grand Rapids, MI and Meth told us: 'If security pushes you, push them back!" Thus, resulting in us storming the stage while they performed. In Pontiac Michigan and Method Man WALKED on us! We held him up with our hands as he walked out ON the crowd. He's not going to get that with THIS crowd and there is nothing wrong with that, but good for him that he can still perform at this level.

Man I was sitting here thinking to myself, am I tripin with this new gen? I mean, I use to jam this

Then I think, naw, that shit was jammin. Those females that named themselves after an STD :puke: I guess I miss the old school ways of seducing a woman.

I do miss the time when we had music that taught me something,

It would have taken me decades to know that Elvis and John Wayne were POS to the black man.

This is were the real money is at. Young people don't spend money on entertainment like we used too.

E-40/Too short/DJ Quick tickets had to be at least $300 per. Old niggas gladly paid, had a good time, and took our old asses home with no issues.

Why even bother with the young crowd when their artist will never get to that level.

Imagine 60 year old ladies in the crowd breaking their hips trying to twerk. It going to be sad as fuck watching them trying to replicate youth.

Imagine going to see 60 year old Sexy Ready or Cardi B. It gonna be real sad.

But it's also going to be funny as hell too. Snapp!! You ol maid hussie. Your BBL and twerk broke you and now you need a hip replacement. Great!!!

Gawd damn great grandpa

I give a listen to some new artists and will give props when I hear good things. I remember at one point I was like these new youngins had nothing for me. Then I gave a listen to YBN Cordae, Earl Sweatshirt and few others and was like aight it ain't so bad. Hot 97 should have read the room better when they selected Red and Meth though. I mean cmon.
I will however agree with you...it's not for us.
