The man/dad in the relationship being a bit of a buffoon is a common TV trope, both in commercials and in series.

It's why I Love Lucy was considered so groundbreaking (because Lucy was the buffoon character).

It's part of why Roseanne was considered groundbreaking (Because Dan wasn't a typical goof-off dad character).

It's part of what eventually drove me to hate The Cosby Show (because not only did they make Cliff a right idiot, but Claire - who could do no wrong- would go out of her way to tear him to pieces when it happened. That's how love works, kids).
 
There is a war on ALPHA males in Western culture initiated by the hard core female feminist movement and reinforced by the LGBTQ movement. You have some couples in Hollywood & elsewhere raising their kids non-gender specific. WTF!! IT's total absurdity. Ironically professional feminist career women (school principals , lawyers, M.D.'s, scientists, et al.) all want ALPHA males as their partners. They DON'T want to marry the postal worker or the bus driver.

Theo became one once he became an adult

Martin wasn't one when he first came on the show but he started hanging out with Cliff n them and he started acting like them.

Cliffs friends were buffoons too . How are you gonna have a bunch of middle-aged educated men playing "cricket" in the house.

The only man who didn't act that way was Cliff's dad.

Kenny didn't act silly but they had to make him a chauvinist

Yep, it's been that way for a while. The man is always made to look like a bumbling idiot who can't do anything without the wife.
To be fair, most of these ads are appealing to women because the product being sold is purchased by women most of the time.

On the low though... I don't know one dude of any age, or level of education that's above doing shit we shouldn't in the house... I take off my socks, ball them up and aim them at the front door everyday... Multiple times on the weekend. Every sink in this house has been a basketball hoop at some point or another and Ive raced my dog up the stairs too many times to count. It's just what we do. I don't think it makes us bafoons, we just like to compete... At anything... Even made up shit, that no one else knows is a thing... To be honest, I actually think it's less manly to try and be what society(women) says you should be. So yeah, cricket may be over the top... But so the fuck what, it's his house too...

The minute Oprah and a bunch of 'em cosigned the Black woman - White man thing about 10 years back, that shit was suddenly everywhere...like they were waiting to do it and were just waiting on a green light..much more so than the more common reverse situation

It’s not just commercials, it’s pop culture in general. My daughter is 8 and I first noticed it in modern children’s books that I would read to her and then it became blatant as she grew older and would watch nick jr and eventually the Disney channel. I’ve even posted about it here a few times.

Vanessa's sorta kinda husband Dabness (....Dabness...?) was pretty straight the whole run. My favorite thing in the latter part of that show was the time she ran home, and when he finally came and talked to her he told her straight up, "Next time you run, I'm not chasing you."

It wasn't just one time they were doing silly stuff every week.

My problem was that the theme of every show was "All Men are fools and All Women are angels who never do anything wrong"

But he was only in 3/4 shows. If the show had've continued and they'd integrated him with the other characters I wonder if they would kept him the same or would have dumbed him down like they did Martin

My guess is that not only is that what would have happened, they removed him from play specifically because they either couldn't figure out how to do it or the actor had issues with it. Probably more the former, as I can't imagine someone with that little play time on a show making a big deal about something like that.

Honestly, they just had too many characters running around by the end of the show, anyway. That last season or so was like an anthology series made of five different sitcoms where the characters just happen to know each other.
