The Message >>>>>>>> anything else by Melle Mel.
Peace BROTHER,
Mel, in my opinion is one of the greatest lyricist of all-time, just my opinion. Mel's lyric on
"THE MESSAGE", "WHITE LINES", "BEAT STREET BREAKDOWN", "SURVIVAL", "WORLD WAR III" and a few others I can't quite remember now are some of the greatest verses of all-time.
How old are you BROTHER? Not trying to be insulting in regards to inquiring about age. Those above mentioned records came out in some instances nearly 30 years ago. I believe for a person to really appreciate the music and grasp the full scope of it, its impact on the people, places and things at that time we need to be there.
Ex:
I love JAZZ and don't fuck with really anything released before the 60's or 70's. I really love the "BE-BOP" and "AVANT-GARDE ERA, but to really fully grasp the music, its impact on people, places and things I would need to be there.
True Story:
I'm at the car wash off King/Western in LA at least 10-15 years ago. I got "THE SERMON" by Jimmy Smith playing as they hook my ride up. Older BROTHER about 70-80 years old comes over and sits by me. He start talking and says he heard the music when I drove up. He stated you don't hear to many younger heads listening to "REAL JAZZ". My man told about how the "THE SERMON" song was considered the "JAZZ NATION'S" national anthem. How he would get up every morning and listen to that.
I asked him how was it to be in the middle of the JAZZ explosion? He went on trying to describe it just the way you hear older kats talk about how HIP-HOP was in the beginning. From the aspect of a culture, a movement, a way of eating sleeping, talking, dressing and just plain living. He even spoke about how the culture was pure and the creativity in the music was on a very high level for the most part.
He even spoke on the bastardization of the music by
"man-kind".How he saw that change the culture, and twisting the music?
We spoke for over 2 Hours. Finally at the end of the conversation he said:
"NO MATTER HOW WELL I EXPLAIN IT TO YOU. YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE. TO FULLY UNDERSTAND HOW WE, BLACK PEOPLE STOOD THE WORLD ON ITS EAR AT THAT MOMENT. AND THE TRUE GENIUS OF THE MUSIC".
I hope this in some way clarifies what MELLE MEL is trying to say.
PEACE
