Once again, Netflix's quarterly earnings report (PDF) shows it's added even more customers (5 million in the US alone), and now boasts more than 115 million subscribers worldwide. The company is now five years into its "original content strategy" that first drew attention with House of Cards, which turned into a string of series including hits like Stranger Things andOrange is the New Black.

Of course, with more competition turning up (Amazon, Hulu, CBS All Access and, eventually, Disney), things are getting more expensive, as the company says it will spend "$7-8 billion on content" next year -- even if it's off the hook for 30 Rock. That's potentially a billion dollars more than what Ted Sarandos predicted in August, and up to two billion more than it spent this year.

Those differences also explain why prices are going up on some of its plans, as it continues a push to become more profitable. The company is predicting it will add slightly fewer new customers next quarter than it did last year, although it's unclear if that's due to the price changes or simply running out of people who want Netflix but don't have it yet. The company will broadcast the video from its quarterly earnings call on YouTube at 6 PM ET, if there are any interesting anecdotes, we'll update this post.

Update: Execs did mention, among other things, that they intend to work with airlines to make streaming on a plane easier -- helpful if you didn't download the latest season of something before taking off on a long trip.

Disney just announced a breakup with Netflix. The company will be launching its own standalone video streaming service sometime in 2019, which will be home to future theater releases including Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 — plus Disney’s vault of animated classic and new original content.

But that’s two years away, and after hearing today’s news, many Netflix customers are probably wondering how much longer they’ll be able to stream Disney content. Fear not: it’s not going away anytime in the near future. Netflix will continue to offer Disney movies from now until the end of 2019. That includes any new releases for the remainder of this year and all of 2018. So yes, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will eventually come to Netflix. But any film premiering in 2019 and beyond will not be available from Netflix.

Below you’ll find a list of what else you’ll be able to watch before these two companies go their separate ways.

How long will Netflix customers be able to stream Disney’s movies?

Netflix says its subscribers will be able to watch Disney movies on the service until the end of 2019.

What upcoming Disney movies can I expect to see on Netflix?

Netflix will be getting pretty much anything from Disney that’s coming to theaters before the calendar moves to 2019. Recent and future releases include:

  • A Wrinkle in Time
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Black Panther
  • Cars 3
  • Coco
  • Mary Poppins Returns
  • Mulan
  • Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Star Wars standalone Han Solo movie (untitled)
  • The Incredibles 2
  • The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
  • Thor: Raganok
Note that if any of these movies are delayed into 2019, they will not be available from Netflix and will fall to the list below.

Movies that won’t be coming to Netflix as a result of this news include:

  • Avengers 4 (untitled)
  • Captain Marvel
  • Dumbo (live action, directed by Tim Burton)
  • Frozen 2
  • Star Wars Episode IX
  • The Lion King (live action, directed by Jon Favreau)
  • Toy Story 4
What about the Marvel shows on Netflix?

A Netflix spokesperson told The Verge by email that “We continue to do business with the Walt Disney Company on many fronts, including our ongoing deal with Marvel TV.” You’ve still got The Defenders to look forward to in August. That’ll be followed by The Punisher, plus at least another season each for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist.

But Disney’s new plan for its own streaming service definitely raises questions about how much Netflix will be willing to invest in future projects.

disney stock gonna shoot through the roof once they get their own channel

that is gonna be the MUST HAVE service

sadly

all these OTHER companies going to try to to follow suit..

when they should NOT

the ONLY thing that could save US the customer?

Disney buying back all the Fox and WB properties

so we can essentially get EVERYTHING on ONE service

and THEN hopefully cable companies will PANIC and lower rates.

I think these companies are delusion and gonna KILL the golden goose before it even lays eggs

cause just having 2-3 streaming services

cost as much as cable

I agree

I mean you already got

Netflix, HULU and Amazon

and if Disney gets there OWN...

then WB/DC gets their own

and CBS got their own with Star Trek

and then so on and so and so...

it CAN and WILL be expensive

(forget all those who KNOW HOW to get these shows by OTHER means)
