There is only one case I know of this happening,in Boston many years ago...
The widow of a black man murdered by police,filed a cilvil suit against the cop...because the city kept dragging it's feet,even after the judgement was awarded.

You can sue anyone for anything in America. Officers in NY get sued all the time its all a matter of of the your department will indemnify you or not. Generally if you really fucked up the city won't cover you.

No they don't. They decide whether or not they will indemnify you based on the circumstances. Police officers are literally always on the job. I'll give you an example a detective who catches a DUI won't be indemnified. A cop that drops a drunk person home then rapes them won't be indemnified. A cop that steals a dead persons credit card won't be indemnified. The city won't cover the tab when they get sued. Believe me there are officers getting money taken out of their check every 2 weeks to pay lawsuits.
