WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez has placed a challenge on the table for WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto. During a recent interview, Cotto said Martinez didn't bring enough money to table, and that's one of the main reasons for the Puerto Rican boxer's decision to move forward with a December 3rd rematch with Antonio Margarito. Martinez, who defends his title against Darren Barker on Saturday night, is willing to stake his purse against Cotto.
"Cotto is always making excuses. I've always said that I want to face him. I'm interested in that fight. Now he says he won't accept [the fight] because I don't bring enough money [to the table]. So I suggest one thing - if the problem is money, I'll challenge him at 154-pounds - and if I win I will give him my money. If he beats me, I will give him my purse. Cotto washed up as a good fighter...he is battle worn now...I don't see him beating Sergio...
Martinez calling out Cotto...there is no star power in his weight class for him to call out...
Dude called out Margarito too... there is nothing at 154-160 to get hyped about and Canelo is way too green to even be mentioned. He should say fuck the Europeans for a while and try Collazo, Clottey, Angulo and Kirkland. Just wipe those dudes out and hopefully something will develop.
I think Angulo & Collazo would be a decent fight for Sergio...Cotto, Clottey Kirkland not so much...I think Speed would be a issue with those 3....
I like Angulo cuz he moves forward with a solid chin heavy hands...I haven't seen Sergio fight someone like that yet....
but like Canelo he has alot to prove...fighting Cotto is only for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ IMO...
In the long run... yes. He wants the fame that will bring in the money and the only way to do that is beat someone on people's radar.
Look at Cotto talking like he's a big star and shit.
Cotto isn't as big a star as he thinks he is but he's a name and he's got a higher profile than Martinez (for some reason) so Sergio should be trying to make this fight.
But fuck the jr middleweights, he should see if he can trick some of those top middleweights into the ring like Felix Sturm and Chavez Jr.
the biggest problem is those cats like Sturm who have belts won't leave their country to fight no reason too
.....JCC is the biggest name in his division & IMO Sergio will run through this cat with ease....he has to go to 154 or 168 to get the big names...until then he is a great fighter not alot of cats know about....lastly he has that Paul Williams effect no one really wants to fight him...
he is in a tough spot at 36....I would pay to see him fight May or Ward sometime down the line....
