Juan Manuel Marquez accepts deal to fight Katsidis

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez has agreed to fight Michael Katsidis at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas on Nov. 27.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said Marquez has accepted the terms of a deal to defend his WBO belt against Katsidis, the all-action Australian slugger.

Schaefer outlined a busy fall for his company’s fighters during a workout in Hollywood on Wednesday by Sugar Shane Mosley, who will meet Sergio Mora at Staples Center on Sept. 18.

Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KOs) generally is considered Mexico’s top boxer. He decisively won a rematch with Juan Diaz on July 31 in his first fight since losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year.

After failing to interest Manny Pacquiao in a third fight, Marquez agreed to a mandatory title defense against Katsidis (27-2, 22 KOs), who has revitalized his career with four straight victories following back-to-back losses to Joel Casamayor and Diaz.

“It’s just a matter of getting it papered up,” Schaefer said, promising another significant fight on the Thanksgiving weekend card. “It’s a great challenge for Juan, and a very interesting fight for fans.”[I got Marquez in 10]

Schaefer confirmed Bernard Hopkins has agreed to fight WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal in Quebec City on Dec. 18. The 45-year-old Hopkins will return to the ring for the first time since beating Roy Jones Jr. last spring to take on Pascal, the Haitian-born Canadian who upset Chad Dawson last month.[I still find it funny Hopkins made this fight so quick and never seemed too interested in fighting Dawson. Oh yeah, it's HBO's fault]

Schaefer also submitted an offer earlier this week to WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan to face Marcos Maidana on Dec. 11.

Khan is a popular British fighter hoping to take over the crowded junior welterweight division, while Maidana is a dangerous Argentine fighter whose recent career has been slowed by management problems. Maidana beat DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley in Buenos Aires last weekend.

If Khan accepts the deal, Schaefer said the fighters would meet Dec. 11 in either Las Vegas or Detroit, which has a sizable Muslim population. Khan made his U.S. debut in May with an 11th-round stoppage of Paulie Malignaggi in New York, but the 2004 Olympic star has been outspoken in his desire to fight in Las Vegas.[Make or break fight for Khan. I'll pick him but wouldn't be shocked at an upset and what the hell is Corley still doing fighting?]

Golden Boy also plans to stage a card in Austin, Texas, on Nov. 6, featuring the comeback of unbeaten 154-pounder James Kirkland, who is expected to be released from prison later this month. Kirkland (25-0, 22 KOs) has served nearly 16 months after pleading guilty to a charge of gun possession by a convicted felon.[I'd be shocked if GB didn't use some of that protective booking to ease James back into the ring. His opponent will be a glorified target practice]

Bay Area lightweight Robert Guerrero (27-1, 18 KOs), who outpointed Casamayor on July 31, is expected to fight on the Austin card, Schaefer said.

I actually see the Marquez-Katsidis fight as a mismatch of sorts. Katsidis has a punchers chance, but ultimately I believe Marquez is to technically sound and Katsidis is too dependent on brawling.

While Hopkins has over the past few years show a lot of bitchassness when it comes to Dawson, at 45, I still give him a little leeway to pick and choose his opponents a little more, because one he's not going around boasting about how great hie is and then deflecting the biggest challenges and two, Dude is 45 years old, so it wouldn't make sense for him to find the biggest level of adversity to attempt to concur. I believe Pascal will be a good fight, and while I like BHop, I think Pascal is a better boxer than he is given credit for, and I think his athleticism and movement will give BHop fits. Sort of like Jermaine Taylor did...

Marquez is in a mismatch but he is fighting someone with a name and trying to build himself back up to get a another big name fighter.

The B-Hop that fought Roy better stay at home. I understand Pascal over Dawson. B-Hop needs guys he can beat with slickest but mainly conditioning and at the pace that Dawson fights, he could go 20 round before getting tired.

I don't like Khan but his size gives him a lot of advantages. Maidana is a limited brawler whose aggression might fuck with Khan but more than likely Khan will hold him off. Did anyone see "Chop Chop" and Maidana? I missed it and some people were saying Maidana got a gift.

Kirkland fucked up his momentum with the dumb shit. Hopefully he is in decent shape.

I don't know what Bhop saw in Pascal that made him want to fight him. I think Pascal is skilled and young enough to not get sucked into Hopkins' hit and grab routine. I agree regarding the Katsidis fight. To me it's a bum fight and I'm barely interested in it. The guy couldn't get by a shot Casamayor, a shop worn Diaz and now he's fighting Marquez.

Katsidis is one of my favorite punchers in Boxing Period...his style of banging and moving forward is exciting.....

Marquez will take this....Katsidis' boxing style plays to the strengths of Marquez....

I expect a battle...both men willing to engage....and both have true heart....but Marquez's counter punching will get the W....
