Tokyo, Japan (CNN) -- The only man recognized as a survivor of both atom bombs dropped in Japan at the end of World War II has died.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi died Monday after a battle with stomach cancer. He was 93.

He had long been a certified "hibakusha," or radiation survivor, of the August 9, 1945, atomic bombing in Nagasaki. In March 2009, the Japanese government confirmed that he had also survived Hiroshima three days earlier.

On that day, the U.S. B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb nicknamed "Little Boy," which exploded over Hiroshima at 8:15 in the morning.

Yamaguchi happened to be in the city on a business trip for his employer, Mitsubishi Shipyard.

Many years later, he recalled the bombing in a story that appeared in the British newspaper The Times.

"It was very clear, a really fine day, nothing unusual about it at all. I was in good spirits," he said. "As I was walking along, I heard the sound of a plane, just one. I looked up into they sky and saw the B-29, and it dropped two parachutes. I was looking up into the sky at them, and suddenly ... it was like a flash of magnesium, a great flash in the sky, and I was blown over."

Badly burned, Yamaguchi returned home to Nagasaki only to experience horror again.

"My double radiation exposure is now an official government record," Yamaguchi told reporters last year after his official recognition. "It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die."

About 140,000 people perished in Hiroshima and an additional 70,000 in Nagasaki. Many of those who survived suffered a lifetime of radiation-related health problems, including cancers. Yamaguchi lost his hearing in his left ear in the blasts, and suffered from acute leukemia, cataracts and other bomb-related illnesses in subsequent years.

Yamaguchi spoke publicly about his experiences and appealed for the abolition of nuclear weapons at venues such as the United Nations.

He was visited in his hospital room in Nagasaki last month by filmmaker James Cameron, who wanted to discuss ideas for a film about nuclear weapons, the Japanese newspaper Mainichi reported.

NPR did a little feature on him. Incredible man. 50cent ain't got nothing on this dude....survived TWO atomic blasts?

Real talk, but what really intrigues me is the fact that very few people atually talk about the fact that 2 atomic bombs were dropped on civilan areas of Japan at the tail end of World War 2 by a supposedly civilized nation.

Billions of innocent people died in those USA initiated atrocities but no one was ever held to account for what could only be descibed as a war crime that defies description or comprehension.

once war is declared all bets are off about the civilians

BILLIONS dawg???

Man, come on...

I get the point you're making, but come on...

Billions? Nope, hundreds of thousands yes....Billions?

Thanks for the additional information but are you also taking into acount all the radiation sickess related deaths that've occured in Japan in the years following the 2 infamous atomic detonations?
Still no where near the "Billions oops Millions" you said. The populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are around 1 Million and 450,000 today respectfully. Are you saying that these two cities had populations which were well into the millions in the years after the bombings?

You over estimated your claim in the amount of deaths due to the bombs. Yeah it was fucked up, by why did you have to exaggerate with the amount of deaths. Yeah, Millions sounds better than hundreds of thousands, but there is no need to exaggerate. Unless you didn't know (nothing wrong with that).

I cannot concede to Majestik's numbers? But he is right in that the number of deaths attributable to the bombings include many, many more than just those who died in the initial blast or even weeks afterwards. Some people took months, years to die from the injuries and radiation effects. Ironically? The guy who is subject of this thread might qualify since he died of cancer. I don't know how that could be ascertained though, seeing as though SO many people NOT exposed to radiation poisoning die of cancer. But still, just to make the point you know?

I don't disagree with high numbers of deaths due to radiation after the fact, I just cannot see (or find information on) the number of deaths exceeding "millions."

Like i said, the populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki today are about 1 Million (Hiroshima) and 450,000 (Nagasaki). I highly doubted that both these cities were near 1 million each in population at the times the bombs dropped, and I was right:

http://www.atomicarchive.com/Docs/MED/med_chp10.shtml
Hiroshima Nagasaki
Pre-raid population 255,000 195,000
Dead 66,000 39,000
Injured 69,000 25,000
Total Casualties 135,000 64,000

So even if half of those who survived were to later die of radiation or cancer related sicknesses, then the number still is no where near "millions." Even if later generations growing up in the areas affected by radiation, the amount of deaths is no where near millions.

The japanese havent even apologized for the atrocities done in china, korea and the south pacific. Look into things they did there, and how the japanese where treated after the war and I think they got better than what they deserved.

Yup!

Ever heard of "The Rape of Nanking".

Japanese doctors (along with their German co-horts) also experimented on live human beings for germ warfare purposes.

While their ferocity and commitment is admired by many during a battle, those same characteristics make you an enemy that will not give up even in under extreme circumstances.

For instance, after 1 bomb is dropped annihilating an entire city they STILL did not give up.

As a loser you CANNOT dictate terms.

the man actually saw the xplosion? always read that anyone who looks into a nuclear xplosion as it goes off would be blinded by the brilliant flash.....unless they're talking about more powerful bombs :dunno:

Dude, seriously thanks for the stats but in the cosmic scheme of things, does it really matter?

Either way you look at it, a shed load of innocent peopledied because their leaders fucked up and took their nation into an unnecessary war.

It's kinda sad that the mistakes of the past are still being repeated today even as we debate online.

Peace.

Ask the Koreans if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Manchurians if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Chinese - both Communist and Nationalist - if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Vietnamese if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Laotians if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Cambodians if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Thais if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Malaysians if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Indonesians if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the New Guineans if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the Pelau if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

Ask the people in the New Hebridies if the USA should have dropped the bomb and killed hundreds of thousands of civillians.

I used to work with a Filippino who said he watch his parents dance in the streets of Manila when word came that the US had dropped an atomic bomb and that hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians had died. He said it HAD to be done.

Of course, this post will get dismissed as propaganda...

If you think dropping a nuclear bomb on a country is cool, you are a moron

I saw a lot of documentaries about the bombs dropping and the war.
Not propganda and watered down bullshit either.

Even with a pro Japanese viewpoint you can see why the US had to do it.

Doesn't excuse the fuckedupness of it but yeah, the Japanese were absolutely ruthless.

Fire with fire I suppose.

Go look at pictures of the equipment Japan had during WWII.

They were very much our equals.

They hit us at Pearl Harbor with about 300 planes from 6 aircraft carriers.

But you could say that we liberated Japan from a military dictatorship...and look what they have done since.

And we killed more people with the low altitude incendiary fire-bombing attacks from B-29's than from the nuke bombings.

you can'tplace the full blame on the leaders, people had a choice, and its a nationwide effort to fight a war on that scale.
