For our latest video, Mass Appeal linked with Main Source to discuss the last 25 years of Breaking Atoms.

After linking with Vinyl Me, Please, Main Source and the vinyl reissued the 25th anniversary "Breaking Atoms" on vinyl. Mass Appeal was on deck to document the concert and spoke with the group before they hit the stage.

“We were before our time,” says Large Professor of his pioneering work with Main Source, the NYC hip hop group that celebrated a the release of their 1991 debut album, Breaking Atoms with a recent concert at perennial downtown Manhattan nightspot S.O.B.’s. Main Source’s debut album is chiefly remembered for its groundbreaking sample-based production, created with the then-state-of-the-art SP-1200 sampling drum machine.

The album also launched the career of upstart rapper Nasty Nas, who cemented his reputation with a legendary verse on the Main Source posse cut “Live at the Barbeque,” establishing his name in the rap game forevermore. “Fuck them fuckin’ papers and statistics and all of that,” says Large Professor. “That street shit is real, man.”

I was just withh my bro Large 2 weeks ago... Wow 25 years...

I still laugh because I introduced Large to K.Kut... In fact...if u look at the 'Just hanging out' video posted, that's me standing with Large and my man Joe Fatal with Cazal and the kangol...

Memories...

Thanks 4 posting this...

Salute...

Never actually owned that album. Crazy

Looking at the front door is timeless !!! Because the content of the song will always be valid.

Shit will still get play on commercial space crafts commuting to human colonies to god knows where 150 years from now.

The BBQ record is from a time when the "Phil Jackson posse" cuts would spark hours long arguments on who ripped the beat the hardest.

No problem. Do they still fuck with Sir Scratch?

Here's some Main Source history...
1. Large is originally from Harlem and his family comes from the same block as Big L anf pplr Camron.

Nah... Dude is M.I.A.

Did he diss them on ATCQ's Midnight Marauders song "Keep It Rollin'"?

I had the cassingle of "Looking at the Front Door" That poor tape didn't have a chance. I wore that mug out! I think that it finally just stopped playing in my car one day. That was my jam!

I remember the day I bought this album the first time..I was in the record store (Funky Fresh Records, Roxbury, MA) I had like 12 dollars on me and wanted a tape. I stood in that store for 15 minutes trying to decide between Breaking Atoms and Digital Underground - Sons of the P (another dope album btw). Big shout out to my man Cinco who insisted that I buy the Main Source joint. I've probably purchased this album at least 3 times

"Peace Is Not the Word to Play" is still my shit to this day!
"Peace! Piece of what? You can't mean p.e.a.c.e,
'Cause I've seen people in the street shoot the next man and turn around and say 'Peace!'
But that's leaving people in pieces,
That's not what the meaning of 'peace' is.
"

Being that I was a Donald Byrd fan, the minute I heard that song, I freaked out!

Yep..."fuck them two DJs/ self mission, I had her in the ill position"

They tried to replace Large Professor. That was foul. I vaguely remember a story in the Source where one of the DJs had family who was their manager and he was taking care of him and not P. I have to look that up to verify it though.

The 2 DJs. are brothers and their moms was the manager. She was very grimey... She even fucked K-Kut over for some money...They tried to replace Large with an MC named Mikey D... Mikey D used to be with LL way back when and Mikey and Large are very cool... Even during that time, the beef was aim at everybody except Mikey. Mikey was down with Large's mentor, Paul C.

Looking At The Front Door is still one of my favorite songs ever. I was only 12 years old when the song came out but I would rap the entire song in my head and still can without the beat playing!

Classic Album

Peace

I remember when they said it was a new Main Source song on VMB and when I saw Mikey I was like, "Who the fuck is THAT?" and turned the TV off. I think the DJs was rhyming in the song.

Replacing Large Professor with Mikey in Main Source was like the Lakers replacing Magic with Sedale Threatt.

Did he leave when he was a kid? Cause I'm from that part of Harlem & I don't remember him at all.

Still, it's dope to know Large Pro is a Harlem native.

Large was born in Harlem Hospital but moved to Flushing as a kid... His older sister stayed up there before she passed away. He still has family up there.
